We analyzed the clinical and electrophysiological findings of 77 patients suffering from progressive cone or cone-rod dystrophies. The onset of symptoms was at the average age of 19.7 +/- 19.4 years. In some patients, the disease started within the 5th decade. The mean visual acuity was 0.19 +/- 0.2, while in 38%, the visual acuity was lower than 0.1. Sleep apnea syndrome is estimated to affect as many as 2 to 3 percent of the adult male population. Excessive snoring and daytime sleepiness are but a few of the many clues to diagnosis. The hypoxemia occurring as a result of apnea may lead to pulmonary hypertension. Depressed respiratory center neural output or upper airway occlusion during sleep may cause the apnea. BACKGROUND: Bevacizumab (Avastin) has been used as off-label treatment for the specific inhibition of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Although only intravenous administration of the drug is approved in combination therapy of colorectal carcinoma, promising short-term results have been reported about its intravitreal administration. However, VEGF is also known to exhibit neurotrophic capabilities. Therefore, blockage of all VEGF isoforms by bevacizumab could induce toxic effects. Missing randomized controlled studies and unclear long-term risks require further evaluation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on the ocular surface.
METHODS: This is a prospective, sectional cohort study of 80 eyes of 40 patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Routine ophthalmologic examination and ocular surface evaluation, including biomicroscopy, Schirmer 1 testing, tear break-up time measurement, ocular surface staining, and conjunctival impression cytology, were performed in both of each patient's eyes before and 4 months after starting CPAP therapy.
