The sphinctero-myectomy as a surgical treatment of megarectum has been generally advocated, but its results are not always satisfactory. In this paper, a new surgical treatment will be presented. Ten cases with idiopathic chronic constipation presenting megarectum in barium enema underwent this operation. After anal dilatation, incision was made in width of 2 cm at 6 o'clock on the dentate line. The blunt split between internal and external sphincter muscles was advanced to 6 cm orally. The histology obtained from 1256 female patients undergoing breast surgery was reviewed. Mammary duct ectasia was noted in 51 (4.2%) patients who had associated symptoms and in 103 (8.1%) patients where duct ectasia was recognized as an incidental finding. Real-time renal ultrasonographic scans were obtained of 204 subjects, comprising 159 pregnant and 45 control subjects. A classification of hydronephrosis based on calyceal diameters was established, and the overall incidence of hydronephrosis was found to be 90% on the right side and 67% on the left side. Calyceal diameters for both kidneys were found to increase gradually throughout pregnancy, the right more rapidly than the left. Neither parity nor a history of urinary tract problems was found to be relevant to the degree of dilatation.

Three cases of lateral neck tumors caused by thrombosis of the external jugular vein have been presented. Microscopic examination of the excised thrombosed veins revealed all of them to have a dilated architecture with somewhat degenerated vessel walls much like an aneurysm. Such a dilatation would cause some stasis and eddy currents and make the vessels more susceptible to thrombus formation. The final factor which induced these thrombi remains unknown. The authors report a case in which slight cranial trauma was followed by manifestations of damage to the right ciliary ganglion. After 3 weeks the signs of damage began to regress and disappeared completely. Laboratory investigations failed to demonstrate any abnormalities. Apart from this trauma there were no other detectable causes, and especially there were no history data suggesting past infection, botulism or syphilis. The mechanism of ciliary ganglion injury is not known (contusion, haematoma, oedema etc.).
