Condom Breakage Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men: An In-Depth Investigation Including Men Living With HIV/AIDS.

Correlates of condom breakage (reported by 19% of 398 young black who have sex with men) for anal insertive sex included the following: condoms drying out (P = 0.018), erection loss during application (P = 0.03), and using erection-enhancing drugs (P = 0.003). Breakage was 2.7 times greater for HIV-positive men (P = 0.001). Breakage was associated with testing positive for urethral infections (P = 0.012).

Factors associated with consistent condom use and STIs among foreign female entertainment workers: results from a cross-sectional survey in Singapore.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the prevalence of consistent condom use and laboratory-confirmed STIs among foreign female entertainment workers (FEWs) who engaged in paid or casual sex in Singapore and the factors associated with these characteristics. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey, using time-location sampling, was conducted on 220 FEWs (115 Vietnamese and 105 Thai) in 2015. For multivariable analysis, we used a mixed-effects Poisson regression model with backward stepwise approach to account for clustering by venue and to obtain the adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) of factors associated with

Understanding Consistent Condom Use Among Homeless Men Who Have Sex with Women and Engage in Multiple Sexual Partnerships: A Path Analysis.

Consistent condom use is the main strategy aimed at preventing individuals from acquiring HIV through sexual intercourse. The mechanism of consistent condom use among a high-risk homeless subpopulation-homeless men who have sex with women and also engage in multiple sexual partnerships-remains unclear. This study identified 182 homeless men who engaged in multiple sexual partnerships from a representative sample of homeless men, who self-identified as heterosexual, using meal line services in Downtown Los Angeles' Skid Row area. Information such as participants' condom use psychosocial correla

Correlates of consistent condom use among recently initiated and traditionally circumcised men in the rural areas of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Consistent use of condoms is the most effective method of preventing STIs including HIV. However, recent evidence suggests that limited knowledge about HIV prevention benefits from male circumcision leads to inconsistent condom use among traditionally circumcised men. The aim of this paper is to report on the prevalence of consistent condom use and identify its psychosocial correlates to inform future HIV prevention strategies among traditionally circumcised men in rural areas of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using interviewer administ…

Intimate partner violence and condom use among women: does the information-motivation-behavioral skills model explain sexual risk behavior?

Intimate partner violence (IPV) undermines women's ability to enact safer sex and increases their vulnerability to HIV and other STDs. To better understand the relationship between IPV and sexual risk behavior, we investigated whether the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model differentially predicted risk behavior among women who had and had not recently experienced IPV. Data from 717 women who were recruited from a public health clinic showed that 18% reported IPV by a sexual partner in the past 3 months, 28% in the past year, and 57% lifetime. Women who experienced IPV in the

Predictors of inconsistent condom use among a hard to reach population of young women with multiple sexual partners in peri-urban South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that multiple concurrent sexual partnering may be a key driver of the high HIV prevalence among young women in South Africa. However, little is known about whether and to what extent women who have multiple sexual partners also engage in other high risk sexual behaviors such as inconsistent condom use. And yet, multiple concurrent sexual partnering is of little epidemiological relevance if all partners in these sexual networks use condoms consistently. This study assesses the prevalence of sexual risk behaviors and HIV, and predictors of inconsistent condom use am…

Effect of Sexual Motivation, Benevolence Toward Men, and Sexual Assertiveness on Chinese Women's Relationship Cognitions and Condom Negotiation Under Partner Resistance.

This study examined Chinese women's condom negotiation under men's condom use resistance and how individual difference variables interact with resistance pressure to predict relationship maintenance cognitions and condom negotiation. A total of 208 Chinese women (Mage = 24.1, SD = 3.35) not in a romantic relationship participated in an online experiment in September 2023 and were randomly assigned to a scenario depicting high or low resistance pressure. After reading the scenario, participants reported relationship maintenance cognitions, use of condom negotiation strategies (direct request, w

Disentangling Between- and Within-Person Effects of HIV PrEP and Treatment Attitudes on Condom Use and Bacterial STIs Among Sexual Minority Men.

HIV treatment attitudes and HIV PrEP are associated with sexual behavior that elevates the risk for bacterial STIs (B-STIs) among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM). Using a longitudinal multi-site study (Engage Cohort Study, 2017-2024), we modelled direct and indirect within- and between-person effects of HIV treatment attitudes and PrEP use on condomless anal sex (CAS) and incident B-STIs among 1863 HIV-negative GBM. We modelled up to four years of follow-up visits using multi-level mediation analysis, with CAS as a mediating variable between HIV treatment attitudes and

Condom use prevalence during the COVID-19 pandemic among female sex workers in Dakar, Senegal: a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis.

Literature suggests that individuals may trade off health for income in face of an economic shock. Being in a close contact profession, the livelihoods of sex workers were severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Few studies exist on whether prevalence of better-renumerated condomless sex increased among this population in low and middle-income countries and discuss its implications on HIV/STI transmission, specifically during pandemic situations. We reported cross-sectional condom use prevalence estimates of 600 female sex workers in Dakar, Senegal from data collected before (2015, 2017) a

Predictors of female condom utilisation among women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in Rakai district, Uganda: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The female condom serves as a dual protective device, preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, unintended pregnancies and other sexually transmitted infections (STIS). When it comes to sexual protection and contraception, the female condom is an essential tool for women's empowerment. Females are more susceptible than males to acquiring STIs due to their biological makeup. Females are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse following substance use. The uptake of female condoms has been a significant challenge in Uganda, and their uptake remains low. Limited research exists on the subject…

Forensic Discrimination of condom lubricants using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy in combination with chemometrics- effect of matrices, pre-coital and post-coital conditions.

The escalating rates of rape and sexual assault cases underscore the essential need to analyze associative evidence of sexual assault to ensure justice. The condom, when used during the act of sexual assault/rape, leaves behind traces of lubricant that could be instrumental in establishing the link between the victim and perpetrator. This leading evidence is crucial especially when the traditional DNA analysis is challenging owing to the lack of biological evidence. The present study employs the use of ATR FTIR spectroscopy coupled with the chemometric, to discern the chemical discrimination o

Sensation seeking and alcohol expectancies regarding sexual aggression as moderators of the relationship between alcohol use and coercive condom use resistance intentions.

OBJECTIVE: Despite condoms' effectiveness at preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancy, coercive condom use resistance (CUR; i.e., using coercive tactics to resist condom use with a partner who wants to use one) is relatively common. However, research has not examined how risk factors, including alcohol use, alcohol expectancies related to sexual coercion, and sensation seeking, may interact to predict coercive CUR. The present study used an alcohol administration experiment to assess sensation seeking and alcohol expectancies as moderators of the relationship b…
