Na+ channels and amiloride-induced noise in the mammalian colon epithelium.

(1) The effects of the Na+-channel blocker, amiloride, on the short-circuit current carried by Na+ was studied with fluctuation analysis, in rabbit descending colon epithelium. (2) In the presence of mucosal amiloride, the power spectrum of the Na+-current noise showed a Lorentzian component. When the Na+ current was reduced by increasing the blocker concentrations, the Lorentzian plateau decreased and corner frequency increased. Macroscopic short-circuit current and current-noise data are evidence for a two-state mechanism of the blocker interaction with the Na+ channel. (3) On- and off-rate

[Measurement of the propagation rate of the summation action potential in the vomeronasal and olfactory nerves of Rana temporaria frogs].

It was shown that summation action potential (AP) in various points of the nerve result from summation AP in various bundles of fibres. The rate of propagation of AP in various bundles may differ rather significantly. Propagation of AP from the site of stimulation takes place with acceleration, which is presumably due to the inhibitory effect of the stimulus at the site of its application (together with the excitatory effect as well). Both nerves exhibit also supernormal phenomenon which reveals itself in the increase of the propagation rate of the second AP during stimulation by paired stimul

Hemifacial spasm: clinical and electrophysiologic observations.

Twenty-three patients with hemifacial spasm were studied clinically and electrodiagnostically. Seven patients had mild facial weakness. All patients had clinical evidence of synkinesis, which often varied considerably. Facial nerve conduction and blink reflex latencies were normal. Facial synkinesis could be measured objectively on the involved side in all patients by simultaneously recording from the orbicularis oculi and orbicularis oris muscles at the time of supraorbital nerve stimulation. Using this procedure, synkinesis was also observed in association with aberrant regeneration after Be

The electrolytic conductivity detector as an element-selective gas chromatographic detector.

The response and elemental selectivity of the electrolytic conductivity detector (E1CD) to nitrogen-, chlorine-, and sulfur-containing compounds has been investigated as a function of chemical structure, furnace chemistry conditions (i.e., reaction gas, furnace temperature, catalyst, and post-furnace chemical abstractors), and solubilization-and-ionization processes (electrolytic chemistry and electrolytic conductance). The "profiling" of detector response for the gas-liquid chromatographic-E1CD analysis of selected compounds under defined furnace chemistry reaction conditions and electrolytic

Mesoporous SnO2 synthesized with non-ionic surfactants as an anode material for lithium batteries.

Mesoporous tin oxides were successfully prepared with the use of non-ionic surfactants, Pluronic 123 (P-123) and Tetronic 908 (T-908). Surface analysis of SnO2 synthesized with P123 showed an average pore size of approximately 15 nm. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and low-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements also confirmed their mesoporous nature. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and wide-angle XRD studies revealed that these compounds have a casserite-type SnO2 structure. The electrochemical properties of these materials as anodes in lithium batteries showed ex

A model analysis of aftereffects of high-intensity DC stimulation on action potential of ventricular muscle.

The mechanism for aftereffects of high-intensity dc stimulation on ventricular muscle was studied by using Beeler-Reuter's action potential model. A leak conductance (Gpore, maximal value from 40 to 80 microS for 1 cm2 of membrane), which mimics reversible dielectric breakdown of the cell membrane by the shock, was incorporated into the model. To simulate resealing process, Gpore was assumed to decrease after the shock exponentially at a time constant (tau pore) of 5-50 s. The simulation results are qualitatively consistent with our experimental observations in guinea pig papillary muscle [1];

Decrease in rat submandibular acinar cell volume during ACh stimulation.

Changes in acinar cell volume were measured in the perfused submandibular gland of the rat at 23 degrees C during salivary secretion induced by acetylcholine (ACh). Cellular volume was monitored by two methods: the impedance method and the morphometric method using video-enhanced contrast optical microscopy. Both measurements revealed a decrease in acinar cell volume in response to 1 microM ACh. Within the 1st min of stimulation, secretion increased to the initial maximum (initial secretion), and cell shrinkage occurred. During sustained stimulation, secretory rate and cell volume were maintai

Mechanoreceptors in rat glabrous skin: redevelopment of function after nerve crush.

In the glabrous skin of the rat's hindfoot the same triple set of low-threshold mechanoreceptors is present as has been found in other mammals: slowly adapting (SA), rapidly adapting (RA), and very rapidly adapting Pacinian corpuscle-like (PC) receptors. Their functional characteristics were examined in normal rats and compared with those of sensitive mechanoreceptors found in the glabrous skin of the foot 2-24 wk after crush of the plantar nerves, resulting in regeneration of the transected nerve fibers. After 2 wk of nerve regeneration, low-threshold RA and SA cutaneous mechanoreceptors reap

Modulation of Ion Distributions and Electroneutrality inside Nanopores by Ion Transport under Electric Fields.

Nanopores have broad applications in biosensing, energy conversion, and material separation, with their performance highly dependent on the ion distribution and transport. Here, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to systematically examine the ionic behaviors under varying surface charge densities, applied voltages, and solution concentrations. We focused on the static ion distribution without electric fields, as well as the dynamic distribution and transport of ions under electric fields. Based on the radial ion distributions, whose positional characteristics are determined solely by

Inactivation Kinetics and Membrane Potential of Pathogens in Soybean Curd Subjected to Pulsed Ohmic Heating Depending on Applied Voltage and Duty Ratio.

The aim of this research was to investigate the efficacy of the duty ratio and applied voltage in the inactivation of pathogens in soybean curd by pulsed ohmic heating (POH). The heating rate of soybean curd increased rapidly as the applied voltage increased, although the duty ratio did not affect the temperature profile. We supported this result by verifying that electrical conductivity increased with the applied voltage. Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes in soybean curd were significantly (P < 0.05) inactivated by more than 1 log un

Gelatin-Based Head Phantoms: A Practical Guide for Artificial Brain Signal Research.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of human subjects in the development of biomedical devices presents both ethical and practical challenges. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals exhibit interindividual variability and are subject to fluctuations induced by movement and emotional states. Hence, the fabrication of artificial tissues (phantoms) capable of accurately replicating human organs and tissues is of critical importance. The primary objective of this study was to create phantoms that accurately mimic the electrical conductivity of human head tissues. METHODS: Phantom compositions were optimize

Conductive Microneedle Patch with Mitochondria-Localized Generation of Nitric Oxide Promotes Heart Repair after Ischemia-Reperfusion Therapy.

Timely blood resupply is a clinical strategy to treat myocardial infarction, which unavoidably causes myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. With disturbed electrical conduction and oxidative stress in infarcted myocardium, injured heart experiences a negative ventricle remodeling process, and finally leads to heart failure. Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-lived signaling molecule regulating cardiovascular homeostasis, while vasodilation of systemic vasculature is accompanied by its exogenous supplementation. Meanwhile, connexin 43 (Cx43), a gap junction protein for electrical propagation in myo

Electroactive Dual-Drug Hydrogel-PLA Conduit for Nerve Regeneration.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) remains a major clinical challenge due to the limitations of autologous nerve grafting. Herein, a multifunctional composite nerve conduit was developed by integrating an oriented collagen-grafted polylactic acid (PLA) electrospun scaffold with a conductive and anti-inflammatory hydrogel to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration. The hydrogel was fabricated by chemically cross-linking carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), incorporating polyaniline (PANI) to impart electrical conductivity and loading rhein (RH) for sustained anti-

The Multi-Conductivity Clausius-Mossotti Factor as an Electrophysiology Rosetta Stone: Dielectrophoresis, Membrane Potential and Zeta Potential.

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) has been used for decades to estimate the passive electrical properties of cells. However, the body of work on cell electrophysiology derived from Clausius-Mossotti analysis of DEP-derived data pales to insignificance against the wider backdrop of cell electrophysiology based on the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equation measured by patch clamp, which focuses on membrane potential Vm-a parameter which does not appear in the Clausius-Mossotti model-and values of patch clamp-derived membrane conductance which, shorn of double-layer conductivity, are often orders of magnitude lower

Time courses of cell electroporation as revealed by submicrosecond imaging of transmembrane potential.

Changes in the membrane conductance of sea urchin eggs, during the course of electroporation, were investigated over the time range of 0.5 microsecond to 1 ms by imaging the transmembrane potential at a submicrosecond resolution with the voltage-sensitive fluorescent dye RH292. When a rectangular electric pulse of moderate intensity was applied across an egg, a position-dependent potential developed synchronously with the pulse, as theory predicts for a cell with an insulating membrane. From the rise and fall times, the membrane capacitance of unfertilized eggs was estimated to be 0.95 microF/
