There is a misalignment between a development community focused on improving the welfare of vulnerable populations and the challenges of addressing widespread illicit drug crop production in drug producing countries. Drawing on the example of Afghanistan, this paper argues that the reasons for the development communities failure to engage is in large part a function of the way that illicit opium poppy and the illicit economy is currently perceived and understood by policy makers, practitioners and scholars. Much of the problem lies with the various statistics used to describe and quantify opiu…

Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) are important pollinators that are widely used for greenhouse crop pollination and are produced annually by commercial breeding facilities. In this study, we used the commercially important bumblebee species Bombus terrestris Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombini) to evaluate the effects of artificial box stocking density on the reproductive performance of newly eclosed females under commercial rearing conditions. Newly eclosed gynes and workers were artificially held in separate wooden boxes at different stocking densities (1 to 150 individuals per box for gynes and

Bacillus species, which are among the most extensively studied and widely used rhizobacteria, have demonstrated potent antagonistic activity against a broad spectrum of phytopathogenic fungi, making them ideal microorganisms for biological control. Phytopathogenic fungi cause severe preharvest and postharvest losses in global crop production, significantly reducing yield and quality. The prolonged and heavy reliance on traditional chemical fungicides has resulted in environmental pollution and poses risks to human health. In this context, Bacillus-based biological control has emerged as an env…

The increased use of agrochemicals to enhance crop production has had detrimental environmental effects including implication in the sharp decline of North American farmland-breeding birds. Here, using a combination of deep shotgun metatranscriptomics and pesticide exposure data, we sought to assess whether exposure to cotton (Gossypium spp.) production had a differential effect on ileum multi-kingdom microbial activity, metabolism, anti-microbial resistance, and virulence factors of sedentary northern mockingbirds (Mimus polyglottos) sampled from two cotton-producing areas (16 birds in total)…

Powdery mildew (PM) caused by Podosphaera xanthii is one of the most important courgette diseases with high yield losses and is currently controlled by fungicides and sulphur applications in conventional and organic production. Plant derived elicitors/inducers of resistance are natural compounds that induce resistance to pathogen attack and promote a faster and/or more robust activation of plant defense responses. Giant knotweed (Reynoutria sachalinensis, RS) extract is a known elicitor of plant defenses but its mode of action remains elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the mecha

Root system development strongly influences nutrient acquisition, yield formation, and these processes are largely influenced by crop management strategies. Meagre information is available on functional traits of roots that regulate nutrient acquisition and productivity of pigeonpea under organic and natural farming systems in semi-arid regions. This study aimed to quantify the spatial and temporal dynamics of root morphological traits, nutrient acquisition and grain yield of pigeonpea under specific crop management strategies. A field experiment was initiated during 2021-22 under a pigeonpea-

Copper (Cu) is a crucial micronutrient essential for the growth and development of plants. Rice exhibits remarkable resistance to Cu deficiency, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, we reveal that the plant's ability to withstand Cu deficiency is orchestrated by a transcription factor known as OsSPL9. We have demonstrated that OsSPL9 functions as a central regulator of Cu homeostasis. Disrupting OsSPL9 through knockout significantly reduced the plant's tolerance to Cu deficiency. As a result, the spl9 mutants exhibited reduced Cu accumulation in their

In 2018, we conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate azole resistance in environmental Aspergillus fumigatus isolates obtained from different agricultural fields in China. Using 63 soil cores, we cultured for azole-resistant A. fumigatus and characterized isolates by their cyp51A gene type, short tandem repeat genotype, and mating type. Of 206 A. fumigatus isolates, 21 (10.2%) were azole resistant. Nineteen of 21 had mutations in their cyp51A gene (5 TR34/L98H, 8 TR34/L98H/S297T/F495I, 6 TR46/Y121F/T289A). Eighteen were cultured from soil samples acquired from strawberry fields, sugges

In Africa, there is dearth of information on antimicrobial use (AMU) in agriculture and food production systems and its consequential resistance in pathogens that affect animal, human and environmental health. Data published between 1980 and 2021 on the magnitude of AMU and AMR in agriculture and food productions systems in Africa were reviewed. Data from 13-27 countries in Africa indicate that 3558-4279 tonnes of antimicrobials were used in animals from 2015 to 2019. Tetracyclines and polypeptides contributed the largest proportion of antimicrobials used. Cattle and poultry production account

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) remains one of the most important staple crops worldwide and serves as a primary source of calories and protein for billions of people. Global wheat production, however, continues to be threatened by rust diseases caused by Puccinia triticina, Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici and Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici. These pathogens are highly adaptive and frequently give rise to new virulent races, causing resistance in wheat cultivars to breakdown. Under favorable environmental conditions, severe epidemics can develop and substantial yield losses may occur. In res

The study of gluten intolerance is a modern area of medical science. With the advent of new diagnostic capabilities and data on the forms of the disease, wide opportunities have opened up in optimizing the timing and invasiveness reducing of intervention during diagnosis and further monitoring of the child's health. However, despite all efforts, the basic method of treating all forms of gluten intolerance remains strict adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). It is known that GFD itself, as well as low adherence to its observance can lead to nutritional disorders. Therefore, the expansion of th

Fusarium root rot, a persistent soil-borne disease, poses a serious threat to crop production, quality, and ultimately to food security. We identified two double-stranded RNA viruses co-infecting the phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum strain 3 S-18: Fusarium oxysporum partitivirus 1 isolate 3 S-18 (FoPV1/3S18) and Fusarium oxysporum virus 1 (FoV1). The genome of FoPV1/3S18 consists of two segments. dsRNA1 is 1,761 nt in length with a large open reading frame (ORF) encoding an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of 539 amino acids (aa). dsRNA2 is 1,556 nt in length with an ORF encoding a…

The escalation of the global population has accelerated the demand for sustainable energy sources such as bioethanol. Traditionally, bioethanol was obtained by the fermentation of sugar from agricultural crops and grains. However, this technique creates serious threats on the global food supplies, thus hindering the commercial production of bioethanol. Therefore, there is a need to develop new technologies and low-cost raw materials in order to ensure that bioethanol is economically comparable to the first generation of bioethanol. Solid-state fermentation (SSF) has been in the limelight withi

Improving poultry production, increasing poultry immunity, and reducing the disease spreading can be achieved by adding various potentially valuable ingredients to the feed or drinking water of poultry flocks. Because of the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in animal nutrition were prohibited. Additionally, consumer preferences tend towards purchasing products from livestock raised without antibiotics. Therefore, there is a critical need to find effective growth promoter alternatives and treatment methods for common poultry diseases. Some spice plants pl

Datura species are well known because of their high concentration of tropane alkaloids, which has led to poisoning episodes when Datura is accidentally mixed with edible crops. Therefore, the European Union has set a maximum level in cereal-based infant food products of 1 µg kg-1 for atropine and scopolamine. However, the occurrence of these compounds in other commodities has become a global concern. Spinach and derived products can be contaminated with Datura innoxia leaves. In this study, we tested frozen spinachs and spinach-based infant food products. The determination was carried out by U

The consumption of rice has become a global food safety issue because rice paddies support the production of high levels of the potent neurotoxin, methylmercury. The production of methylmercury is carried out by chemotrophic anaerobes that rely on a diversity of terminal electron acceptors, namely sulphate. Sulphur can be a limiting nutrient in rice paddies, and sulphate amendments are often used to stimulate crop production, which can increase methylmercury production. Mercury (Hg) redox cycling can affect Hg methylation by controlling the delivery of inorganic Hg substrates to methylators in…

Copper (Cu) contamination poses severe threats to agricultural productivity and food safety, particularly affecting economically important crops such as rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). This study investigated the protective effects of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) against Cu toxicity in four B. napus cultivars. Exposure to Cu (200 μM) caused severe reductions in growth and photosynthetic efficiency while significantly elevating oxidative stress markers across all cultivars. Application of SeNPs (25 μM) effectively mitigated these adverse effects, improving biomass, restoring chlorophyll content
