Predictors of distress and well-being in parents of young children with developmental delays and disabilities: the importance of parent perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Moving from family-centred to child-centred models of service delivery can be stressful for parents as their young children with developmental delays and disabilities transition into school. The purpose of this paper was to explore and compare predictors of both distress and well-being in parents during this transition period. METHODS: A sample of 155 mothers of 113 boys and 42 girls participated in the study. The mean age of the children was 4.9 years and their diagnoses included autism spectrum disorder (52%); unspecified intellectual disability/developmental delay (26%); Down s

Performance of children with and without learning disabilities on Canter's Background Interference Procedure and Koppitz's scoring system for the Bender test.

Performance of 66 children, 30 with and 36 without learning disabilities, in four ways using the Bender Visual-motor Gestalt Test was compared. First, the test with the standard Koppitz scoring procedure, second with the Canter Background Interference Procedure sheet using the standard Koppitz scoring procedure; third, the Bender test on a standard sheet of paper using Canter scoring procedure; and fourth, the Canter Background Interference Procedure (BIP) sheet using the Canter scoring procedure. The effectiveness of the Canter procedure was examined when scored with an age-appropriate normat

Dramatic favorable responses of children with learning disabilities or dyslexia and attention deficit disorder to antimotion sickness medications: four case reports.

Responses of four learning disabled children who showed dramatic improvements to one or more antimotion-sickness-antihistamines and -stimulants are described qualitatively. These cases were selected from a prior quantitative study in which three antihistamines (meclizine, cyclizine, dimenhydrinate) and three stimulants (pemoline, methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine) were tested in variable combinations (using a specific clinical method) for favorable responses by 100 children characterized by diagnostic evidence of learning disabilities and cerebellar-vestibular dysfunctioning. Diagnostic yield of genome sequencing for children with intellectual disability and developmental delay.

BACKGROUND: Genome sequencing (GS) has recently been considered as a first-tier diagnostic tool for individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and developmental delay (DD). In this study, we assess the diagnostic yield of GS for a large cohort of children with ID/DD and describe variants contributing to genetic diagnoses in this cohort. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of consecutive GS results for individuals under 18 years of age with a clinical indication of ID/DD was conducted using data from a clinical diagnostic laboratory. The present analysis included 666 individuals. RESULTS: In

Altered topological organization of the brain functional networks in children with intellectual disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) is one of the most serious developmental disorders of children, characterized by significant limitations in intellectual function and adaptive behaviors. However, topological alterations of functional brain networks in children with ID remain unclear. This study combined resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) data and graph theory analysis to quantify the topological properties of functional brain networks in children with ID. Thirty-four children diagnosed with ID and twenty-eight sex-, age-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC) were included. Global, modul

Intervention-induced cortical thickness changes in Chinese children with reading disability.

Prior research has documented reading improvement and brain changes following intervention in children with reading disability (RD). It remains unclear, however, how specific the brain changes are to different interventions and how SES interacts with different reading interventions in influencing reading improvement. Sixty-seven Chinese children with RD were randomly assigned to a phonological intervention group (PI, N = 24), a morphological intervention group (MI, N = 21), and a waitlist group (WL, N = 22). We found that both interventions effectively improved reading, and the PI improved pho

Are we missing obsessive-compulsive disorder in children with severe intellectual disability?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is being missed in children with severe intellectual disability. Their compulsive behaviours are routinely attributed to autism spectrum disorder or dismissed as challenging behaviour, without systematic consideration of OCD. I argue that this misattribution is predictable, consequential and correctable. The key diagnostic tool is the ego-dystonic/ego-syntonic distinction: OCD rituals are distressing to the child and a change from their baseline, whereas autistic repetitive behaviours are typically comforting. When this distinction is applied, and OCD is tre

Age-Dependent Process Governs Executive Function Disability in Autistic Children.

PURPOSE: Comprehension of syntactic language is facilitated by the executive function of Prefrontal Synthesis (PFS), defined as an ability to deliberately modify and juxtapose mental visuospatial objects. Autistic individuals often experience deficits in PFS. This study aimed to differentiate between two hypotheses regarding PFS acquisition. The first suggests a persistent, age-independent barrier that continuously hinders PFS development. The second proposes an age-dependent factor, such as a critical period for PFS acquisition. These hypotheses predict distinct learning trajectories: the fir

Interventions for children and adolescents with specific learning disability and co-occurring disorders.

Interventions for individuals with specific learning disabilities (SLD) largely focus on performance within a single performance domain (e.g., reading). However, it is more the rule than the exception that individuals with SLD will experience difficulties that span multiple domains (e.g., reading and mathematics), and that co-occur with other disorders (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). In this article, we discuss what has been learned about supporting children and adolescents with SLD affecting multiple performance domains (i.e., reading and mathematics), and with common co-occ

Genetic determinants of global developmental delay and intellectual disability in Ukrainian children.

BACKGROUND: Global developmental delay or intellectual disability usually accompanies various genetic disorders as a part of the syndrome, which may include seizures, autism spectrum disorder and multiple congenital abnormalities. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques have improved the identification of pathogenic variants and genes related to developmental delay. This study aimed to evaluate the yield of whole exome sequencing (WES) and neurodevelopmental disorder gene panel sequencing in a pediatric cohort from Ukraine. Additionally, the study computationally predicted the effect of va

Reading Disability in Children: Exploring the N400 and its Associations with Set-For-Variability.

The N400 event-related potential (ERP), a marker of lexical-semantic processing, can assess the neural basis of reading difficulties. This study examines 1) semantic processes in typically developing (TD) children and children with reading disabilities (RD) using N400 and Set-for-Variability (SfV) profiles and 2) correlations between N400 and SfV. Fifty-one children read congruent and incongruent sentences during EEG. Results showed RD children lacked an N400 effect and had delayed SfV. A negative correlation between SfV and N400 latency in the RD group indicated distinct semantic processing d

Self-rating via video communication in children with disability - a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Different barriers may hinder children with developmental disabilities (DD) from having a voice in research and clinical interventions concerning fundamentally subjective phenomena, such as participation. It is not well-investigated if video communication tools have the potential to reduce these barriers. AIM: This study investigated the feasibility of administering a self-rating instrument measuring participation, Picture My Participation (PmP), via a video communication tool (Zoom), to children with DD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PmP was administered to 17 children with DD (mean ag

Global prevalence of developmental disabilities in children and adolescents: A systematic umbrella review.

AIM: The provisions of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for disability-inclusive education have stimulated a growing interest in ascertaining the prevalence of children with developmental disabilities globally. We aimed to systematically summarize the prevalence estimates of developmental disabilities in children and adolescents reported in systematic reviews and meta-analyses. METHODS: For this umbrella review we searched PubMed, Scopus, Embase, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library for systematic reviews published in English between September 2015 and August 2022. Two revie

Sociodemographic and socioeconomic correlates of learning disability in preterm children in the United States.

BACKGROUND: In 2019, 1 in every 10 infants born in the United States was preterm. Prematurity has life-threatening consequences and causes a range of developmental disabilities, of which learning disability is a prevalent complication. Despite the availability of special services for children living with learning disability, gaps still exist in terms of access due to socioeconomic factors. The aim of this study is to evaluate socioeconomic and sociodemographic correlates of learning disability in preterm children. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the 2016-2018 National Surve
