Various conditions such as inflammation, malignancy, surgical manipulations, and radiation therapy can lead to the development of urinary bladder fistulae. Although many of these fistulae are suspected clinically, imaging plays a major role in confirmation and planning of subsequent treatment. Computed tomography (CT) cystoscopy provides useful details regarding the fistulous track and the anatomy of the region. This article aims to provide a succinct review of bladder fistulae and the role of CT cystography in their management.

Two tumorlike forms of urinary schistosomiasis are reported. Diagnosis was suspected as the patients exerted haematuria while they originated from a geographic area where schistosomiasis is endemic. Terminal urine samples were positive for Schistosoma haematobium. Cystoscopy revealed an hemorrhagic granulomatous polyp in one case and villous polyps in the other case, associated with suggestive lesions of schistosomiasis. Schistosoma haematobium infection in children is uncommon in Europe and rarely considered in the diagnosis of haematuria.

A 59-year-old man presented with lower abdominal pain. Plain X-ray of the urinary tract revealed radio-opaque shadows in the suprapubic region. Cystogram and intravenous urography showed these shadows in relation to the anterior part of the bladder. On cystoscopy, a small opening leading to a sac was seen. This was excised and stones were retrieved. The histology of the excised mucosa confirmed inflamed urachus. Four years later the patient remains asymptomatic.

We report on a woman who presented with urinary incontinence, covered exstrophy and an abdominal mass. Radiographic studies and cystoscopy confirmed that the anterior abdominal mass did not communicate with the bladder or colon and that the gastrointestinal tract was normal. Subsequent surgical resection of the mass and Young-Dees-Leadbetter bladder neck reconstruction were performed. Histological examination of the mass revealed colonic mucosa. The etiology of the covered exstrophy and sequestered colonic remnant is discussed.

In Italy, imported cases of urinary schistosomiasis may be frequently undiagnosed, because the symptoms are mild and the number of schistosome eggs in urine is low. The Authors report one case of S. haematobium infection in whom the diagnosis was suspected on the basis of the anamnestic and clinical data and confirmed by the presence of typical eggs in urine and histologically in biopsies taken at cystoscopy. Moreover preventive measures are suggested for the individuals who go to those Countries where schistosomiasis is endemic.
