Policy Inaction Risks Breaching the 2°C Climate Target.

Despite repeated increases in national climate pledges since the Paris Agreement, a significant gap remains between collective ambition and the action required to meet its temperature goals. Integrating these pledges with global models, we show that full implementation would still lead to approximately 1.7°C of warming, missing the 1.5°C target. When considering ongoing policy inaction, a cumulative shortfall of 505 GtCO2e in anticipated mitigation is expected, and this warming increases by nearly 0.3°C, drastically narrowing the window to stay below 2.0°C. Our analysis reveals a critical disp

Climate and urbanization drive changes in the habitat suitability of Schistosoma mansoni competent snails in Brazil.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Schistosoma parasites. Schistosoma are obligate parasites of freshwater Biomphalaria snails, so controlling snail populations is critical to reducing transmission risk. As snails are sensitive to environmental conditions, we expect their distribution is significantly impacted by global change. Here, we leveraged machine learning, remote sensing, and 30 years of snail occurrence records to map the historical and current distribution of competent Biomphalaria throughout Brazil. We identified key features influencing the distribution of su

Work-related injury factors and safety climate perception in truck drivers.

INTRODUCTION: The trucking industry has a high burden of work-related injuries. This study examined factors, such as safety climate perceptions, that may impact injury risk. METHOD: A random sample of 9800 commercial driver's license holders (CDL) were sent surveys, only 4360 were eligible truck drivers. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were developed to describe the population and identify variables associated with work-related injury. RESULTS: 2189 drivers completed the pertinent interview questions. Driving less-than-truckload, daytime sleepiness, pressure to work fas

Dataset on the global distribution of shallow groundwater.

Shallow groundwater (GW), defined as the water table of unconfined or perched aquifers that is near enough to the land surface to influence the vadose zone and the surface soil moisture, impacts land surface water, energy, and carbon cycles by providing additional moisture to the root zone via capillary fluxes. Although the interactions of shallow GW and the terrestrial land surface are widely recognized, incorporating shallow GW into the land surface, climate, and agroecosystem models is not yet possible due to the lack of groundwater data. Groundwater systems are affected by various factors,

Effectiveness of estuarine adaptation strategies under future climate conditions.

Estuaries are among the most intensively used aquatic environments, where steep physical and biogeochemical gradients interact with dense human populations and valuable ecosystems. Intense human usage has historically led to ecological degradation and persistent use conflicts, in many temperate estuaries that host major inland ports such as the Elbe estuary in the North Sea. Climate change, with its associated effects on sea levels and global temperatures, represents a significant challenge for the functioning of these systems. The impact on estuarine hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics and water

Spatial variations in Leishmaniasis: A biogeographic approach to mapping the distribution of Leishmania species.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is the most prevalent form of Leishmaniasis and is widely endemic in the Americas. Several species of Leishmania are responsible for CL, a severely neglected tropical disease and the treatment of CL vary according to the different species of Leishmania. We proposed to map the distribution of the Leishmania species reported in French Guiana (FG) using a biogeographic approach based on environmental predictors. We also measured species endemism i.e., the uniqueness of species to a defined geographic location. Our results show that the distribution patterns varied bet

Effect of food swap recommendations on the healthfulness and carbon footprint of grocery purchases in a naturalistic online store: A randomized parallel trial.

BACKGROUND: Modeling studies suggest that simple dietary "swaps" in which just one food is replaced with another could yield both health and environmental benefits, but it remains unclear whether consumers make such changes when prompted. We tested whether recommending swaps improved the healthfulness and reduced the carbon footprint of simulated online grocery selections. METHODS AND FINDINGS: In May-June 2025, we recruited 1,201 US adults ages 18+ for a randomized parallel trial. Participants completed 3 weekly study visits. In the first visit, participants shopped in a naturalistic online

Correlations between COVID-19 and dengue obtained via the study of South America, Africa and Southeast Asia during the 2020s.

A dramatic increase in the number of outbreaks of dengue has recently been reported, and climate change is likely to extend the geographical spread of the disease. In this context, this paper shows how a neural network approach can incorporate dengue and COVID-19 data as well as external factors (such as social behaviour or climate variables), to develop predictive models that could improve our knowledge and provide useful tools for health policy makers. Through the use of neural networks with different social and natural parameters, in this paper we define a Correlation Model through which we

Upland Methane Sinks Under Climate Change: Global Patterns, Drivers and Trends.

Well-aerated upland soils serve as a crucial biological sink for atmospheric methane (CH4), playing a key role in mitigating climate change. However, current understanding of how this CH4 sink responds to global climate change remains limited. To address this, we integrated 1092 observational data points to construct a dataset covering multiple global change factors and used meta-analysis to quantify the response mechanisms of the upland CH4 sink. Results show that warming, reduced precipitation, and elevated carbon dioxide concentrations significantly strengthened the CH4 sink, while increase

The mediating role of depression and moderating role of self-consciousness in the relationship between parental negative control and adolescents' perceived school climate.

BACKGROUND: A positive school climate benefits adolescents in multiple developmental dimensions. However, theoretical frameworks suggest that detrimental parenting practices can trigger adolescents' negative emotional states, which may skew their perceptions of school climate. Although self-consciousness, a critical intrapersonal trait, may mitigate these adverse effects, limited research has empirically explored its moderating role in the context where negative parenting influences adolescents' mental health and school-related outcomes. Thereby, this study investigates how parental negative c

The impact of climate change on the risk factors for tuberculosis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a major public health risk in many countries. The current incidence of disease exceeds guidelines proposed by the World Health Organisation and United Nations. Whilst the relationship between climate change and TB has surfaced in recent literature, it remains neglected in global agendas. There is a need to acknowledge TB as a climate-sensitive disease to facilitate its eradication. OBJECTIVE: To review epidemiological and prediction model studies that explore how climate change may affect the risk factors for TB, as outlined in the Global Tuberc

Medical waste management in Independent Midwifery Clinics: A discussion paper on the implications for planetary health and maternal and newborn health in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Climate change significantly threatens planetary health and sexual, reproductive, maternal, and newborn health (SR/MNH). The healthcare sector contributes substantially to global carbon emissions. In Indonesia, Independent Midwifery Clinics (PMBs), crucial community SR/MNH providers, generate diverse healthcare waste, including infectious materials. Despite national mandates, PMBs face persistent barriers to proper waste handling, leading to practices like open burning that cause contamination, infection, and contribute to carbon emissions, impacting SR/MNH outcomes. Integrated region-specific modeling of H5 avian influenza in Asia using ENSO-based forecasts.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), particularly of the H5 subtype, remains a persistent threat to poultry, wildlife, and public health across Asia. This study quantifies the influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), using the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) as the primary predictor, on the climate-driven dynamics of H5 HPAI through region- and host-stratified generalized additive models (GAMs). Seven region-host strata across Asia were modeled separately, revealing pronounced heterogeneity in event frequency. A clear negative correlation with MEI was identified in domestic pou

Genome-Wide Signatures and Ecological Strategies Show the Adaptation of an Alpine Rhododendron Across Elevations.

Understanding how plants adapt to elevational niches is essential for uncovering mechanisms of natural selection and diversity patterns in mountain systems. Integrating genomic and ecological approaches is therefore important for advancing our knowledge of plant adaptation and informing conservation under climate change. In this study, we investigate 15 populations of an alpine shrub Rhododendron intricatum in the Mt. Gongga region of the eastern Hengduan Mountains, focusing on genomic and phenotypic responses across elevations. Genotype-environment association analyses identified multiple out

Implications of Changing Temperatures on the Growth, Fecundity and Survival of Intermediate Host Snails of Schistosomiasis: A Systematic Review.

Climate change has been predicted to increase the global mean temperature and to alter the ecological interactions among organisms. These changes may play critical roles in influencing the life history traits of the intermediate hosts (IHs). This review focused on studies and disease models that evaluate the potential effect of temperature rise on the ecology of IH snails and the development of parasites within them. The main focus was on IH snails of schistosome parasites that cause schistosomiasis in humans. A literature search was conducted on Google Scholar, EBSCOhost and PubMed databases

The alteration of the suitability patterns of Leishmania infantum due to climate change in Iran.

Leishmaniasis is the most important parasitic infection in Iran. The aim of this study was to model the changing suitability patterns of Leishmania infantum, the causative agent of visceral leishmaniasis for the 21st century in the country. Temperature, precipitation, and aridity-nature distribution limiting bioclimatic variables were involved in the ecological modelling. The altitudinal trends were considered by using 100 m bars. In Iran, the topographical patterns strongly impact the changing patterns of the suitability of L. infantum due to climate change. In general, climate change will de

Projected sediment supply deficits threaten intertidal wetland resilience to sea-level rise in southeast Australia.

Estuarine intertidal wetlands, positioned at the interface of land and sea, are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise and other climate change threats such as flooding and storm-driven erosion. Sustaining these ecosystems and their services requires evidence-based projections of wetland resilience under multiple climate futures while explicitly accounting for uncertainty. Here, we integrated the revised universal soil loss equation with updated rainfall projections from the New South Wales and Australian Regional Climate Modelling (NARCliM2.0) to estimate potential sediment delivery to New South

Interpersonal- and Community-Level Risk Factors for Adolescent Obesity: An Examination of Sexual Identity, School Violence, and School Climate in a Large Sample of Urban Adolescents.

Sexual minority adolescents are more likely to have obesity compared to their heterosexual peers, but little is known about potential contributors to this disparity that lie outside of individual-level health behaviors, such as diet and exercise. One possible contributor is school violence victimization, a factor associated with overweight/obesity in adolescence. Another possible contributor is school climate, which is associated with feelings of safety and connectedness that can lower the likelihood of school violence victimization. Moreover, even less is known about relationships among all t

Body proportions in Late Pleistocene Europe and modern human origins.

Body proportions covary with climate, apparently as the result of climatic selection. Ontogenic research and migrant studies have demonstrated that body proportions are largely genetically controlled and are under low selective rates; thus studies of body form can provide evidence for evolutionarily short-term dispersals and/or gene flow. Following these observations, competing models of modern human origins yield different predictions concerning body proportion shifts in Late Pleistocene Europe. Replacement predicts that the earliest modern Europeans will possess "tropical" body proportions (
