OBJECTIVE: To describe pregnancies that resulted from in vitro matured oocytes derived from two unstimulated, anovulatory patients with polycystic ovary syndrome after priming with hCG before oocyte retrieval.

During the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle, endometrial stromal cells differentiate into decidual cells, which play a crucial role in implantation and maintenance of pregnancy. In this and our previous study, we demonstrate that glycoprotein hormone free alpha-subunit potentiates progesterone-mediated decidualization of human endometrial stromal cells in vitro. In this study, the NUCC-3 choriocarcinoma cell line was used as an in vitro placental cell model to investigate the effects of follistatin on basal and GnRH-stimulated hCG secretion and/or its subunit mRNA levels. A 69-year-old male patient presented with bloody pleural fluid effusion and elevated beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) levels obtained by thoracentesis. The patient's condition rapidly deteriorated, and he died. The autopsy revealed primary pulmonary choriocarcinoma. Early diagnosis of choriocarcinoma based on β-hCG levels in the pleural fluid may be possible.

Medical abortion with combined mifepristone and misoprostol is a highly effective, safe, and widely used method for medical termination of pregnancy. In this review, it is shown that self-testing with a urine human chorionic gonadotropin stix (detection limit greater than 25 IU/l) four weeks after administration of medication is a safe, practical, and cheap method to determine successful termination.
