The exact pathophysiology and curative treatment of many common dermatologic conditions remain unclear. Often conventional treatments are only partially effective, leading patients to look for alternative treatments. Rosacea may be helped by azelaic acid. Seborrheic dermatitis may be helped by tea tree oil. Chronic urticaria may be helped by a focused dietary history and elimination of food additives and salicylates. Although various alternative treatments have been touted as useful in herpes simplex, few have proved efficacious.

We examined a 6-year-old boy with seborrheic dermatitis like redness of the face, scaling of the scalp, and palmoplantar keratoderma. Skin biopsy showed hyperkeratosis, parakeratosis, follicular plugging, and mild upper dermal perifollicular mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate, which are compatible with the diagnosis of pityriasis rubra pilaris. Immunologic studies revealed normal values of peripheral B and T lymphocytes. The spontaneous activity of T suppressor cells was activated and the function of T helper cells was impaired, however.

Calcipotriol (calcipotriene) is a synthetic vitamin D3 derivative that is a standard treatment option for psoriasis. It is generally well tolerated with minimal side effects. Due to its ability to reduce keratinocyte proliferation and induce keratinocyte differentiation as well as its immunomodulatory effects, calcipotriol has been used to treat a variety of skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis, actinic keratoses, lichen planus, seborrheic keratoses, and vitiligo [1]. Description Inverse psoriasis is a clinical variant of psoriasis involving flexural or intertriginous areas of the body. Inverse psoriasis may be present in 3 to 36% of psoriasis patients. Lesions are clinically characterized as smooth, well-demarcated, erythematous plaques (raised, >1 cm) without the typical silvery scales of classic psoriasis. Differential diagnosis includes tinea infection, candidiasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or bacterial streptococcal infection. The clinical images in this review focus on identifying inverse psoriasis along the full spectrum of skin tones.

Hamycin activity (in vitro) against Malassezia ovale was studied and compared with old and newly discovered polyene antifungal antibiotics. Hamycin showed a marked anti-M. ovale activity which was enhanced in the presence of divalent cations like Cu++ and Zn++. Furthermore, the absorption of hamycin onto the cell membrane or cell surface of M. ovale was also increased in the presence of divalent cations. It is suggested that hamycin alone or along with metal ions, specifically Cu++ may be useful clinically in the treatment of dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.

A 73-year-old patient, diagnosed as having seborrheic dermatitis, was patch tested with his hair preparations. The hair stick gave a positive reaction. Among its ingredients, D & C Yellow No. 11, from 0.0001% to 0.1%, and perfume showed positive reactions. D & C Yellow No. 11 was found to consist only of quinophthalone by chemical analyses. The concentration of quinophthalone in the hair stick was determined as 9.41 ppm w/w by high-performance liquid chromatography.
