BACKGROUND: ABO incompatibility is the most common cause of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). We investigated HDFN at our institute and discuss clinical characteristics and considerations during transfusions and laboratory testing.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of newborns with HDFN due to ABO incompatibility over a period of 5 years. BACKGROUND: Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is a congenital hemolytic anemia caused by defects in red blood cell (RBC) membrane proteins leading to premature RBC clearance in the spleen. The presence of RBC autoantibodies has never been extensively investigated in HS.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: RBC antibody-bound immunoglobulin (Ig)G was investigated in 91 consecutive HS patients by mitogen-stimulated direct antiglobulin test (MS-DAT), a sensitive method able to magnify latent RBC antibody autoimmunity and related with hemolytic variables, previous splenectomy, and type of membrane defect.

A quantitative antiglobulin consumption technique was used to measure immunoglobulin G (IgG) present on human granulocytes. Granulocytes from 50 normal subjects had less than 20 X 10(-14) g IgG per cell. OBJECTIVE: We are reporting a case of acquired B phenomenon in a 14 days old pre-term baby presenting with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) where it was detected as an ABO discrepancy.
METHOD: The forward and reverse grouping was done using tube technique as well as column agglutination technique (ABD card and LISS Coombs AHG gel cards, Biorad, Switzerland). The direct antiglobulin test (DAT) was also done on gel card. Further work up was done using acidified (0.1 N HCl) anti-B (pH 6-6.5) polyclonal anti-B (from group A donors) for resolution of ABO discrepancy.

Thirty-one Chinese patients with peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL) were reviewed. Using the modified Japanese Lymphoma Group classification, there were nine (29%) of the pleomorphic type, 16 (52%) immunoblastic lymphadenopathy (IBL)-like, two (7%) T-zone lymphoma, and one (3%) Lennert's lymphoepithelioid type.
