Socio-ecological predictors of mental health outcomes among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are at increased risk of adverse mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies are warranted that examine socio-ecological factors associated with these outcomes to inform interventions that support healthcare workers during future disease outbreaks. METHODS: We conducted an online cross-sectional study of healthcare workers during May 2020 to assess the socio-ecological predictors of mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic. We assessed factors at four socio-ecological levels: individual (e.g., gender), interpersonal (e.g., social supp

Cancer care barriers and interventions among immigrant workers: an evidence map and practice-oriented review.

BACKGROUND: Immigrant workers represent a distinct oncology equity population because cancer care barriers occur at the intersection of migration status, occupational precarity, language access, fragmented insurance eligibility, legal vulnerability, income loss, and limited paid leave. Oncology literature rarely characterizes immigrant workers as a distinct analytic group. OBJECTIVE: To map direct, partial, and indirect evidence on cancer care barriers and interventions relevant to immigrant workers and translate the findings into evidence-supported implications, evidence-informed adaptations

Communication between health care professionals and deaf patients.

A review of the literature about communication between health care professionals and deaf people demonstrates that a continuum of accuracy in perceptions of deaf people and their communication problems exists in health care settings. The author provides information on deaf culture, history, population size, sign language, and communication needs that is used to evaluate professional journal articles. Examples of research on this topic are presented and the need for further studies and the role of social workers are discussed.

Benefits and challenges of community-based multi-month dispensing of antiretroviral treatment in Zimbabwe: A qualitative study from a cluster randomized trial.

Sub-Saharan Africa carries the highest burden of HIV, with approximately 70% of all people living with HIV (PLWH) globally living in this region. The provision of antiretroviral treatment (ART) significantly affects already overburdened health systems, which need to accommodate large volumes of ART patients while facing a shortage of professional health workers, infrastructure challenges and medical resources. Finding alternative ways to provide routine services to PLWH has become significantly more urgent. Multi-month dispensing (MMD) of ART aims to improve access to treatment for PLWH, while

A process evaluation of Community-led Distribution of HIV self-testing kits in rural communities in Zimbabwe.

Community-led distribution of HIV self-test (HIVST) kits has potential to combine the benefits of community-based HIV testing with the strengths of community-led interventions. We report the process evaluation from the community-led arm of a cluster-randomized trial in rural Zimbabwe comparing community-led versus community-based HIVST distribution where distributors were paid. Twenty communities were supported to design HIVST distribution models that suited their context. We conducted community meetings where we introduced community-led HIVST, including messages on the benefits of viral load

Health workers' perspectives on school-based mass drug administration control programs for soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis in Ogun State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and schistosomiasis (SCH) are among the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), affecting 1.5 billion globally, with a significant burden in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria. These diseases impair health and contribute to socio-economic challenges, especially in children, undermining educational and future economic prospects. The 2030 NTD Roadmap highlights Mass Drug Administration (MDA) as a critical strategy for controlling these NTDs, targeting vulnerable populations like school-age children. Despite some successes, challen

Gerontological social work and cardiac rehabilitation.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a setting in which integrating social work services can benefit older adults. Many cardiac rehabilitation patients endorse symptoms of stress and depression following a cardiac event, impeding their ability to participate fully in cardiac rehabilitation services or recover from a heart attack. Gerontologically trained social workers can improve the care of older adults with heart disease in a variety of ways and this paper discusses the potential roles social workers can play in enhancing care. Two examples demonstrating how community academic partnerships can lead to

Management of return-to-work programs for workers with musculoskeletal disorders: a qualitative study in three Canadian provinces.

In this qualitative research project, researchers in three Canadian provinces explored the perceptions of many different actors involved in return-to-work (RTW) programs for injured workers, studying their views on successful RTW strategies and barriers to/facilitators of the RTW process, then analyzing the underlying dynamics driving their different experiences. Each research team recruited actors in a variety of different workplaces and key informants in the RTW system, and used a combination of in-depth, semi-structured interviews and focus groups to collect data, which were coded using an

The challenges of reshaping disease specific and care oriented community based services towards comprehensive goals: a situation appraisal in the Western Cape Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Similar to other countries in the region, South Africa is currently reorienting a loosely structured and highly diverse community care system that evolved around HIV and TB, into a formalized, comprehensive and integrated primary health care outreach programme, based on community health workers (CHWs). While the difficulties of establishing national CHW programmes are well described, the reshaping of disease specific and care oriented community services, based outside the formal health system, poses particular challenges. This paper is an in-depth case study of the challenges of im…

Post-exposure prophylaxis against Ebola virus disease with experimental antiviral agents: a case-series of health-care workers.

BACKGROUND: Although a few international health-care workers who have assisted in the current Ebola outbreak in west Africa have been medically evacuated for treatment of Ebola virus disease, more commonly they were evacuated after potential accidental exposure to Ebola virus. An urgent need exists for a consensus about the risk assessment of Ebola virus transmission after accidental exposure, and to investigate the use of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Experimental vaccines have occasionally been used for Ebola PEP, but newly developed experimental antiviral agents have potential advantages
