Cervical cancer remains a major global health burden, necessitating the identification of novel therapeutic targets to overcome the limitations of current treatments. Here, we comprehensively investigated the role of integrator complex subunit 13 (INTS13) in cervical cancer progression. Our analysis of publicly available The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) datasets revealed that INTS13 is significantly overexpressed in cervical cancer tissues across various histological subtypes, correlating with advanced tumor T-stage and predicting poorer overall survival. Single-cell RNA sequencing further local

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to calculate the prevalence of ponticulus posticus (a small bony bridge on the dorsal aspect of the atlas on lateral digital cephalometric radiographs) and classify it into a complete ring or an incomplete ring. The study also investigated its association with the presence or absence of cervicogenic headache in the examined population; a literature review of ponticulus posticus is also presented.
METHODS: The presence and types of ponticuli posticus were investigated on 500 digital lateral cephalograms and the same patients were questioned for a history o

The Condylus tertius is defined as a small bony hunch on the anterior surface of the clivus. Its presence means an enormous functional impairment of the upper head joint, looking at the 3-point-contact between the skull base and the upper cervical vertebrae. In 10 of the 2000 forensic examined bodies, analyses of neck vertebra + skull base revealed this feature. The origin of these findings is discussed, as stated in the literature of embryology, to be a suboccipital hypochordal plate. So in one of the cases the condylus was found at the hypochordal plate itself whereas the so-called socket wa

BACKGROUND: Grisel syndrome describes an infectious soft tissue process that destabilizes the cervical bony elements and ligamentous complexes. This nontraumatic atlantoaxial rotary subluxation occurs in children primarily. This case illustrates a rare case presentation of an adult with Grisel syndrome: infectious destruction of the right atlantoaxial facet joint caused the occiput-C1 vertebra (head) to rotate rightward with lateral horizontal displacement off the C2 vertebra.
OBSERVATIONS: Because the infection destroyed the C1 bony arch and atlantoaxial facet joints with epidural extension,

BACKGROUND: Congenital spondylolytic spondylolisthesis of C2 vertebra resulting from deficient posterior element of the axis is rarely described in the literature.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a unique case of agenesis of posterior elements of C2 with craniovertebral junction anomalies consisting of osseous, vascular, and soft tissue anomalies. A 26-year-old man presented with symptoms of upper cervical myelopathy of 12 months' duration. A computed tomography scan of the cervical spine including the craniovertebral junction revealed spondylolisthesis of C2 over C3, atlantoaxial dislocation,

BACKGROUND: Cervical myelopathy caused by pseudarthroses is rare, with the exact pathophysiology of its occurrence unclear and reports scarce. To the best of our knowledge, only a few cases have been reported so far. We present a case of cervical myelopathy secondary to bilateral pseudoarticulations in rheumatoid arthritis and discuss possible pathomechanisms with reference to previously published reports.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis and previous C1 to C2 laminectomy suffered from cervical myelopathy. On preoperative imaging as well as surgical exploration

PURPOSE: To present a method of posterior arch and lateral mass screw (PALMS) insertion and to prove its feasibility.
METHODS: Four formalin-fixed specimens and 40 macerated atlas vertebras were used to describe the relevant anatomy. The height of the posterior arch was measured on 42 consecutive patients using standard CT of the cervical spine. The operative technique and the special CT reconstructions used for preoperative planning are described. Eight patients underwent posterior fixation using this technique.
RESULTS: We described the relevant anatomy and important anatomical landmarks o

Although previously unreported, neurologic compromise may occur secondary to anomalies of the cervical spine in the oculoauriculovertebral spectrum. Medical records and cephalograms were reviewed from 18 patients with classic Goldenhar syndrome and from 18 normal adults. One patient, a 22-year-old man, had experienced a 5-year history of progressive neurologic compromise from basilar impression; the remaining 17 patients were asymptomatic. Radiographic evidence of cervicovertebral fusion was documented in 11 of 18 patients (61 percent). Fusion occurred at every cervical level other than the at

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective radiographic analysis.
OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of the anatomic features of the craniovertebral junction in patients with occipitalization with and without atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD).
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Atlas occipitalization is a common feature of congenital AAD and usually requires surgical intervention. However, not all instances of occipitalization necessarily lead to AAD. No study has specifically examined and compared the craniovertebral bony morphology in occipitalization with, and without, AAD.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: We reviewed computed tomogra

STUDY DESIGN: Case series and literature review.
OBJECTIVE: We present a new case of a C1 anterior arch fracture after suboccipital craniotomy and C1 laminectomy to add to 3 previously reported cases, thus increasing awareness of this postoperative complication. We also present 2 adult cases of presumably congenital bipartite atlas. The radiographical similarity of these cases raises the possibility of a traumatic cause for some instances of bipartite atlas rather than a congenital defect.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The bipartite atlas is a rare entity that has previously been presumed to r

STUDY DESIGN: A case report.
OBJECTIVE: We report a novel case of torticollis disorder because of a congenital split atlas after minor trauma.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Torticollis experienced after minor trauma in childhood is usually because of atlantoaxial rotatory fixation, which is a common disorder in pediatric patients and is usually diagnosed with computed tomography (CT). CT scanning with 3-dimensional reconstruction, however, showed a unique rotation of split atlas, a congenital anomaly that presented with torticollis.
METHODS: A female child aged 3 years and 11 months presented

A case is reported of a 37-year-old man who developed paraesthesia in the distribution of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve following an injury to the upper cervical spine during a game of rugby. The central pathways of the trigeminal nerve are discussed and it is proposed that mandibular fibres descended beyond their expected level in the spinal trigeminal nucleus, and that it was these fibres which were compressed in the unstable dislocation at the atlanto-axial joint producing the paraesthesia described. Other remote anatomical explanations for the paraesthesia are considered.

A 53 year old man was admitted with severe pain localized high in the neck after he fell from a height of 3-4 meters on his head. Routine radiographic investigation, tomography and CT-scan disclosed a fracture of the right articular apophysis of the first cervical vertebra with diastasis. Complete reduction of the fracture was obtained after 30 days of traction. The patient resumed his full professional activity after consolidation of the fracture site. It is worth mentioning that in the literature the overall results of therapy are very deceptive.
