Cross-country studies reveal two consistent gender gaps in education-underachievement in school by boys and low rates of participation in STEM studies by girls. Recent economics research has shown the importance of social influences on women's STEM avoidance, but male low achievement has been less-studied and tends to be attributed to behavior problems and deficient non-cognitive skills. I revisit the determinants of the gender gap in U.S. educational attainment with a relatively-advantaged sample of young men and women and find that school behavior and measured skills are not very important d

The purpose of this article is to investigate the use of harsh disciplinary methods by parents as corrective techniques for their children, and the resulting behavioral aspects in the affected children. Sociodemographic predictors are tested for estimating the impact of harsh disciplining by parents. A primary survey of a sample of 1,751 children 10 to 12 years of age across 12 provinces of Assiut Governorate in Egypt is considered. The analysis is carried out using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Structural equation modeling is used for testing the significance o

Intermountain Healthcare hospitals and providers are eligible for approximately $95 million in incentives from the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), which requires that hospitals and providers use a certified electronic health record (EHR) in a meaningful way. This paper describes the our progress in readying legacy systems for certification, including measuring, and filling gaps in (EHR) functionality. Also addressed are some of the challenges and successes in meeting meaningful use. Methods for measuring and tracking levels of clinician meaningful u

S. Pullorum (SP) and S. Gallinarum (SG) are very similar. They are the agents of pullorum disease and fowl typhoid, respectively, and the two diseases are responsible for economic losses in poultry production. Although SP and SG are difficult to be differentiated in routine laboratory procedures, the ability to metabolize ornithine is a biochemical test that may be used to achieve this aim. While SP is able to decarboxylate this amino acid, SG is not. However, the isolation of strains showing atypical biochemical behavior has made this differentiation difficult. One of the genes associated wit

Compulsive hoarding, the acquisition of and failure to discard large numbers of possessions, is associated with substantial health risk, impairment in functioning, and economic burden. Despite clear indications that hoarding has a detrimental effect on people living with or near someone with a hoarding problem, no empirical research has examined these harmful effects. The aim of the present study was to examine the burden of hoarding on family members. Six hundred sixty-five family informants who reported having a family member or friend with hoarding behaviors completed an internet-based surv

The high incidence of chronic ear disease among the three ethnic groups, Eskimo, Algonkian Indians, and Caucasians living under the same environmental conditions is studied. The role of socio-economic factors in the incidence and sequelae of ear disease in this population was similar to other studies among the native peoples of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The variation in the disease pattern in the different ethnic groups was shown to be related to the aeration of the middle ear cleft. The air cell system of the mastoid is determined by x-rays and/or surgical exploration, but the patency of

BACKGROUND: Risky sexual behavior refers to sexual activity that increases the likelihood of STIs, unintended pregnancies, and negative psychosocial outcomes. College students are susceptible to such behaviors. This study aimed to identify proximal situational factors contributing to risky sexual behaviors among Chinese college students and to integrate these with individual-level psychosocial correlates using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design.
METHODS: In phase 1 (cross-sectional, September-December 2022), college students from three universities in Daqing, Northeast China, compl

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly disrupted daily life, amplifying existing stressors and introducing new challenges that potentially reshaped patterns of depression. While prior research has identified key correlates of depressive symptoms, it remains unclear how these associations may have shifted in the post-pandemic era across different age groups. Thus, this study examined changes in depressive symptom levels and their sociodemographic, economic, and behavioral correlates before and after the pandemic across different adult age groups in the United States. Data were drawn from two cycles o

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death and disability and living in areas with low socio-economic status (SES) is associated with increased risk of CVD. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, physical inactivity, an unhealthy diet and harmful alcohol use are main risk factors that contribute to other modifiable risk factors, such as hypertension, raised blood cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes. The potential impact of area-level socio-economic status (ASES) on metabolic CVD risk factors via lifestyle behaviors independent of individual SES has not been investigated

BACKGROUND: International migration rapidly increased in the last decade, raising a renewed attention to its impact on public health. We evaluated differences in rubella immunization rate (RIR) between immigrant and Italian women of childbearing age and tried to identify the driving factors causing them.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Italian behavioral surveillance system PASSI collected in 2011-2015 in a nationally representative sample of residents in Italy. The analysis was performed using log-binomial models to compare RIR between 41,094 Italian women and 3140 regular immigrant women
