Interannual Variability in Greenhouse Gas Emissions Challenges Post-Restoration Net Sink Predictions in California Delta Wetlands.

Globally, wetlands can sequester and store large amounts of soil carbon over the long term due to high primary productivity and slow decomposition. Yet centuries of drainage for agriculture and development have turned many of these carbon sinks into greenhouse gas (GHG) sources. Restoring degraded wetlands, particularly in peat-rich landscapes, is increasingly promoted as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation. However, the trajectory and timing of recovery remain uncertain, especially given the complex interplay among vegetation dynamics, hydrology, and GHG fluxes. In this stud

Advances in carbon capture, conversion, and utilization: A review of sustainable chemical production pathways.

Rising carbon emissions have intensified global climate change, creating an urgent need for innovative solutions that generate value while also reducing emissions. Carbon capture, conversion, and utilization (CCCU) is a transformational technique that captures and converts CO2 from energy and industrial sources into valuable fuels, chemicals, and materials. This review examines the current state of CCCU technologies, highlighting innovative materials including solvents, solid sorbents, and membranes, as well as main CO2 capture methodologies like pre-combustion, post-combustion, and oxy-fuel c

Brood Chamber Carbonate Chemistry in the oyster Ostrea edulis Is Dynamically Shaped by Warming, Acidification, and Ventilation.

Brooding organisms can modify the chemical environment experienced by developing offspring, potentially altering their exposure to climate change. In marine systems, however, the carbonate chemistry of brood chambers, and the mechanisms governing it, remain poorly resolved. Here, we combine high-resolution pH and CO2 measurements of the empty brood chamber (i.e., mantle cavity above gills) in the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) while also tracking valve gape to quantify how warming, ocean acidification, and ventilation interact to shape the internal environment experienced by larvae durin

Cultivating a Glocal Virtual Classroom for Planetary Health.

The growing worldwide challenges of climate change, environmental degradation with biodiversity loss, and systemic inequities call for accessible, transformative, and impactful planetary health education that embraces a global perspective. However, traditional international learning experiences favor those with financial advantages, limiting equitable access to (planetary health) knowledge, intercultural collaboration competencies, and leadership opportunities. To address this challenge, the University Medical Center (UMC) Utrecht in the Netherlands and St. Luke's Medical Center College of Med

Enhancing physio biochemical traits and yield of common buckwheat Fagopyrum esculentum with rice husk biochar and nano iron oxide under water stress.

Climate change is making droughts more frequent, which is a major problem for crop yield, especially for crops that are vulnerable to drought, such as common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum). Drought stress affects negatively on physiological and biochemical processes of plants, leading to reduced yields. This study addresses the knowledge gap regarding effective strategies to mitigate drought-induced damage and enhance productivity in buckwheat. We hypothesized that iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) and rice husk biochar could improve drought tolerance in buckwheat by modulating its physio

A deep learning and molecular modeling approach to repurposing Cangrelor as a potential inhibitor of Nipah virus.

Deforestation, urbanization, and climate change have significantly increased the risk of zoonotic diseases. Nipah virus (NiV) of Paramyxoviridae family and Henipavirus genus is transmitted by Pteropus bats. Climate-induced changes in bat migration patterns and food availability enhances the virus's adaptability, in turn increasing the potential for transmission and outbreak risk. NiV infection has high human fatality rate. With no antiviral drugs or vaccines available, exploring the complex machinery involved in viral RNA synthesis presents a promising target for therapy. Drug repurposing prov

Analysing the role of Fe (II) on flocculation of sand-clay mixtures under estuarine mixing.

Estuaries are fragile environment that are most affected by climate change. One of the major consequences of climate change on estuarine processes is the enhancement in salt intrusion leading to higher salinity values. This has several implications on the estuarine sediment dynamics. Of the various factors that affect the flocculation of cohesive sediments, salinity and turbulence have been recognized as to have great significance. Many of the estuaries are contaminated with heavy metals, of which, the concentration of Iron (Fe (II)) are generally on the higher range. However, the influence of

Alterations in mitochondrial structure and function in response to environmental temperature changes in Apostichopus japonicus.

Global temperatures have risen as a result of climate change, and the resulting warmer seawater will exert physiological stresses on many aquatic animals, including Apostichopus japonicus. It has been suggested that the sensitivity of aquatic poikilothermal animals to climate change is closely related to mitochondrial function. Therefore, understanding the interaction between elevated temperature and mitochondrial functioning is key to characterizing organisms' responses to heat stress. However, little is known about the mitochondrial response to heat stress in A. japonicus. In this work, we i

Investigating the relationships between chemical element concentrations and discharge to improve our understanding of their transport patterns in rural catchments under subtropical climate conditions.

Solute and particulate elemental concentrations (C) exhibit different responses to changes in discharge (Q), and those relationships are not well understood in subtropical agricultural environments. The objective is to describe the transport processes of different chemical elements during a set of contrasted rainfall events (2011-2015) that occurred in a small rural catchment under subtropical climate. The study was carried out in the Lajeado Ferreira Creek catchment (1.23 km2), southern Brazil. To this end, the concentrations in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), Cl-, NO3-, SO4-, ten chemical el

Cooler temperatures destabilize RNA interference and increase susceptibility of disease vector mosquitoes to viral infection.

BACKGROUND: The impact of global climate change on the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases is the subject of extensive debate. The transmission of mosquito-borne viral diseases is particularly complex, with climatic variables directly affecting many parameters associated with the prevalence of disease vectors. While evidence shows that warmer temperatures often decrease the extrinsic incubation period of an arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus), exposure to cooler temperatures often predisposes disease vector mosquitoes to higher infection rates. RNA interference (RNAi) pathways are essen

Growth and nutritive value of cassava (Manihot esculenta Cranz.) are reduced when grown in elevated CO.

Global food security in a changing climate depends on both the nutritive value of staple crops as well as their yields. Here, we examined the direct effect of atmospheric CO(2) on cassava (Manihot esculenta Cranz., manioc), a staple for 750 million people worldwide. Cassava is poor in nutrients and contains high levels of cyanogenic glycosides that break down to release toxic hydrogen cyanide when damaged. We grew cassava at three concentrations of CO(2) (C(a): 360, 550 and 710 ppm) supplied together with nutrient solution containing either 1 mM or 12 mM nitrogen. We found that total plant bio

Parental guidance and problem solving in illustrated children's books: the representation of the family as a pedagogical actor.

The preschool period is a critical time for developing emotional regulation and problem-solving skills. Children frequently encounter various stressors such as separation anxiety, peer bullying, and sibling rivalry, which require effective coping mechanisms. Parental support is crucial in developing children's problem-solving skills. Children's literature is an important resource in showing children the problems they may encounter and how to cope with them. This study aims to examine how the role of the family in children's problem-solving processes is represented in illustrated children's boo

Acidity and organic matter promote abiotic nitric oxide production in drying soils.

Soils are an important source of NO, particularly in dry lands because of trade-offs that develop between biotic and abiotic NO-producing processes when soils dry out. Understanding how drier climates may offset the balance of these trade-offs as soils transition toward more arid states is, therefore, critical to estimating global NO budgets, especially because drylands are expected to increase in size. We measured NO emission pulses after wetting soils from similar lithologies along an altitudinal gradient in the Sierra Nevada, CA, where mean annual precipitation varied from 670 to 1500 mm. A

Emerging Arthropod-Borne Viruses Hijack the Host Cell Cytoskeleton During Neuroinvasion.

Arthropod-borne viral infections, ranging from asymptomatic to fatal diseases, are expanding from endemic to nonendemic areas. Climate change, deforestation, and globalization favor their spread. Although arboviral manifestations mainly determine the onset of generalized symptoms, distinct clinical signs have been assessed, depending on the particular arthropod-borne virus (arbovirus) involved in the infectious process. A number of arboviruses cause neuroinvasive diseases in vertebrate hosts, with acute to chronic outcomes. Long-term neurological sequelae can include cognitive dysfunction and

In Vitro Propagation of Threatened Agave Species Using a Two-Stage System.

Agaves are plants with multiple possibilities of use and are naturally tolerant to low water availability conditions and high temperatures. This makes them species of great interest in the context of the necessary substitution of crops due to climate change. Unfortunately, the overexploitation of wild specimens has endangered many species of the genus that have not been domesticated or cultivated intensively. In vitro mass culture and propagation techniques have emerged as a very efficient option to produce agave plants that can be used without damage to the natural populations. A protocol is

System-Centered Care: How Bureaucracy and Racialization Decenter Attempts at Person-Centered Mental Health Care.

This article presents a study exploring structural biases within mental health organizations, in the context of person-centered care-an emerging framework for health systems globally. Findings revealed how surrounding institutional structures conditioned a powerful influence on clinical operations, in which there is a risk for clients to be systemically seen as a non-person, that is, as a racialized or bureaucratic object. Specifically, the article elucidates how racial profiles could become determinants of care within institutions; and how another, covert form of institutional objectification
