BACKGROUND: The most commonly performed nerve transfers in upper trunk (UT) or partial brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) include the spinal accessory nerve to suprascapular nerve, Oberlin, and, lately, radial nerve (RN) (branch to triceps) to axillary nerve (AN) transfers. Routinely, the former 3 procedures are performed through an anterior approach (supraclavicular plus infraclavicular), while the triceps branch of the RN-AN transfer has been performed through a posterior approach with the patient in either the prone or semilateral position, which requires a separate incision in the posterior a

BACKGROUND: The ideal treatment of terrble triad injuries and whether fixation of coronoid process fractures is needed or not are still debated. Therefore, we aimed to investigate if terrible triad injuries necessitate coronoid fracture fixation and evaluate if non-fixation treatments have similar efficacies and outcomes as fixation-treatments in cases of terrible triad injuries.
METHODS: From August 2011 to July 2020, 23 patients with acute terrible triad injuries without involvement of the anteromedial facet of the coronoid process were included to evaluate the postoperative clinical and ra

Forty intact cadaver elbows were studied to determine the contribution of the capitellum to elbow stability. With the elbow at 10 degrees of flexion, valgus motion of the elbow after capitellum excision demonstrated a minimal increase. Although some increase in valgus motion did occur after capitellum excision and radial head resection it was not until the ulnar collateral ligament was released that a severe valgus deformity was produced. In addition, isolated capitellum excisions occurring with release of the medial collateral ligament produced severe valgus motion, demonstrating the importan

CONTEXT: Deficits in balance can negatively impact throwing biomechanics in overhead throwing athletes. Previous work has demonstrated discrepancies in balance, measured by the Y-Balance Test Lower Quarter (YBT-LQ), in baseball athletes. However, there is limited data regarding anterior reach (ANT) YBT-LQ scores in baseball athletes with shoulder and elbow injuries and between athletes undergoing surgical versus conservative treatment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether differences exist in ANT YBT-LQ scores between baseball athletes with elbow and shoulder injuries …

BACKGROUND: The lateral humeral condyle fractures in children accounts for one fifth of all elbow fractures. These fractures have a propensi … atistically significant positive predictors for conservative management. The presence of concurrent elbow injuries and type of fracture (displaced >2 mm) were statistically significant positive predictors for surgical management.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that majority of the patients with lateral condyle humeral fractures had presented with either un …

Varus posteromedial rotatory instability (VPMRI) is one of the types of complex elbow instability, which was initially proposed by O 'Driscoll in 2003. Its typical clinical manifestations are anteromedial coronoid fracture (AMCF), injury of lateral collateral ligament complex (LCL), widening of the lateral humeroradial space, and subluxation of the coronoid process relative to the medial edge of the humeral trochlea. However, it presents diagnostic challenges due to its low incidence, complex mechanisms of injury, and radiography reveals only isolated coronoid process fractures without obvious

Elbow dislocation is the second most common type of joint dislocation in adults and the most common joint dislocation in children. These dislocations are commonly associated with significant soft tissue injury and/or fractures. Anterior dislocation of the radio-capitellar articulation is uncommon. Failure of relocation of the radial head due to soft tissue imposition requiring open reduction is rare, however, is extremely important to recognise clinically and radiologically. This case report describes a case of anterior dislocation of the radio-capitellar joint due to entrapment of the brachia

Medial epicondylitis, which is also called "Golfer's Elbow" is a pathology which typically presents as medial elbow pain. It affects 1% of the general population, yet affects 3.8% to 8.2% of work-related complaints. Golfer's elbow is common in the 40 to 60-year-old age group so those suffering from it are part of the workforce and hence, its economic impact. Women and men alike suffer from golfer's elbow, and microtrauma combined with attritional changes in the common flexor tendon origin at the medial aspect of the elbow are the culprit of this pathology. The first line of treatment is conser

The study included two adults and four children who underwent open reduction for subacute, untreated posterior dislocation of the elbow. Elbow stiffness was the main indication for surgery, and in all cases elbow movement was inadequate for the activities of daily living. Mean time from injury was 2 months and mean follow-up was 19 months. At final follow-up there were no cases of instability; according to the Mayo Elbow Performance Index(14), four outcomes were excellent, one good and one poor; the mean score improved from five preoperatively to 83 postoperatively, mean elbow flexion from 18

Elbow injuries continue to rise with increased athletic activity and life expectancy. Knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics of this sophisticated joint, various injury patterns, and the implication of injury to the static and dynamic stabilizers will result in improvement in specific diagnosis, and therapy. The surgical treatment of trauma to the adult elbow has evolved rapidly in recent years and many useful concepts and techniques have been established. This paper reviews the published scientific data and current opinion available to guide patient care.

Evaluation of the overhead athlete with elbow pain represents a diagnostic challenge for the clinician. Accurate diagnosis depends on a thorough understanding of the types of injuries typically found in the overhead athlete as well as a working knowledge of the anatomy of the elbow. An accurate, [figure: see text] focused history and physical examination, combined with appropriate imaging studies will lead to the correct diagnosis. Appropriate treatment may then be rendered with the goal of returning the athlete to participation.

A case report of an unreduced dislocation of the elbow requiring late open reduction is presented, and the literature is reviewed. Early reduction of elbow dislocation, by closed or open means, is of paramount importance if good functional results are to be obtained. Closed reduction of an elbow dislocation is unlikely to be successful if attempted later than 21 days after the injury. The results are acceptable if open reduction is undertaken within 3 months of the injury, but after 6 months the results are disappointing and arthroplasty is an alternative.

AIM: Elbow joint release surgery is commonly used to treat elbow joint stiffness. Though it can restore elbow joint mobility, some patients may still experience range of motion (ROM) loss after surgery. Therefore, this study aims to explore the factors influencing ROM loss after elbow joint release surgery in elderly patients with traumatic elbow stiffness.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 122 elderly patients with traumatic elbow stiffness who underwent elbow joint release surgery at Hanzhong Central Hospital from January 2023 to April 2024. The patients with range of motion loss w

Patients with upper-extremity amputations necessitated by burn injury have frequently faced delays in prosthetic fit. At the Regional Medical Center, Memphis, Tennessee, seven patients required amputations because of burns. These injuries were electrical in four cases, thermal and crush in one case, thermal in one case, and steam and crush in one case. Five patients had below-elbow amputations, one had a bilateral below-elbow amputation, and one had a bilateral above-elbow amputation. All patients were fitted with prostheses within 30 days of the last definitive surgery on the amputated extrem

The latissimus dorsi myo-cutaneous flap has been used for restoration of elbow flexion in 8 cases. The indication for this transposition were brachial plexus injuries, significant trauma to the upper limb and restoration of arm contour. The surgical technique involved unipolar muscular transposition (4 cases) with tendon plication (one case) and bipolar transposition (three cases). The evaluation of results is based on the force and degree of elbow flexion, active pronation and supination, as cortical integration. We consider that we have obtained good results in 5 cases and moderate results i

INTRODUCTION: The dislocation of the elbow joint to the posterior or postero-lateral region accompanied by fractures in the radial head or neck and coronoid process of the Ulna is known as a terrible triad injury of the elbow (TTI).
IMPORTANCE: This injury presents as unique challenge for orthopedic surgeons due to elbow instability and stiffness, making the surgical intervention more difficult than usual.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old man suffered from polytrauma, including a pelvis fracture, a left humerus shaft fracture, and left ulna shaft fracture. An open reduction and internal fixa

Transarticular external skeletal fixation usually involves rigid bars that result in a stable but stiff joint. This study describes the technique and the outcome of an elastic transarticular external fixator (ETEF) applied to the elbow joint. Four cases of elbow luxation with collateral ligament injuries were managed with closed reduction and application of an ETEF to maintain the reduction. A triceps tendon avulsion was surgically managed before applying an ETEF. The clinical outcome was considered excellent in 2 cats, good in 2 dogs (1 elbow luxation and the avulsion of the triceps tendon),

BACKGROUND: Anecdotally accepted practice for evaluation of children with clinically suspected or radiographically proven wrist fracture in many urgent care and primary care settings is concurrent imaging of the forearm and elbow, despite the lack of evidence to support additional images. These additional radiographs may be an unnecessary source of radiation and use of health care resources.
OBJECTIVE: Our study assesses the necessity of additional radiographs of the forearm and elbow in children with wrist injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed electronic medical records of children 17

CASE: A 10-year-old girl sustained a radial neck fracture with a posterior elbow dislocation. She was treated with closed reduction of the elbow with subsequent intra-articular displacement of the radial head, which necessitated open reduction and pinning of the radial neck fracture.
CONCLUSION: Displacement of the radial neck fracture from impingement of the capitellum on the anterior radial head during closed reduction of the elbow dislocation is a rare injury pattern. It is important to examine the radial neck in high-energy posterior elbow dislocations before attempted reduction. We prese
