Atopic dermatitis has a substantial impact on sleep, appearance, psychological well-being, and other qualities of life. The visual appearance of lichenification, cheilitis, hyperpigmentation, ichthyosis, and erythema can be socially stigmatizing, and treatment of these symptoms is challenging. In managing pruritus in patients, practitioners should assess and document pruritus through questionnaires at each routine visit. Initially, practitioners should advise patients to employ nonpharmaceutical treatments such as emollients with wet wraps, elimination of triggers, changing scratching habits, …

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease clinically characterized by eczematous skin manifestations. Sometimes, it can manifest with non-specific clinical features, which are common with other skin conditions, such as infectious and neoplastic diseases. We would like to underline the importance of accurate dermatologic examination and rigorous anamnesis in patients affected by AD to avoid misdiagnosis and delayed treatments.

Primula obconica, a household plant originally found in China that was introduced in Europe in the 1880s, has been reported to cause plant-induced contact dermatitis (CD). The condition more commonly is reported in Europe and less frequently in the United States, where the plant is not commonly included in patch testing protocols. Clinical features of P obconica CD can include facial and hand as well as fingertip dermatitis. The main allergens known to cause these findings are primin and miconidin. Treatment of P obconica CD mainly involves avoiding contact with the plant and applying a topica…

About 20 years after its first description, Annular Lichenoid Dermatitis of Youth (ALDY) is recognized as a distinctive lichenoid dermatosis with specific clinical and histological features. The disease occurs mostly in young persons all over the world, runs a chronic course, and has an obscure etiopathogenesis. Clinically, lesions consist of persistent, asymptomatic erythematous macules and round-oval annular patches with a red-violaceous non-scaling border and central hypopigmentation, mostly localized on the groin and flanks. Histology shows a peculiar lichenoid dermatitis characterized by …

Contact dermatitis is a common disease that is caused by repeated skin contact with contact allergens or irritants, resulting in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and/or irritant contact dermatitis. Attempts have been made to identify biomarkers to distinguish irritant and allergic patch test reactions, which could aid diagnosis. Some promising candidates have recently been identified, but verification and validation in clinical cases still need to be done. New causes of ACD are constantly being recognized. In this review, 10 new contact allergens from recent years, several relating to anti-ag…

Frequent allergens are known, but not whether allergens are enantiomer specific. Chemicals were tested on guinea pigs and humans to answer this question. Frullanoides showed evident allergic enantiospecificity, whereas the conclusion was shaded for α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone. A link between this chemical and chronic actinic dermatitis was proposed. No clear tendency to enantio-stereospecificity in inducing allergic contact dermatitis was ascertained. Future studies using contemporary analytical chemistry and new immunologic knowledge have to be undertaken to provide clearer mechanistic insigh…

Dermatitis encompasses a spectrum of inflammatory skin disorders with aberrant immune responses classified as type 1, type 2, and/or type 3. Major advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD) have shed new light on how innate immune responses critically regulate type 2 inflammation and itch. This article highlights the diverse ways by which type 2 immune cells regulate diseases beyond AD. The discovery of human Mas-related G protein-coupled receptor X2 on mast cells has revealed novel T cell-independent and immunoglobulin E-independent mechanisms of allergic cont…

CASE REPORT: Quincke sign manifested on the wrist of a young healthy man. The patient had self-treated with topical antibiotics and steroids for a second-degree burn, but then developed contact dermatitis followed by cellulitis. He presented to the emergency department with a "blinking" effect of the skin lesion.
CONCLUSION: The "blinking" effect is the result of focal subcutaneous arterial dilatation in the zone of subcutaneous inflammation.

Exfoliative dermatitis (ED) or erythroderma is defined as diffuse erythema and scaling of the skin involving more than 90% of the total body skin surface, which can be caused by variety of systemic and cutaneous diseases, such as infection, including dermatophytosis. Dermatophytosis is a superficial fungal infection of keratinized tissue caused by dermatophytes. There are only few case reports of ED due to dermatophytosis in literature. A 39-year-old male present with history of diffuse erythematous macules and scales almost on entire body due to dermatophytosis was reported. The diagnosis of …

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases leading to pruritic skin lesions. A subset of AD patients exhibits a disseminated severe HSV infection called eczema herpeticum (EH) that can cause life-threatening complications. This review gives an overview of the clinical picture, and characteristics of the patients as well as the diagnosis and therapy of EH. A special focus lies on the pathophysiological hallmarks identified so far that predispose for EH. This aspect covers genetic aberrations, immunological changes, and environmental influences displaying…

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease that may be associated with a number of comorbidities including psychosocial disorders, which are the primary focus of this article. The data presented is based on a literature search in PubMed and subsequent screening of relevant review articles and guidelines. There is a greater prevalence of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and suicidal ideation among individuals with AD. The disease negatively impacts patients' quality of life. Children with AD have been shown to more commonly exhibit signs of attention-deficit/hyperactivity diso…
