We investigated the distribution of the collagen band in 33 patients with collagenous colitis to estimate the likelihood of the disease being diagnosed in biopsy specimens from the left side of the colon, such as those obtained using flexible sigmoidoscopy. To be included in this study patients had a subepithelial collagen band greater than or equal to 10 microns, an increase in chronic inflammatory cells in the same specimen, and diarrhoea for which there was no other apparent cause. We report coexistent collagenous colitis and collagenous sprue in a 62-year-old woman with diarrhea. Investigations suggested malabsorption, and small intestinal biopsies demonstrated a flattened mucosa with subepithelial collagen deposition. Colonic biopsies also showed a thickened subepithelial collagen band as well as a striking lamina propria inflammatory cell infiltrate. Collagenic fleece (Tachocomb) was applied to for hemostasis in areas of pancreatectomy and in the retroperitoneum after resection on the left side in 30 patients with necrotising pancreatitis, carcinoma of the pancreas head, and chronic pancreatitis. Diffuse hemorrhages in the pancreatic bed could be stopped by means of collagenic fleece despite disturbance of coagulation without additional surgical measures for controlling hemorrhage. The application of collagenic fleece was not necessary after resection, because of chronic pancreatitis.

We report the cases of two patients with coeliac disease in whom chronic diarrhoea persisted in spite of strict adherence to a gluten free-diet and regression of intestinal villous atrophy. Serum antireticulin antibodies (ARAs) are often present in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis and celiac disease (CD), especially before instituting a gluten-free diet. In 1962, Arnold used injectable Teflon to reintroduce Brünings' technique for rehabilitating the paralysed vocal cord. Although Teflon would not appear to be carcinogenic, the technique is not entirely trouble-free. Injectable collagen as a biological implant seems to be an attractive alternative since it is a component part of the extracellular protein matrix. Intracellular lysis of collagen by macrophages and fibroblasts in liver cirrhosis and during its reverse development has been shown in experiments on mice by electron microscopy and electron histochemistry. Based on the data obtained it is concluded that in the process under consideration, there occur phagocytosis and intracellular resorption of collagen by macrophages and fibroblasts and that intracellular collagen lysis in the cells in question occurs in the presence of active involvement in the process of lysosomal enzymes.

The suppression of collagen production by increasing the cyclic (c) AMP content of cultured cells was examined vis-à-vis the beta-adrenergic system. Histological and chemical studies were carried out on the elastin and collagen content of the normal and the obstructed urinary bladder wall. Endothelial cells provide a continuous nonthrombogenic lining for the vascular tree. Once the endothelium is denuded platelet adhesion and aggregation occur. One postulated mechanism for the nonthrombogenic properties of the endothelial surface is PGI2 production by endothelial cells, which strongly inhibits platelet aggregation. Seventy-one children with the diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (39 cases), dermatomyositis (25 cases), or scleroderma (7 cases) were studied retrospectively. The children with SLE were much sicker than those with the other two diseases and were found to have a poorer prognosis than adults with SLE. In general, the earlier the age of onset, the poorer the prognosis. Early gastrointestinal bleeding, abnormal renal findings, and cardiac abnormalities heralded early death from SLE.
