AIM: Sphincter-saving rectal cancer management affects anorectal function. This study evaluated persisting anorectal dysfunction and its impact on patients' well-being.
METHOD: Seventy-nine patients with a follow-up of 12-37 (median 22) months and 79 age- and sex-matched control subjects completed questionnaires.
RESULTS: The median number of diurnal bowel movements was three in patients and one in controls (P < 0.0001). Nocturnal defaecation occurred in 53% of patients. The median Vaizey score was 8 in patients and 4 in controls (P < 0.0001). Urgency without incontinence was reported by 47%

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess outcomes of ileal pouch-anal anastomosis in obese patients compared with a matched cohort of nonobese patients.
METHODS: A review of all obese patients who underwent ileal pouch-anal anastomosis from 1998 to 2008 was performed. Obesity was defined as body mass index >or=30 kg/m. A matched control group of patients with body mass index within 18.5 to 25 kg/m was created. The enteric nervous system (ENS), which is derived from enteric neural crest cells (ENCCs), represents the neuronal innervation of the intestine. Compromised ENCC migration can lead to Hirschsprung disease, which is characterized by an aganglionic distal bowel. During the craniocaudal migration of ENCCs along the gut, we find that their proliferation is greatest as the ENCC wavefront passes through the ceca, a pair of pouches at the midgut-hindgut junction in avian intestine. Pouchitis is a poorly defined syndrome that is unique to patients with an ileal reservoir. During a prospective follow-up review of 215 patients who underwent ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, pouchitis was diagnosed in 30 patients (14 percent). In this series, they report their long-term experience with orthotopic urinary reconstruction in case of primary- and radiotherapy-treated recurrent gynecological malignancies. OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of urinary diversion for severe pelvic radiation injury on bowel-related quality of life (bQoL).
METHODS: This study was a prospective single-institution cohort survey study of patients undergoing urinary diversion for radiation injury from 2017 to 2024. PURPOSE: Patients with ulcerative colitis, a high-risk group for the development of colon cancer, undergo colonoscopy more frequently than the general population. This increase in endoscopic evaluation also exposes these patients to an increased risk of complications, including iatrogenic perforation. Genitourinary tuberculosis (GUTB) occurs in 15-20% cases of pulmonary tuberculosis with a prevalence of 400 per 100,000 population.
