Biliary cholesterol saturation and weight reduction--effects of fasting and low calorie diet.

The effects of fasting or a 600-cal diet on biliary lipid composition were studied in 20 persons with overweight. With complete fasting for 20 days and a mean weight loss of 650 g/day, biliary cholesterol fell significantly from 10.1 to 6.9 mol% and the 'lithogenic index' from 1.0 to 0.7. Following fasting, the index, in 10 of the 11 patients, was in the normal range below 1.0. With a 600-cal diet, in agreement with findings by other authors, there was no significant change of individual bile lipids or of the lithogenic index. While it has been shown that lithogenicity increases up to 16 h of

Effect of carbohydrate restriction in obese diabetics: relationship of control to weight loss.

Two hundred newly diagnosed, fat diabetics were studied to determine whether control of the diabetes depended on loss of weight or on carbohydrate restriction alone. Satisfactory control was achieved by dietary treatment alone in 159 patients 30 required oral hypoglycaemic drugs and 11 were 18 of whom had actually gained weight. Of the remaining patients, 30 required oral hypoglycaemic drugs and 11 were still uncontrolled but not yet on other treatment. The mean initial excess weight of all 200 patients was 28%. Of those who remained uncontrolled on diet alone the mean initial excess weight (31

Effectiveness of Whey Protein Supplementation in Weight Loss Interventions for Patients with Obesity: A Systematic Review.

Background: Obesity is traditionally defined by excess fat mass; however, the preservation of fat-free mass (FFM), particularly skeletal muscle, has gained increasing relevance due to its metabolic, endocrine, and functional roles. Weight loss interventions, including hypocaloric diets, pharmacological treatments, and bariatric surgery, are frequently associated with unintended loss of skeletal mass, increasing the risk of sarcopenic obesity and related complications. Objective: This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effectiveness of whey protein supplementation in preserving fat-free

Effect of weight loss through dietary interventions on cardiometabolic health in older adults.

BACKGROUND: With the increasing prevalence of obesity and its negative consequences on health, weight management emerges as a priority for public health, especially in older adults, in whom obesity is linked to increased risks of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease. We performed a study investigating the association of intentional weight loss through dietary intervention on cardiometabolic health among older adults participating in the MIND trial. METHODS: The MIND trial enrolled overweight individuals aged 65-84 who self-reported a suboptimal diet. Participants were randomized to

Weight Loss for Patients With Gout and Concomitant Obesity: A Proof-of-Concept Randomized Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Despite scarce evidence, guidelines recommend weight loss as a management strategy for patients with gout. We investigated the effect of an intensive dietary intervention on body weight and clinical measures of gout severity in individuals with obesity and gout. METHODS: We conducted a 16-week randomized nonmasked parallel-group trial in Denmark, randomly assigning (one-to-one) individuals with obesity and gout to a low-energy diet or a control diet. The primary outcome was change in body weight. Key secondary outcomes were changes in serum urate (SU) level and visual analog scale-

Effect of progressive resistance training with weight loss compared with weight loss alone on the fatty liver index in older adults with type 2 diabetes: secondary analysis of a 12-month randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is highly prevalent (~75%) in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Since exercise and weight loss (WL) are recommended for the management of both NAFLD and T2D, this study examined whether progressive resistance training (PRT) plus WL could lead to greater improvements in the fatty liver index (FLI), an indicator of NAFLD, compared with WL alone in older adults with T2D. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study represents a secondary analysis of a 12-month, two-arm randomised controlled trial including 36 overweight and obese adults (60-80

PPAR-γ-induced changes in visceral fat and adiponectin levels are associated with improvement of steatohepatitis in patients with NASH.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ agonists decrease hepatic/visceral fat (VF) and improve necroinflammation despite subcutaneous (SC) fat weight-gain. Understanding the impact of changes in VF, VF-to-SC fat distribution (VF/SC) and adiponectin (ADPN) levels in relation to histological improvement after weight-loss or pioglitazone is relevant as novel PPAR-γ agonists are being developed for treating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). METHODS: Fifty-five patients with NASH received a -500 kcal/d hypocaloric diet and were randomized (double-blind) to pio

Haptoglobin phenotype influences the effectiveness of diet-induced weight loss in middle-age abdominally obese women with metabolic abnormalities.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Haptoglobin (Hp) is associated with risks of obesity and cardiometabolic dysfunction; however, the role of the Hp phenotype in diet-induced weight loss remains to be elucidated. This study investigated whether the Hp phenotype contributes to inter-individual variations in body weight reduction as well as changes in the metabolic profile. METHODS: Secondary data analysis from a randomized controlled trial. In total, 151 abdominally obese Taiwanese women with ≥2 metabolic components were randomized to each of four dietary programs [calorie restriction (CR), calorie restrictio

Impact of intermittent fasting on glucose homeostasis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article provides an overview of the most recent human trials that have examined the impact of intermittent fasting on glucose homeostasis. RECENT FINDINGS: Our literature search retrieved one human trial of alternate day fasting, and three trials of Ramadan fasting published in the past 12 months. Current evidence suggests that 8 weeks of alternate day fasting that produces mild weight loss (4% from baseline) has no effect on glucose homeostasis. As for Ramadan fasting, decreases in fasting glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance have been noted after 4 weeks in healt

An examination of participants who develop an eating disorder despite completing an eating disorder prevention program: implications for improving the yield of prevention efforts.

Numerous trials provide support for the Body Project, an eating disorder prevention program wherein young women with body image concerns critique the thin ideal. Despite medium to large effects, some participants subsequently develop an eating disorder, suggesting that intervention or recruitment procedures could be improved. This study investigated baseline and acute intervention predictors of DSM-5 eating disorder development during a 3-year follow-up among Body Project participants. Combined data from two trials compare participants who experienced eating disorder onset during follow-up (n

Do intermittent diets provide physiological benefits over continuous diets for weight loss? A systematic review of clinical trials.

Energy restriction induces physiological effects that hinder further weight loss. Thus, deliberate periods of energy balance during weight loss interventions may attenuate these adaptive responses to energy restriction and thereby increase the efficiency of weight loss (i.e. the amount of weight or fat lost per unit of energy deficit). To address this possibility, we systematically searched MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE, PubMed and Cinahl and reviewed adaptive responses to energy restriction in 40 publications involving humans of any age or body mass index that had undergone a diet involving intermitten

The effects of weight loss and salt reduction on visit-to-visit blood pressure variability: results from a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: As evidence suggests visit-to-visit variability (VVV) of blood pressure (BP) is associated with cardiovascular events and mortality, there is increasing interest in identifying interventions that reduce VVV of BP. We investigated the effects of weight loss and sodium reduction, alone or in combination, on VVV of BP in participants enrolled in phase II of the Trials of Hypertension Prevention. METHODS: BP readings were taken at 6-month intervals for 36 months in 1820 participants with high-normal DBP who were randomized to weight loss, sodium reduction, combination (weight loss and
