Incidence and localization of sister chromatid exchanges induced by nickel and chromium compounds.

Carcinogenic nickel compounds enhanced the incidence of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in a concentration-dependent fashion in intact Chinese hamster ovary cells. There was a preferential induction of these exchanges in the heterochromatic regions of the chromosomes. CaCrO4 also caused a dose-dependent induction of SCEs. However, in contrast to NiCl2, the exchanges induced by CaCrO4 were not localized in any particular chromosomal region. The total incidence of exchanges was higher with CaCrO4 than with NiCl2. CaCrO4, crystalline NiS and NiCl2 enhanced the incidence of SCEs at concentration

Experimental bases for ascorbic acid therapy of poisoning by hexavalent chromium compounds.

The most frequent outcome of the usually transdermal absorption of hexavalent chromium compounds is uraemia due to tubular necrosis. We have confirmed earlier observations that this can be prevented by the immediate application of ascorbic acid (AA) with the aim of reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The spontaneous reducing capacity of samples of serum and plasma for Cr(VI) compounds was polarographically determined to be about 2 ppm. Addition of AA in doses of 50 to 1000 ppm led to a rapid and dose-dependent reduction of chromium(VI), which was studied on the concentration level of 5 ppm. For exampl…

Enhancement of nucleolar RNA synthesis by chromium (III) in regenerating rat liver.

Rats pretreated with CrCl3 at an intraperitoneal dose of 5 mg Cr/kg body weight, and then subjected to partial hepatectomy concentrated Cr in the regenerating liver cells, especially in the nucleoli. Hepatic RNA synthesis induced by partial hepatectomy was further enhanced by Cr(III) administration without changes of the nucleotide pool size at least for 12 hr after the hepatectomy. Of the RNA species newly synthesized, the synthesis of nucleolar RNA was predominantly enhanced. The nucleolar RNA thus synthesized in the regenerating liver of Cr(III)-dosed rats followed normal processing into rR

Cutaneous absorption of trivalent chromium: tissue levels and treatment by exchange transfusion.

ABSTRACT A man was accidentally immersed in hot acidic trivalent chromium sulphate solution but none was swallowed. The clinical course was dominated by burns, intravascular haemolysis, and acute renal failure. Blood concentrations of chromium were measured during treatment and tissue concentrations were measured at death. Exchange transfusion reduced blood chromium concentrations by two-thirds. The total quantities of chromium absorbed and removed by various routes were calculated. In-vitro studies showed that the chromium solution did not directly cause haemolysis.

Reduced chromium retention in patients with hemochromatosis, a possible basis of hemochromatotic diabetes.

Chromium (III) has recently been shown to be an essential trace mineral in rats, being required for normal function of insulin in controlling glucose metabolism. Chromium is transported in the body bound to transferrin, where it binds competitively with iron. Hemochromatosis is an iron storage disease in humans characterized by highly saturated transferrin levels and sometimes by diabetes. We postulated that the diabetes may be due to exclusion of chromium by iron at metabolic binding sites. 51Cr(III) was administered i.v. to 5 normal males, 6 patients with hemochromatosis prior to therapeutic…

The effect of parity and time between pregnancies on maternal hair chromium concentration.

Values for hair chromium concentration of nulliparous women and parous women who had just given birth to a child were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Mean values for hair chromium concentration of nulliparous and parous subjects were 309 +/- 23 and 117 +/- 10 ppb, respectively. The difference was highly significant (P less than 0.001). No further significant decrease in hair chromium was observed in women who had borne more than one child. Hair chromium concentration increased significantly with the amount of time between pregnancies, especially when at least 4 years had pas…

Study of the thermodynamics of chromium(III) and chromium(VI) binding to iron(II/III)oxide or magnetite or ferrite and magnanese(II) iron (III) oxide or jacobsite or manganese ferrite nanoparticles.

Removal of chromium(III) or (VI) from aqueous solution was achieved using Fe3O4, and MnFe2O4 nanomaterials. The nanomaterials were synthesized using a precipitation method and characterized using XRD. The size of the nanomaterials was determined to be 22.4±0.9 nm (Fe3O4) and 15.5±0.5 nm (MnFe2O4). The optimal binding pH for chromium(III) and chromium(VI) were pH 6 and pH 3. Isotherm studies were performed, under light and dark conditions, to determine the capacity of the nanomaterials. The capacities for the light studies with MnFe2O4 and Fe3O4 were determined to be 7.189 and 10.63 mg/g, respe…

Magnetocaloric effect observations near room temperature in few-layered chromium telluride (Cr2Te3).

Transition metal telluride compositions are explored extensively for their unique magnetic behavior. Few-layered chromium telluride (Cr2Te3) exhibits a near-room-temperature phase transition, where the material can be effectively used in applications such as magnetic refrigeration. Compared to existing magnetocaloric materials, Heusler alloys, and rare-earth-based alloys, the large-scale synthesis of mechanically exfoliated Cr2Te3 involves less complexity, resulting in a stable composition. Compared to existing tellurides, Cr2Te3 exhibited a large change in magnetic entropy (|ΔSM|) of 1.88 J k…

Hexavalent chromium induced autophagy-dependent mTOR expression mediated by upregulation of HMGA2.

High mobility group A2 (HMGA2) overexpression is often observed in cancers. Previously, we found that HMGA2 contributed to hexavalent chromium [Cr (VI)]-mediated autophagy. In this study, interestingly, Cr (VI) treatment triggered both autophagy and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in vivo ( BALB/c mice, 0.5 and 1.5 mg/kg, p.o.) and in vitro (0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 μM in A549 and HELF cells), and both autophagy and mTOR were implicated in Cr (VI)-initiated cell growth. Autophagy and mTOR were both significantly induced by HMGA2 overexpression in vivo (BALB/c mice were intratracheal injected …

Chromium-Doped Biomass-Based Hydrochar-Catalyzed Synthesis of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from Glucose.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile carbohydrate-derived platform chemical that has been used for the synthesis of a number of commercially valuable compounds. In this study, several chromium (Cr)-doped, biomass-derived hydrochar catalysts were synthesized via the one-pot method using starch, eucalyptus wood, and bagasse as carbon sources. Then, the performance of these synthesized materials for the catalytic conversion of glucose into HMF was evaluated by, primarily, the yield of HMF. The synergistic interactions between the Cr salt and the different biomass components were investiga…

Stabilization Mechanism of Highly Toxic Hexavalent Chromium during Carbothermal Reactions in Lettuce.

As a remediation plant for remediating cadmium-contaminated soil, highly toxic Cr-(VI) is enriched in lettuce, making the rational treatment of this biomass a challenge to be solved. In this work, CaO, which is cheap and available, was used as a stabilizer for the pyrolysis of polluted lettuce. Results revealed that the Cr-(VI):Cr ratio in lettuce-derived biochar obtained at 800 °C decreased by 93.6% in comparison to that at 400 °C due to the immobilization effects. Spearman correlation analysis also revealed that Cr-(VI) was negatively correlated with CaO dosage (R 2 = -0.81, p ≤ 0.01) and py

Mechanisms and targeted treatments of cobalt-encephalopathy from cobalt-chromium orthopedic implants.

5-10 million persons are living with cobalt-chromium joint or spinal implants therefore are systemically exposed to ionic and nanoparticulate cobalt-chromium metallosis degradation products from wear or corrosive mechanisms. Cobalt's toxidrome (cobaltism) is characterized by neurologic, cardiovascular, immune, and constitutional symptoms and findings. Orthopedic-Implant-Cobaltism (OIC) became recognized in 2010 related to metal-on-metal hip resurfacings and replacement of which two million were fitted before largely silent market recall. Recently the at-risk population has be expanded to any p…
