Healthy Aging in Subsidized Housing in the United States: Exploring Older Adults' Views of Service Coordination.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Low-income older adults face many barriers to healthy aging, including housing cost burden. Publicly subsidized rental units for older adults are one affordable housing option; these typically have a service coordinator who helps tenants access community resources. Previous research has indicated that service coordinators can support resident health. However, little is known about older adults' perspectives on service coordination. Our study aimed to explore how older adults living in subsidized housing perceive the relationship between service coordinators and healt…

Sustaining Preparedness in Hospitals.

PURPOSE: The years following the 9/11/2001 terrorists attacks saw a marked increase in community and hospital emergency preparedness, from communications across community networks, development of policies and procedures, to attainment and training in the use of biological warfare resources. Regular drills ensured emergency and health care personnel were trained and prepared to address the next large-scale crisis, especially from terrorist and bioterrorist attacks. This chapter looks at some of the more familiar global health issues over the past two decades and the lessons learned from hospita

John Henryism Active Coping as a Cultural Correlate of Substance Abuse Treatment Participation Among African American Women.

The rates of illicit drug use among African American women are increasing, yet African American women are least likely to participate in treatment for substance use disorders when compared to women of other racial groups. The current study examined family history of substance use, perceived family support, and John Henryism Active Coping (JHAC) as correlates to seeking treatment for substance abuse. The underlying theoretical frame of JHAC (James et al., 1983) suggests that despite limited resources and psychosocial stressors, African Americans believe that hard work and self-determination are

Alzheimer's disease research and development: a call for a new research roadmap.

Epidemiological projections of the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias, the rapidly expanding population over the age of 65, and the enormous societal consequence on health, economics, and community foretell of a looming global public health crisis. Currently available treatments for AD are symptomatic, with modest effect sizes and limited impact on longer term disease outcomes. There have been no newly approved pharmaceutical treatments in the last decade, despite enormous efforts to develop disease-modifying treatments directed at Alzheimer's-associated pathology. An

Repeat users of crisis resolution and home treatment team.

CRHT services have reduced admissions to psychiatric hospitals. Some patients use CRHT services repeatedly. We reviewed the first 30 patients who were repeat users of the CRHT services, Luton, between 1 August 2010 and 31 July 2011. The repeat users were a small group of patients needing disproportionately large amounts of resources from the CRHT service. The factors associated with repeat use of CRHT were past psychiatric admission and the diagnoses of emotionally unstable personality disorder, self-harm behaviour and substance misuse. Identifying the factors leading to repeat CRHT use could

Comparisons of prevention programs for homeless youth.

There are six HIV prevention programs for homeless youth whose efficacy has been or is currently being evaluated: STRIVE, the Community Reinforcement Approach, Strengths-Based Case Management, Ecologically-Based Family Therapy, Street Smart, and AESOP (street outreach access to resources). Programs vary in their underlying framework and theoretical models for understanding homelessness. All programs presume that the youths' families lack the ability to support their adolescent child. Some programs deemphasize family involvement while others focus on rebuilding connections among family members.

Understanding one First Nations community's ways of healing from historical trauma.

OBJECTIVE: First Nations peoples possess a rich history by which they have demonstrated strength and resilience. Colonization functions as cultural trauma that dismantles Indigenous cultural resources, thereby creating and sustaining health disparities, so effective intervention must treat historical/cultural trauma. First Nations communities were healthy and thriving before colonial contact, and these enduring strengths provide the foundation for culturally grounded interventions to restore balance and vitality to daily life in alignment with traditional cultural values. METHOD: Five focus g

HIV treatment support services in Tanzania: a cost and efficiency analysis at facility and community levels.

Differentiated service delivery models provide an opportunity to reduce the cost of HIV treatment while increasing the focus on advanced patients. Also, stable patients who need less attention can visit facilities less frequently, saving time and money and reducing overcrowding. Tanzania needs treatment support services that can improve the quality of life, ensure adherence and result in viral suppression. Treatment support services can be provided through a variety of models, including at the community level, through the facility or through some combination of the two. Understanding the cost

Tracking Microbiome Composition and Stability Across Indian Social Honeybees Foraging in a Homogeneous Mustard Crop Landscape.

Microbial communities are essential for host health and ecosystem stability. However, whether host identity or shared foraging resources shapes microbiome structure among co-occurring species remains poorly understood. We studied bacterial and fungal communities of four Indian honeybee species in a mustard monoculture resource condition, integrating behavioural observation-based pollinator data with microbial co-occurrence networks derived from metabarcoding. Microbiome composition was more strongly associated with host identity rather than with foraging behaviour, bee abundance, or landscape

The Epidemic of Congenital Syphilis in the Indigenous and Rural Populations of South Dakota.

From 2020 to 2023, South Dakota witnessed a substantial increase in cases of congenital syphilis (CS), with the highest rates identified in rural and Native American (NA) communities. Here, we discuss 3 severe cases of CS in premature infants born to NA individuals and communities in South Dakota with poor access to prenatal care. The infants in these 3 cases presented with varying clinical conditions, including respiratory failure, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, severe direct hyperbilirubinemia, feeding intolerance, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Lack of prenatal care and o

Assessing needs and resources for the home visiting system in Alabama: a mixed methods approach.

The purpose of this article is to describe the initial assessment for the development of a home visiting (HV) system in a state with no existing system. We outline a mixed methods process where the quantitative component was used to identify the communities that possess "at-risk" profiles, and the qualitative component explored the resources and gaps in existing HV services. We employed a mixed methods approach, using six categories of indicators from quantitative secondary data sources to identify "at-risk" profiles for Alabama's 67 counties. A weighted score for each indicator was calculated

A Systems Perspective of How Community-Engaged Public Health Addresses Social Determinants of Health: A Case Study of a Population-Based COVID-19 Testing Program.

CONTEXT: Despite the recognition that social determinants of health (SDOH) are key to improving the health of all communities, the causality and specific mechanisms through which SDOH impacts health behaviors and outcomes are often ambiguous. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use systems thinking to document pathways through which SDOH affected health-seeking behaviors and identify how community engagement strategies intervened to address SDOH barriers. DESIGN: We leveraged the case context of a large federal initiative (Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics-Underserved Populations [RADx-U
