Report of a case and review of the literature: We report the case of a seven-year-old female kabuki patient suffering from severe bilateral deafness related to Mondini dysplasia and ossicular anomalies. A review of the literature in English confirms that hearing loss is a major component of Kabuki Syndrome (KS) with a frequency at around 32%. However the possible mechanisms have not been fully described and hearing loss is often attributed to otitis media, but one reported case had severe ossicular malformations, two had sensorineural deafness and three others had mixed deafness. Our observati

The case of a 1.5 year old girl with clinical traits of craniofacial dysmorphy, hypotonia, polydactyly and moderate mental retardation is presented. Routine cytogenetic study revealed the presence of a large additional chromosomal fragment associated with the nucleolus organizing region on one of chromosomes 13. The banding pattern suggested the additional fragment was a part of the long arm of this chromosome. The set of clinical symptoms was only partly consistent with those characteristic for trisomy 13q2 and 3. Application of the FISH technique with a chromosome 13 specific library enabled

Amniotic band syndrome can lead to a wide spectrum of congenital abnormalities including orofacial and visceral defects. It is associated with malformations in truncal, craniofacial regions and the limbs, whereas it sometimes may imitate some genetic disorders. Here, we present an atypical case mimicking amniotic band syndrome with a facio-upper arm band that was having multiple fetal structural abnormalities including scoliosis, bilateral cleft lip and palate, upper limb abnormality, unilateral anophthalmia with contralateral microphthalmia, left hypertrophic kidney and severe ventriculomegal

Deletion on the short arm of chromosome 18 is an infrequent syndrome and it is characterized by the following features: mental retardation, growth retardation, craniofacial malformations such as large ears, microcephaly, and short neck. The phenotypical spectrum is a wide range of abnormalities including minor congenital abnormalities to holoprosencephaly. We present a case of a 10 year old girl who is found to have a deletion on the short arm of chromosome 18 (18p11.32-p11.21), by conventional cytogenetic analysis and comparative genomic hybridization.

Strabismus, ptosis, lateral canthal dystopia, nasolacrimal obstruction, and cranial nerve palsy were noted preoperatively in 32%, 21%, 14%, 12%, and 9% of 34 patients, respectively, undergoing ophthalmologic evaluation prior to unilateral orbital advancement for plagiocephaly. Thirty-two percent of the patients had normal preoperative ocular and adnexal examination results. Ptosis, strabismus, and amblyopia were frequently acquired postoperative abnormalities in 29%, 18%, and 18% of the patients, respectively. Forty-four percent of the patients had no new abnormalities following craniofacial s

Mutations in a common extracellular domain of fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR)-2 isoforms (type IIIb and IIIc) cause craniosynostosis syndrome and chondrodysplasia syndrome. FGF10, a major ligand for FGFR2-IIIb and FGFR1-IIIb, is a key participant in the epithelial-mesenchymal interactions required for morphogenetic events. FGF10 also regulates preadipocyte differentiation and early chondrogenesis in vitro, suggesting that FGF10-FGFR signaling may be involved in craniofacial skeletogenesis in vivo. To test this hypothesis, we used a tet-on doxycycline-inducible transgenic mouse model (

BACKGROUND: Foxc2 is a member of the winged helix/forkhead (Fox) box family of transcription factors. Loss of function of Foxc2 causes craniofacial abnormalities such as cleft palate and deformed cranial base, but its role during craniofacial development remains to be elucidated.
RESULTS: The contributions of Foxc2-positive and its descendant cells to the craniofacial structure at E18.5 were examined using a tamoxifen-inducible Cre driver mouse (Foxc2-CreERT2) crossed with the R26R-LacZ reporter mouse. Foxc2 expression at E8.5 is restricted to the cranial mesenchyme, contributing to specific …

Carpenter's syndrome or acrocephalopolysyndactyly type II is a rare genetic autosomal recessive disease, with an incidence estimated at 1 per 1 million births. Common findings of a brachydactyly, polysyndactyly, and a trefoil-like skull with extreme brachycephaly due to fusion of the bilateral coronal, sagittal and lambdoid sutures. We report a 12-month-old male who was referred to our care for evaluation of a craniofacial deformity-a trefoil-like skull, flattened and receding forehead, bulging of temporal bones, hypertelorism, exorbitism, and polysyndactyly in the upper and lower limbs and ps

BACKGROUND: Kabuki make-up syndrome (KMS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by distinctive facial features and multiple congenital anomalies. Although the facial phenotype is central to diagnosis, the spectrum of oral and maxillofacial manifestations has not been comprehensively summarized. The aim of this study was to systematically review the craniofacial, oral, and dental features associated with KMS.
METHODS: This systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Searches were conducted in 5 databases supplemented by citation chasing and gray literature, using t

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to detail perioperative ophthalmologic evaluations to characterize functional ocular outcomes after facial bipartition surgery.
METHODS: Patients with hypertelorbitism who underwent facial bipartition surgery were studied specifically for eye motility disorders by separating patients into rare craniofacial clefts (midline and paramedian) (n = 34) and craniofacial dysostosis (Apert, Crouzon, and Pfeiffer) (n = 74). Preoperative and postoperative (12 months) ophthalmologic examinations (with depth perception tests), computed tomography scans, and magnet

Infantile cranial development typically occurs in a predictable sequence of events; however, less is known about how the development occurs in isolated, nonsyndromic congenital craniofacial anomalies. Furthermore, the timing of pediatric cranioplasty has been extrapolated from adult studies. Thus, the management of nonsyndromic congenital craniofacial anomalies presents with unique challenges to the craniofacial surgeon. The authors describe the case of a baby girl who was born with right Tessier 3 cleft, cleft palate, anophthalmos, and severe left craniofacial microsomia with Pruzansky grade

In 2022, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conducted a dietary cumulative risk assessment for active substances of plant protection products on two types of craniofacial alterations: 1) craniofacial alterations due to abnormal skeletal development and 2) head soft tissue alterations and brain neural tube defects. These effects were selected based on developmental biology knowledge and a hypothetical teratogenic process. Cumulative risk assessment was conducted for 14 European populations of women in childbearing age. The dietary cumulative exposure was determined using individual consu

Hallermann-Streiff syndrome and other craniofacial anomalies predispose patients to airway emergencies. Anatomic abnormalities may render both intubation and tracheotomy unusually difficult. It is important for the otolaryngologist to be familiar with the special difficulties and hazards associated with these malformations in order to ensure optimal airway management.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-month-old dog was evaluated because of progressive tetraparesis. The dog had a history of craniofacial trauma at 2 months of age.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Results of a neurologic examination were suggestive of a lesion localized to the medulla. Computed tomography revealed extensive pneumocephalus extending throughout the ventricular system and into the cranial cervical subarachnoid space.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Because of the deterioration in the dog's clinical condition, an emergency bilateral transfrontal craniectomy was performed. A large amount of pyogranulomatous mater
