Combining a generic QuEChUP sample preparation with LC-Q-ToF-MS analysis for the large-scale screening of pesticides, veterinary drugs, mycotoxins and other chemicals in baby foods: a robust early-warning system to improve infant food monitoring.

To highlight chemical hazards in infant food, this study proposes a generic method combining QuEChUP extraction followed by LC-QTOF-MS analysis. The screening method was validated according to SANTE/11312/2021. A large part of the targeted contaminants had a limit of identification ≤0.01 mg.kg-1 (default MRL for pesticides). The method was then used on 123 baby foods. Targeted analysis enabled unequivocal identification of 54 contaminants, with notable occurrence of the flame-retardant TDCPP (∼27 %), the fungicides fluopyram (∼24 %), difenoconazole (∼23 %), fludioxonil and pyrimethanil (∼19 %)

Review: Drug concentrations in hair and their relevance in drug facilitated crimes.

Segmental hair analysis can provide valuable retrospective information on the history of drug exposure in victims of drug facilitated crimes (DFC). This is now possible with availability of sensitive tandem MS techniques such as GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS allowing drugs to be detected at pg/mg concentrations after a single dose. In this review hair concentrations of 35 psychoactive drugs given in 20 controlled dose studies are reviewed and compared to the 25 different drugs detected in reported case work. The most common drugs were the benzodiazepines and related hypnotics, gamma-hydroxybutyrate (G

A review of microbes and chemical contaminants in dairy products in sub-Saharan Africa.

Animal milk types in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are processed into varieties of products using different traditional methods and are widely consumed by households to support nutritional intake and diet. Dairy products contain several microorganisms, their metabolites, and other chemical compounds, some with health benefits and many others considered as potential health hazards. Consumption of contaminated milk products could have serious health implications for consumers. To access the safety of milk products across SSA, studies in the region investigating the occurrences of pathogens as well as

Study on the remediation of tetracycline antibiotics and roxarsone contaminated soil.

Antibiotics are commonly used in livestock and poultry breeding along with organic arsenic. Through long-term accumulation, they can enter into the surrounding soil through various pathways and contaminate the soil. In this paper, tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) and roxarsone (ROX) contaminated soil were used as the representatives of the two kinds of veterinary drugs contaminated soil, respectively, to study the thermal desorption behavior and arsenic stabilization process. Different parameters like heating temperatures, heat duration, stabilizer type and dosage were optimized for effective re

Sunscreens part 2: Regulation and safety.

The second part of this CME article discusses sunscreen regulation and safety considerations for humans and the environment. First, we provide an overview of the history of the US Food and Drug Administration's regulation of sunscreen. Recent Food and Drug Administration studies clearly demonstrate that organic ultraviolet filters are systemically absorbed during routine sunscreen use, but to date there is no evidence of associated negative health effects. We also review the current evidence of sunscreen's association with vitamin D levels and frontal fibrosing alopecia, and recent concerns re

Analysis of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) on hair after single and repeated short in vivo passive exposures to low- and high-Δ9-THC-cannabis.

Prolonged cannabis smoke exposure could give rise to detectable levels of cannabinoids in hair, complicating forensic hair analysis interpretation. Exposure to "light cannabis", i.e., products that are low in Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and enriched in cannabidiol (CBD), can additionally lead to contamination, as shown in vitro. The aim of the present study was to assess whether detectable hair levels of Δ9-THC and CBD could arise in vivo from short, single and repeated passive exposure to cannabis and "light cannabis" and whether the two products could be distinguished. Four volunteers u

Visual Inspection of Topical Ophthalmic Formulations Packaged in Opaque and Semi-Transparent Containers: Working Towards Alignment with USP<790> Visible Particulates in Injections.

Topical ophthalmic solutions, suspensions, and emulsions are typically packaged in opaque or semi-transparent plastic dropper bottles. This packaging provides resistance to breakage and the controlled drop size needed in ophthalmic container systems. Recent changes to USP <771> Ophthalmic Products-Quality Tests have impacted the particulate and foreign matter testing requirements for ophthalmic products dosed via topical application. The USP <771> chapter instructs that topical products undergo visual inspection for particulate matter as described in USP <790> Visible Particulates in Injection

Quality Assurance and Quality Control: Being Prepared for U.S. Food and Drug Administration Inspections and Staying in Compliance with United States Pharmacopeia Chapter <797>: Part 1.

Compounders engaged in making sterile preparations need to employ a quality assurance system of documented policies and procedures to attempt to reduce the possibility of contamination. The quality-assurance program will be monitored through the facility's quality control system. Compounders should be aware of the requirements of each state they are licensed in as well as the inspection observations commonly noted in 483s issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In part 1 of this 2-part article, we discuss the currently evolving regulatory environment and why sterile compounding requir

Levamisole-induced occlusive necrotizing vasculitis of the ears after use of cocaine contaminated with levamisole.

Based on the best available data, approximately 2.1 million Americans use illicit cocaine each month; for the last several months, 30% of that cocaine has been "cut" with a veterinary pharmaceutical, levamisole. Levamisole can cause agranulocytosis, leaving patients susceptible to fulminate and opportunistic infections and also can cause a debilitating cutaneous necrotizing vasculitis. In this manuscript, we describe a case and provide an image of levamisole-induced necrotizing vasculitis of the ears.

Abuse of fentanyl: An emerging problem to face.

Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid used as a narcotic analgesic supplement in general and regional anesthesia as well as in management of persistent, severe chronic pain. Alarming epidemiological and forensic medicine reports, accumulated mainly during the last two decades, point to a growing increase in illicit use of fentanyl, mainly in North America and Europe. Toxicological data indicates that fentanyl use is inextricably linked with polydrug use. There are two main sources of fentanyl on the "recreational" drug market. First, the most common, combines illicitly manufactured fentanyl fr

Chemicals in cow milk and soy beverages: Neurotoxicity and neuroprotection.

Cow milk constitutes a fundamental component of the human diet. Along with high nutritional value, contains neuroprotective components, caseins, lactoferrin, phospholipids and tryptophan. However, due to the use of pesticides in agriculture, veterinary drugs in livestock, and the presence of other contaminants, cow milk is frequently contaminated by these chemicals posing a risk to human health, namely through neurotoxicity. Strategies to decrease these contaminants include detoxification via microorganisms. Concomitantly, increased consumption of plant-based protein to substitute animal sourc

Pharmaceutical Contaminants in Indian Freshwaters: Toxicological Pathways, Ecological Risks, and Remediation Approaches.

Pharmaceutical pollution of freshwater ecosystems is an emerging environmental and public-health issue in India. The high drug consumption in the country, along with the presence of concentrated manufacturing hubs, inadequate wastewater treatment, and weak monitoring systems, is leading to rising pollutant release. This review summarizes the existing evidence on pharmaceutical contaminants in Indian freshwaters with the focus on classes of pollutants, sources of contamination, environmental fate, toxicological pathways, ecological risks and remediation strategies. Antibiotics, non-steroidal an

Effects of ephedrine and phenylephrine on cerebral oxygenation: observational prospective study using near-infrared time-resolved spectroscopy.

It has been reported that cerebral oxygenation (ScO2) measured by near infrared spectroscopy is maintained or increased by treatment with ephedrine, whereas almost all previous reports demonstrated that phenylephrine reduced ScO2. As the mechanism of the latter, the interference of the extracranial blood flow, that is extracranial contamination, has been suspected. Accordingly, in this prospective observational study, we utilized time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS), in which the effect of extracranial contamination is thought to be minimal, and evaluated whether the same result was obtained. We m
