Physical activity monitoring in adolescents with juvenile fibromyalgia: findings from a clinical trial of cognitive-behavioral therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM) is a chronic musculoskeletal pain condition that is associated with reduced physical function. Recent research has demonstrated that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective in improving daily functioning among adolescents with JFM. However, it is not known whether these improvements were accompanied by increased physical activity levels. Our objective was to analyze secondary data from a randomized clinical trial of CBT to examine whether CBT was associated with improvement in objectively measured physical activity and whether actigraphy indices c

Online cognitive behavioral therapy for bulimic type disorders, delivered in the community by a nonclinician: qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy is recommended in the National Institute for Clinical Excellence guidelines for the treatment of bulimia nervosa. In order to make this treatment option more accessible to patients, interactive online CBT programs have been developed that can be used in the user's own home, in privacy, and at their convenience. Studies investigating online CBT for bulimic type eating disorders have provided promising results and indicate that, with regular support from a clinician or trained support worker, online CBT can be effective in reducing bulimic symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of juvenile fibromyalgia: a multisite, single-blind, randomized, controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder in children and adolescents for which there are no evidence-based treatments. The objective of this multisite, single-blind, randomized clinical trial was to test whether cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) was superior to fibromyalgia (FM) education in reducing functional disability, pain, and symptoms of depression in juvenile FMS. METHODS: Participants were 114 adolescents (ages 11-18 years) with juvenile FMS. After receiving stable medications for 8 weeks, patients were randomized to either CBT or FM

Deficits in emotion-regulation skills predict alcohol use during and after cognitive-behavioral therapy for alcohol dependence.

OBJECTIVE: As emotion regulation is widely considered to be a primary motive in the misuse of alcohol, our aim in the study was to investigate whether deficits in adaptive emotion-regulation skills maintain alcohol dependence (AD). METHOD: A prospective study investigated whether emotion-regulation skills were associated with AD and whether these skills predicted alcohol use during and after treatment for AD. Participants were 116 individuals treated for AD with cognitive-behavioral therapy. Emotion regulation and severity of AD symptoms were assessed by self-report. Alcohol use during treatm

Therapist adherence to manualized cognitive-behavioral therapy for anger management delivered to veterans with PTSD via videoconferencing.

Therapist adherence to a manualized cognitive-behavioral anger management group treatment (AMT) was compared between therapy delivered via videoconference (VC) and the traditional in-person modality, using data from a large, randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of AMT for veterans with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder. Therapist adherence was rated for the presence or absence of process and content treatment elements. Secondary analyses were conducted using a repeated measures ANOVA. Overall adherence to the protocol was excellent (M = 96%, SD = 1%). Findings ind

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for children with functional abdominal pain and their parents decreases pain and other symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Unexplained abdominal pain in children has been shown to be related to parental responses to symptoms. This randomized controlled trial tested the efficacy of an intervention designed to improve outcomes in idiopathic childhood abdominal pain by altering parental responses to pain and children's ways of coping and thinking about their symptoms. METHODS: Two hundred children with persistent functional abdominal pain and their parents were randomly assigned to one of two conditions-a three-session intervention of cognitive-behavioral treatment targeting parents' responses to their c

The cost effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa delivered via telemedicine versus face-to-face.

OBJECTIVE: A number of effective treatments for bulimia nervosa have been developed, but they are infrequently used, in part due to problems with dissemination. The goal of this study was to examine the cost effectiveness of telemedicine delivery of cognitive behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa. METHOD: A randomized controlled trial of face-to-face versus telemedicine cognitive behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa. One hundred twenty eight women with DSM-IV bulimia nervosa or eating disorder, not otherwise specified subsyndromal variants of bulimia nervosa were randomized to 20 sessions …

[A case report of claustrophobia with panic attack due to an MRI, treated by cognitive-behavioral therapy].

Claustrophobia, this fear of being locked up without being able to escape, affects about 4 to 5% of subjects in the general population. For some years, studies tackle this trouble in the context of medical exam and treatments (MRI, radiotherapy, etc.). Studies show that cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) obtain satisfying results for treating such patients. Here, we present a case report of a CBT intervention for a patient suffering from a cancer and whose claustrophobia impeded her treatment.

Domains of life satisfaction in social anxiety disorder: relation to symptoms and response to cognitive-behavioral therapy.

A general sense of satisfaction with life has been shown to be discriminable from symptom levels and disability in clinical populations. The current study focused on the utility of identifying domains of life satisfaction in social anxiety disorder and differential changes in these domains following cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT). An exploratory principal axis factor analysis of the items of the Quality of Life Inventory in clients with a principal diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (N=138) yielded four domains of life satisfaction: (1) Achievement, (2) Social Functioning, (3) Per

Comparative effects of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy in depression: a meta-analytic approach.

UNLABELLED: This article reviews the efficacy of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) in depression compared to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or behavioral therapy (BT). In this review, only studies in which at least 13 therapy sessions were performed have been included, and a sufficient number of patients per group were treated (N > or = 20). With regard to outcome criteria, the results were reviewed for improvements in depressive symptoms, general psychiatric symptoms, and social functioning. Six studies met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: In 58 of the 60 comparisons (97%) pe

Effectiveness of guided self-help, guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy, and face-to-face cognitive behavioral therapy for depression and anxiety: protocols of four parallel randomized controlled non-inferiority trials of the Finnish First-Line Therapies -Initiative (FLT-Step).

BACKGROUND: Low-intensity cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based guided self-help (GSH) and guided internet-delivered CBT (GiCBT) have demonstrated equivalent effectiveness and superior cost-efficiency compared to traditional face-to-face CBT (fCBT) for treating depression and anxiety. This study addresses critical gaps in the current understanding of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of various CBT interventions for depression and anxiety within a stepped care model. METHODS: We describe a pragmatic multi-center randomized controlled trial (RCT) study with four parallel study protoco…
