Nutritional Intakes of People With Spinal Cord Injury Who Have Pressure Injuries in Hospital: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: People living with spinal cord injury (SCI) have one of the highest rates of pressure injury prevalence globally, yet the nutrition-related characteristics of this group are inadequately described. OBJECTIVES: This secondary analysis aimed to explore the nutritional status, dietary intakes, and healing outcomes of people with SCI who have pressure injuries in hospital. METHODS: Participant demographics, pressure injury-related information, anthropometry, nutritional status (subjective global assessment), and nutrition interventions were recorded. Assessments of energy and protein

Determinants of completion and early dropout in an adult weight management service: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: High attrition rates in weight management interventions (WMIs) undermine their effectiveness but are poorly understood. This study aimed to identify determinants of completion and early dropout in National Health Service (NHS) WMIs. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 329 patients recruited at initial consultation appointments satisfied the eligibility criteria: age ≥18 years and body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 . Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the odds ratios (OR, given with 95% confidence interval) of completion and early dropou

Spinal muscular atrophy and anorexia nervosa: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive condition affecting lower motor neurons causing progressive muscle atrophy. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric disorder characterised by intense fear of weight gain, restriction of energy intake, and preoccupation with body weight and shape. Low weight, gastrointestinal dysmotility, and respiratory infections are common in SMA but may mask AN. No paediatric cases of AN in SMA have been reported to date. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old female with SMA2 presented with 12 months of declining body weight to a nadir of 24.8 k

Prevalence of and risk factors for nutritional deficiency and food allergy in a cohort of 21 patients with Netherton syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Netherton syndrome (NS; OMIM: 256500) is a rare autosomal recessively inherited disease due to SPINK5 mutations. Hair and inflammatory skin involvement are variable along with allergies. Morbidity and mortality are high, particularly in infancy. A detailed clinical analysis of a NS patient cohort should broaden the understanding of nutritional challenges and allergic comorbidities. METHODS: In this retrospective monocentric cohort study, medical and dietetic records of pediatric NS patients, presenting between 1999 and 2018, were reviewed. The severity of skin involvement was asse

Red wine but not alcohol consumption improves cardiovascular function and oxidative stress of the hypertensive-SHR and diabetic-STZ rats.

AIMS: This raised the issue of whether in vivo long-term red wine treatment can act as a modulator of these targets. MAIN METHODS: We monitored SBP, glucose tolerance, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular function. Aortic and atrial tissues from normotensive-WKY, hypertensive-SHR, and diabetic-STZ animals, chronically exposed to red wine (3.715 ml/kg/v.o/day) or alcohol (12%) for 21-days, were used to measure contractile/relaxation responses by force transducers. Key findings: red wine, but not alcohol, prevented the increase of SBP and hyperglycemic peak. Additionally, was observed preventio

Investigating the dietary knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of Australian patients with cancer.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence linking diet to the risk of developing cancer and preventing recurrence, but the therapeutic value of food in treating cancer remains unclear. Therefore, guidelines for well-nourished patients with cancer are based on general healthy eating recommendations. This study aims to describe patients' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs towards the role of diet and cancer. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken between July 2016 and January 2017. Patients being reviewed by Medical Oncology at a tertiary cancer service were invited to complete a questionnaire. R

Perioperative nutrition assessment in musculoskeletal trauma patients: Dietitian evaluation is superior to serum chemistries or modified screening questionnaire for risk stratification.

INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition is a potentially modifiable risk factor associated with increased hospital charges, major wound complication, and fracture non-union after orthopaedic surgery. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between three nutrition screening tools and postoperative complications in patients undergoing acute fracture fixation. METHODS: Patients aged 18 or older undergoing acute operative fracture fixation at a Level I academic trauma center were screened upon admission using a malnutrition screening questionnaire (MSQ), and classified as low-, moderate- or hig

Application of a pattern of incremental haemodialysis, based on residual renal function, when starting renal replacement therapy.

INTRODUCTION: The interest in the preservation of residual kidney function on starting renal replacement therapy (RRT) is very common in techniques such as peritoneal dialysis but less so in haemodialysis (HD). In our centre the pattern of incremental dialysis (2 HD/week) has been an option for a group of patients. Here we share our experience with this regimen from March 2008. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included incident patients with residual diuresis >1,000ml/24h, clinical stability, absence of oedema, absence of hyperkalaemia >6.5 mEq/l and phosphoremia >6mg/dl, with acceptable comprehensio

Acute dietary tryptophan manipulation differentially alters social behavior, brain serotonin and plasma corticosterone in three inbred mouse strains.

Clinical evidence indicates brain serotonin (5-HT) stores and neurotransmission may be inadequate in subpopulations of individuals with autism, and this may contribute to characteristically impaired social behaviors. Findings that depletion of the 5-HT precursor tryptophan (TRP) worsens autism symptoms support this hypothesis. Yet dietetic studies show and parents report that many children with autism consume less TRP than peers. To measure the impact of dietary TRP content on social behavior, we administered either diets devoid of TRP, with standard TRP (0.2 g%), or with 1% added TRP (1.2 g%)

Can a Mediterranean diet reduce the effects of lipodystrophy syndrome in people living with HIV? A pilot randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: HIV and highly active antiretroviral therapies have been associated with changes in individuals' lipid profiles and fat distribution (lipodystrophy). A pilot study was conducted for a randomised controlled trial to evaluate whether lipodystrophy in HIV patients can be controlled by adopting the low-fat and low-cholesterol diet or the modified Mediterranean diet. METHODS: Forty-eight HIV patients were randomised into two diet groups. Thirty-six (75%) completed the 1-year pilot study with regular dietetic consultations, during which time lipid levels, weight, body mass index and fat

[Nutritional evaluation, micronutrient deficiencies and anemia among female adolescents in an urban and a rural zone from Zulia state, Venezuela].

Female adolescents in reproductive age are a susceptible group to anemia and micronutrient deficiencies. The objective of this study was to know the nutritional, anthropometric and dietetic status, the prevalence of anemia, depletion of iron deposits (FeD) and Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) in female adolescents. Seventy-eight not pregnant female adolescents (15.9 +/- 1.1 years old), from an urban and a periurban zone of Maracaibo, and a rural zone near this city, without infectious and inflammatory processes, were analyzed. Anemia in adolescents was considered when Hb < 120 g/L; FeD: ferritin < 1

Hurdles at work: perceptions of hospital food handlers.

BACKGROUND: Food handlers have a very important role in preventing food contamination during its preparation and distribution. This responsibility is even greater in hospitals, since a large number of patients have low immunity and consequently food contamination by pathogenic bacteria could be particularly harmful. Therefore, a good working environment and periodic training should be provided to food handlers by upper management. METHODS: This study is qualitative research by means of focus group and thematic content analysis methodologies to examine, in detail, the statements by food handle

Allergen avoidance in infancy and allergy at 4 years of age.

In an attempt to prevent or reduce the manifestations of atopic disease, a group of infants considered to be genetically at high risk of atopy was entered in a prenatally randomized, controlled study. A prophylactic group (n = 58) was either breast-fed with their mothers excluding foods regarded as highly antigenic from their diets, or given an extensively hydrolysed formula. In addition, strenuous efforts were made to reduce exposure to the house-dust mite by application of acaricide to the bedroom and living room carpets and upholstered furniture. A control group (n = 62) was fed conventiona

"Life after treatment": what physicians consider important for oral cancer survivors' quality of life.

INTRODUCTION: Oral cancer remains a major public health concern in India, particularly in Maharashtra, where tobacco and areca-nut use, delayed diagnosis, and socioeconomic constraints contribute to high morbidity and poor survivorship outcomes. Post-treatment challenges-including impairments in mastication, swallowing, speech, appearance, emotional wellbeing, and financial stability-profoundly shape survivors' quality of life (QOL). Physicians' perspectives are central to survivorship planning, yet remain understudied in low-resource, high-burden settings. METHODS: This qualitative study exp

Understanding the eating and dietary experiences of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) survivors: A photovoice-informed qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Eating difficulties following nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treatment can persist into survivorship and reshape everyday dietary practices, family relationships, and social participation. Although previous studies have documented treatment-related symptoms, less is known about how survivors actively manage eating within their everyday lives. This study aimed to explore how NPC survivors experienced and negotiated changes in eating and diet after treatment. METHODS: A photovoice-informed qualitative design was used. Fourteen adult NPC survivors who had completed primary anticancer tr
