Association of chemsex and risk of chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis infections: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Chemsex, the use of psychoactive substances to enhance sexual experiences, is increasingly recognized as a public health concern, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). This behavior is associated with risky sexual practices, including condomless sex, multiple partners, and prolonged sexual sessions, which may elevate the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to quantify the association between chemsex and these bacterial STIs. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-ana

Atypical ocular Chlamydia trachomatis infections in two patients attending in a second-level hospital: a case report.

AIM: To report two atypical inclusion conjunctivitis cases due to Chlamydia trachomatis in young adults. METHOD: Transcription mediated amplification for C. trachomatis was performed using Aptima Combo 2 Assay (Hologic, Spain). RESULTS: The first patient was managed as an orbital disorder because he had unilateral location, and ptosis was observed. Orbital nuclear magnetic resonance revealed normal results, and conjunctival biopsy did not indicate significant results. For the second patient, thyroid eye disease was suspected, but the orbital nuclear magnetic resonance revealed normal results

Association of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma infections with susceptibility to ovarian cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers with a high mortality rate in women. Published studies indicate that inflammation, DNA damage, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) are the most important risk factors for ovarian cancer and this could be induced and exacerbated by infectious agents such as Chlamydia trachomatis and Mycoplasma genitalium. The aim of this study was to determine the association between Chlamydia and Mycoplasma infections and the risk of ovarian cancer. METHODS: We carried out a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Go

Validation of a Clinical Prediction Rule to Predict Asymptomatic Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Infections Among Internet-Based Testers.

BACKGROUND: Clinical prediction rules (CPRs) can be used in sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing environments to prioritize individuals at the highest risk of infection and optimize resource allocation. We previously derived a CPR to predict asymptomatic chlamydia and/or gonorrhea (CT/NG) infection among women and heterosexual men at in-person STI clinics based on 5 predictors. Population differences between clinic-based and Internet-based testers may limit the tool's application across settings. The primary objective of this study was to assess the validity, sensitivity, and overall p

Participation, retention, and associated factors of women in a prospective multicenter study on Chlamydia trachomatis infections (FemCure).

Prospective studies are key study designs when attempting to unravel health mechanisms that are widely applicable. Understanding the internal validity of a prospective study is essential to judge a study's quality. Moreover, insights in possible sampling bias and the external validity of a prospective study are useful to judge the applicability of a study's findings. We evaluated participation, retention, and associated factors of women in a multicenter prospective cohort (FemCure) to understand the study's validity.Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infected adult women, negative for HIV, syphilis, a

Characterization of the Horizontal and Vertical Sexual Transmission of Chlamydia Genital Infections in a New Mouse Model.

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted bacterial pathogen worldwide, and there is a need to control this epidemic. So far there is no established animal model in which both the horizontal and the vertical transmission of Chlamydia can be studied. To implement a horizontal sexual transmission model, male mice were inoculated in the meatus urethra with Chlamydia muridarum and they were caged with naive female mice. Urine and vaginal swab specimens were collected for culture. To study vertical transmission, newborns were euthanized and specimens were cultured. As controls,

Impact of a labour disruption affecting local public health on the incidence of chlamydia infections in Toronto.

INTRODUCTION: Labour disruptions that interrupt services can be a natural experiment to examine the effect of halting a program. A five-week municipal labour disruption in Toronto during the summer of 2009 provided an opportunity to investigate the impact of reduced sexual health services. METHODS: We examined the incidence of reported chlamydia in Toronto during the five years (2004-2008) preceding the labour disruption and during the periods just before, during, and after the labour disruption. Comparisons of actual reports for 2009 were made to immediately adjacent periods around the labou

Serological and nested PCR survey to determine the occurrence of Chlamydia infections in the Polish cattle population.

Chlamydia spp. is an obligate intracellular agent that causes chlamydiosis in animals and humans. The aim of the presented study was to investigate the prevalence of Chlamydia infection in the Polish cattle population, both asymptomatic and having reproductive disorders. The study was performed on 4,475 serum samples collected from 16 Polish provinces at the turn of 2009-2011. The samples (3,419 from asymptomatic cattle and 1,056 from cattle with reproductive disorders) were tested by complement fixation test (CFT). Moreover, 160 and 201 samples of biological materials from both groups of catt

Low rate of syphilis screening among high-risk emergency department patients tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia infections.

BACKGROUND: Implementing national recommendations for syphilis screening is not feasible in the emergency department (ED) setting. The purpose of this study was to determine the syphilis screening rate among ED patients tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia (GC/CT) and the syphilis prevalence among those who were tested. METHODS: A 1-year retrospective cohort study in an urban ED. At the time of this study, there were no explicit syphilis screening guidelines and testing was at the discretion of the treating physician. We determined the proportion of all GC/CT-tested patients who also underwent

Chlamydia trachomatis serovar distribution and other concurrent sexually transmitted infections in heterosexual men with urethritis in Italy.

The distribution of Chlamydia trachomatis serovars among 157 heterosexual male patients with urethritis and the presence of coinfections with other sexually transmitted infections were studied. One hundred seventeen (74.5%) patients, with a mean age of 33.7 years, were Italians, whereas 40 (25.5%) were immigrants coming from eastern European countries, Africa, and South America. All the immigrants and 82 (70.0%) Italian patients reported sex with prostitutes. Out of 157 patients, 73 (46.5%) were found positive for C. trachomatis in urethral secretions and eight different C. trachomatis serovar

The use and performance of oral-throat rinses to detect pharyngeal Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis infections.

Gonococcal and chlamydial infections in the pharynx can occur as a consequence of oral sex. Currently, diagnosis of these infections typically requires a swab specimen to be collected from the posterior pharynx. However, we assessed the diagnostic adequacy of using commercial mouthwash or water as an oral-throat rinse and subsequent testing with a nucleic acid amplification test (Gen-Probe APTIMA Combo 2 assay; Gen-Probe, San Diego, CA). Mouthwash and water samples, spiked with varying amounts of gonorrhea and chlamydia, remained positive for both organisms for up to 2 weeks after storage at r

Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori and cytomegalovirus infections and the risk of peripheral arterial disease in young women.

Sero-epidemiological case control studies have observed positive relations between infections with Chlamydia pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori or cytomegalovirus (CMV) and the occurrence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke. Moreover, positive relations between 'infection burden' and CAD and the role of inflammation have recently been described. However, the relations between infection, inflammation and the occurrence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) have not been reported so far. We performed a multi-centre population-based case-control study, using serum samples of 228 young female

Identification of individual genotypes of Chlamydia trachomatis from experimentally mixed serovars and mixed infections among trachoma patients.

Genetic polymorphisms in the major outer membrane protein gene (omp-1) of Chlamydia trachomatis B and Ba serovars have been demonstrated in Tunisian isolates. A total of 15 of 27 unique sequence signatures or omp-1 genotypes were identified. However, differentiation of unique signatures from sequences that reflect those of strains involved in a mixed infection is necessary to define the molecular epidemiology of chlamydial ocular infections. We devised a strategy for identifying mixed infections by characterizing their effects on omp-1 genotyping. Various ratios of elementary bodies from organ
