Tear Film Osmolarity in Subjects with Acute Allergic Rhinoconjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Acute allergic rhinoconjuctivitis is the most common form of ocular allergies. The pathogenetic mechanisms are based on an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated hypersensitivity reaction. On the other hand, tear osmolarity has been suggested to be an index of ocular surface damage and inflammation. These data were the motive to investigate the levels of tear osmolarity in subjects with acute allergic rhinoconjuctivitis, before and after administration of artificial tears. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-five subjects with acute allergic rhinoconjuctivitis were randomly divided into thre

[Atopic keratoconjunctivitis].

It is useful to define atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) as a non-infectious inflammatory condition of the ocular surface, which is associated with atopy. The pathogenesis of the disorder is not completely understood. The diagnosis is based on the patient's history and the clinical manifestations. Successful management of AKC, which can become a serious condition, requires a multidisciplinary approach that involves prevention, dermatological care and an adequate ophthalmological treatment algorithm.

A comparison of the clinical efficacy of pheniramine maleate/naphazoline hydrochloride ophthalmic solution and olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution in the conjunctival allergen challenge model.

BACKGROUND: The signs and symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include ocular redness and itching. Two treatment options currently indicated for acute ocular allergic reaction are pheniramine maleate 0.3%/naphazoline hydrochloride 0.025% ophthalmic solution, an over-the-counter antihistamine/vasoconstrictor combination; and olopatadine hydrochloride 0.1% ophthalmic solution, a prescription antihistamine/mast cell stabilizer. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to compare, at onset of action, the relative effectiveness of pheniramine/naphazoline and olopatadine, when administered before conjunct

[Environmental exposure chambers (EEC): A novel tool for pathophysiological and pharmaceutical research].

Airborne allergic diseases (allergic asthma, rhinitis and conjunctivitis) have reached epidemic proportions and are a great burden for both society and individuals. Therefore we need to better understand the physiopathological mechanisms and to increase clinical research in these diseases. However, traditional outpatient studies are difficult and have number of limitations, in particular the variability of allergen exposure. Yet allergen provocation tests, especially bronchial challenges in asthma, are excellent tools to measure the efficiency of anti-allergic therapies. Environmental exposure

Prevalence of atopic diseases in Nigerian children with vernal kerato-conjunctivitis.

A descriptive study of 117 cases of vernal kerato-conjunctivitis (VKC), in children below the age of 18 years, newly presenting to 2 hospitals in Ibadan, Nigeria. All the children had a structured questionnaire administered to them which inquired about demographic and clinical, especially history or presence of other atopic diseases amongst other things. Specifically inquired about were asthma, eczema, allergic rhinitis or hay fever, allergic skin rash e.g. scabies, reaction to drugs and others. The children were also examined to confirm or detect the presence of these atopic diseases. The ove

A Modern Approach to Clinical Outcome Assessment in Allergy Management: Advantages of Allergen Exposure Chambers.

Allergic diseases triggered by airborne allergens such as allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis are increasingly prevalent, posing significant challenges for both patients and healthcare systems. Assessing the efficacy of allergen immunotherapy and other anti-allergic treatments requires precise and reproducible methods. Allergen exposure chambers (AECs) have emerged as advanced tools for evaluating clinical outcomes, offering controlled conditions that address many limitations of traditional field-based studies. This review explores the advantages of AECs in allergy management, emphasizing the

Age-stratified comorbidity transitions and interconnected mapping of nine allergic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases are highly prevalent chronic inflammatory conditions. They often co-occur because of shared immunological pathways. However, population-level studies covering a broad range of allergic diseases across the lifespan remain limited. The objective of this study was to examine the age-specific trends in allergic disease prevalence, patterns of multimorbidity, and longitudinal interrelationships among nine allergic conditions using a nationwide cohort. METHODS: We analyzed data from 1,137,861 individuals in the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample C

Do gender and puberty influence allergic diseases?

Differences between biological sex, gender identity, and their impact on health may have significant implications for the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of several diseases, including allergies. Asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR), atopic dermatitis (AD), and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) have different prevalences and different risk factors in infancy. Although boys present allergies more often in childhood, it quickly changes during girls' sexual development, leading to lifelong female predominance of allergic diseases. This can be explained by the influence of sexual hormones, di

Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure score: A Useful Tool for Web-Based Surveys in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis.

The Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM, 0-28 points) is a self-assessed, repeatable measurement tool for measuring atopic dermatitis (AD) severity. How-ever, whether POEM score is influenced by allergic comorbidities and whether POEM's severity banding is applicable in web-based surveys for AD remain unclear. A web-based questionnaire survey was conducted in 329 patients with AD. POEM, self-reported severity of AD, and comorbidity of allergic diseases including asthma, pollen rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and food allergy were assessed. POEM scores were not affected by a history of com

Pollen/TLR4 Innate Immunity Signaling Initiates IL-33/ST2/Th2 Pathways in Allergic Inflammation.

Innate immunity has been extended to respond environmental pathogen other than microbial components. Here we explore a novel pollen/TLR4 innate immunity in allergic inflammation. In experimental allergic conjunctivitis induced by short ragweed (SRW) pollen, typical allergic signs, stimulated IL-33/ST2 signaling and overproduced Th2 cytokine were observed in ocular surface, cervical lymph nodes and isolated CD4+ T cells of BALB/c mice. These clinical, cellular and molecular changes were significantly reduced/eliminated in TLR4 deficient (Tlr4-d) or MyD88 knockout (MyD88-/-) mice. Aqueous SRW ex

Surgical Management of Corneal Sequelae of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic, recurrent, allergic ocular surface disorder affecting children and young adults, particularly in tropical climates. Corneal sequelae such as giant papillae (GP), shield ulcers, limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), and keratoconus (KC) often necessitate surgical intervention when medical therapy is inadequate. This review summarizes the current surgical strategies for managing VKC-related corneal complications and their outcomes. METHODS: comprehensive review of published literature was undertaken using PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar

The Role of In Vivo Confocal Microscopy in Ocular Allergies.

In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a non-invasive imaging technique used to visualize the layers of the cornea and conjunctiva in real time. In patients with atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) and vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC), this technology can be useful in diagnosing and monitoring the disease, as well as evaluating the efficacy of treatments. IVCM can reveal subclinical abnormalities in the corneal and conjunctival epithelium such as inflammatory cell infiltrates and tissue damage, which can provide insight into the pathogenesis of AKC. In AKC, IVCM reveals changes around the conjun
