Bladder pain syndrome--formally known as interstitial cystitis--is a chronic bladder disorder characterized by pelvic pain and urinary irritability symptoms. The physiopathology is still unclear but is thought to involve bladder mucosal injury, inflammation and neurologic dysfunction. Emphysematous cystitis is a relatively rare clinical entity caused by gas-fermenting bacteria or fungus. Presentation is often nonspecific and imaging is the best diagnostic modality. We report a case of a 45-year-old male who presented with fever, dysuria, and pneumaturia, and was found to have emphysematous cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: We report our own experience with the use of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) for the management of postradiation hemorrhagic cystitis.
METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively 14 patients from 2001 to 2007 with different pelvic organ malignancies who developed radiation cystitis after irradiation. A dog presented with hematuria, and two small polypoid masses were detected in the urinary bladder. Histopathologically, the masses were located in the mucosal or submucosal layer. Lupus cystitis is a rare manifestation in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); it usually occurs in association with gastrointestinal manifestations. We report two cases of lupus cystitis without bladder irritation symptoms. Both cases developed severe abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea and showed no bladder irritation symptoms. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of pelvic floor dysfunction in women with interstitial cystitis (IC).
METHODS: Women with IC and pelvic pain were referred to the Beaumont Women's Initiative for Pelvic Pain and Sexual Health program. A comprehensive patient history and pelvic examination were completed by a certified women's health nurse practitioner.

Current evidence from clinical and laboratory studies confirms that mast cells play a central role in the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of interstitial cystitis (IC). In this article, we focus on the role of the mast cell in IC and examine the ways in which mast cells and other pathophysiologic mechanisms are interrelated in this disease. Identifying the patients with IC who have mast cell proliferation and activation will enable us to address this aspect of disease pathophysiology in these individuals with targeted pharmacotherapy to inhibit mast cell activation and mediator release.
