Malaria and schistosomiasis coinfections are common, and chronic schistosomiasis has been implicated in affecting the severity of acute malaria. However, whether it enhances or attenuates malaria has been controversial due the lack of appropriately controlled human studies and relevant animal models. To examine this interaction, we conducted a randomized controlled study using the baboon (Papio anubis) to analyze the effect of chronic schistosomiasis on severe malaria. Two groups of baboons (n = 8 each) and a schistosomiasis control group (n = 3) were infected with 500 Schistosoma mansoni cerc…

BACKGROUND: There are considerable numbers of patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the VL-endemic areas of Bihar, India. These patients are at higher risk of relapse and death, but there are still no evidence-based guidelines on how to treat them. In this study, we report on treatment outcomes of coinfected patients up to 18 months following treatment with a combination regimen.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis included all patients with confirmed HIV-VL coinfection receiving combination treatment for VL at a Médecins Sans Frontièr…

Several researchers have stated that parasites can alter the behavior of their hosts, in order to increase the transmission rate, principally when prey-predator relationships are a reliable way of infection transmission. The aim of this study was to verify the occurrence of changes in anxiety and short-term memory patterns in experimentally infected Mus musculus by Toxocara canis and/or Toxoplasma gondii. Forty male Mus musculus (Balb/c) eight-week-old were divided into four groups of 10 mice each. One group was infected with 300 eggs of Toxocara canis; a second group was submitted to infectio

Infections are a serious complication in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and are an important cause of morbidity and mortality. SLE patients are particularly susceptible to infection due to immune suppression from underlying disease or treatment. Most infections are due to common bacterial organisms. Clinicians also need to be aware of the possibility of polymicrobial infections as these may cause diagnostic delay and affect outcomes. We report the case of an intra-cerebral coinfection with Burkholderia pseudomallei and Cryptococcus neoformans in a 34-year-old woman with SLE.…

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with insulin resistance (IR), although mechanisms leading to IR in these patients are not completely understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of interleukin 28B (IL28B) and interleukin 28 receptor alpha (IL28RA) polymorphisms with IR among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/HCV-coinfected patients. We carried out a cross-sectional study on 203 patients. IL28B (rs8099917) and IL28RA (rs10903035) polymorphisms were genotyped by GoldenGate(®) assay. IR was defined as homeostatic model assessment (HOMA) values ≥3.00. Univaria

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: With no report on the overall prevalence and ramifications of hepatitis Delta virus (HDV) infection in the United States for more than two decades, the characteristics of chronic hepatitis B virus (CHB) patients coinfected with HDV, including clinical presentation, rate of hepatitis C virus tri-infection, and HDV viral load, were assessed.
METHODS: At California Pacific Medical Center, a retrospective chart review was conducted on all CHB patients.
RESULTS: Of 1191 CHB patients, 499 had been tested for HDV, with 42 (8%) determined to be coinfected; half of these were als

The interaction estimates from Bhavnani et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2012;176(5):387-395) are used to evaluate evidence for mechanistic interaction between coinfecting pathogens for diarrheal disease. Mechanistic interaction is said to be present if there are individuals for whom the outcome would occur if both of 2 exposures are present but would not occur if 1 or the other of the exposures is absent. In the epidemiologic literature, mechanistic interaction is often conceived of as synergism within Rothman's sufficient-cause framework. Tests for additive interaction are sometimes used to assess su

A 24-year-old man was admitted with a 7-month history of non-productive cough, and recent onset of fever and progressive dyspnea. A chest X-ray film and computed tomography (CT) scan showed bilateral infiltrates that indicated pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). A transbronchial lung biopsy specimen demonstrated Pneumocystis jirovecii infection on Grocott staining, and was positive for acid-fast bacilli without necrotizing granuloma, which indicated coinfection with both Pneumocystis jirovecii and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A test for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection was positive, and h…

As a result of population migration, Chagas disease is no longer limited to the North and South American continents. In HIV-infected patients, chronic infection by Trypanosoma cruzi behaves as an opportunistic infection in severely immunosuppressed patients and is responsible for high morbidity and mortality. Unlike other opportunistic infections, information on the natural history, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of Chagas disease is scarce. Spain has the highest number of cases of Chagas disease outside the North and South American continents, and coinfection with HIV is increasingly pr…

Herpes virus type 2 DNA was detected by PCR in the cerebrospinal fluid in a young woman presenting with headache, stiff neck and pleocytosis, and serological findings consistent with reactivation. Since she was exposed to ticks, Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis were excluded. Further investigation in an ongoing project, using PCR and sequencing of the amplified products, showed the presence of Rickettsia helvetica in the cerebrospinal fluid. The bacteria were also isolated in Vero cell culture, and microimmunofluorescence confirmed the development of antibodies against Rickettsia spp.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that helminth infection exacerbates malaria, but few existing epidemiological studies adequately control for infection heterogeneities and confounding factors. In this study, we investigate spatial and household heterogeneities, predictors, and consequences of Plasmodium species and hookworm coinfection in rural communities in Uganda.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1770 individuals aged 0-88 years in 4 villages. We recorded demographic, socioeconomic, and microgeographic factors during household surveys. We determined malaria p…

Despite being considered an invasive ungulate outside its native range (North Africa), little information exists regarding the role of the aoudad (also called Barbary sheep, Ammotragus lervia) as a pathogen reservoir. Furthermore, in most epidemiological surveys the potential role of coinfections (e.g. a first infection may make the host more immuno-competent or susceptible against a second pathogen) as a risk factor is often neglected. In this study we first performed a serological survey for selected pathogens (Mycobacterium bovis, M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis, Chlamydophila abortus, bov…

Patients coinfected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are less responsive to anti-HCV therapies and are at a higher risk of toxicity than HCV monoinfected patients. HCV viral kinetics is the basis for the study of response to interferon-based therapy and for predicting sustained virological response (SVR). A lack of early virological response (EVR; undetectable HCV RNA or a decrease of >/=2 log(10) from baseline) after 12 weeks of pegylated interferon (peg-IFN) plus ribavirin (RBV) is an equally reliable predictor of lack of SVR in HIV/HCV-coinfected patients
