In our global world, the increasing complexity of social relations and transport infrastructures are key factors in the spread of epidemics. In recent years, the increasing availability of computer power has enabled both to obtain reliable data allowing one to quantify the complexity of the networks on which epidemics may propagate and to envision computational tools able to tackle the analysis of such propagation phenomena. These advances have put in evidence the limits of homogeneous assumptions and simple spatial diffusion approaches, and stimulated the inclusion of complex features and het…

In the United States, since 2001, an average of 265 mumps cases (range: 231-293 cases) have been reported each year, and in Iowa, an average of five cases have been reported annually since 1996. However, in 2006, by March 28, a total of 219 mumps cases had been reported in Iowa, and an additional 14 persons with clinically compatible symptoms were being investigated in three neighboring states (11 in Illinois, two in Nebraska, and one in Minnesota) in what has become the largest epidemic of mumps in the United States since 1988. This report summarizes and characterizes the ongoing mumps epidem

AIMS: To study the clinical profile and outcome of critically ill patients suffering from leptospirosis with organ dysfunction and correlate mortality with individual risk factors.
METHODS: A study of critically ill patients suffering from leptospirosis was carried out in the Medical Intensive Care Unit of a tertiary centre of a metropolitan city between 1st June 2002 and 31st May 2003. All the patients in whom diagnosis was confirmed by ELISA IgM antibody testing underwent thorough clinical examination and necessary biochemical investigations. They received standard antimicrobial therapy and

Within a four-week period, five patients were admitted to the maternity ward of the Utrecht Children's Hospital diagnosed with puerperal sepsis due to group-A streptococcal infection. The clinical presentation was different for each patient. All patients recovered upon adequate antibiotic treatment. One of the children died, possibly due to sepsis and hypotension of his mother. As group-A streptococci can be extremely contagious and an epidemic was suspected, measures for additional hygiene were taken. Furthermore, all personnel at the maternity ward and the obstetric centre were tested. T-ser

The data on the morbidity in infectious diseases in the Chechen Republic in recent years are presented. As revealed from these data, under the conditions of the crisis situation the tendency towards the deterioration of the epidemiological situation began to show from the beginning of the 1990s. The growth of morbidity in some infections was registered, the outbreaks of dangerous infections (cholera, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, typhoid fever) appeared. The armed conflicts led to the disintegration of the sphere of social services of the republic and were accompanied by the destruction of the sy

Rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) are preventable, but epidemics of rubella and CRS are not infrequent in the Caribbean and other developing countries. As a result of a surveillance system initiated after an epidemic of rubella in the Barbadian population in 1996, cases of CRS were identified and investigated. A total of seven cases of CRS were proven to be rubella IgM-positive. The infants were found to have a mean birthweight of 2587 g and a mean gestational age of 38 weeks. The clinical course, complications and outcome of those infants were documented and the cost of acute hosp…

AIM: In 1997, an immunisation campaign, using measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, was planned for children aged 2-10 years to prevent a measles epidemic predicted by mathematical modelling. The epidemic started before the campaign and is described here.
METHOD: Measles hospitalisation, notification and laboratory data were combined.
RESULTS: The epidemic started in April 1997 and was largely over by January 1998. No deaths were identified and only one hospitalisation was coded as measles encephalitis, compared to seven deaths and ten cases of measles encephalitis in the 1991 epidemic. For the 12

Two closely related boys from the same house hold (Home 1), aged two and three, were affected with fulminant meningococcal sepsis known as Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome. Neisseria meningitidis serogorup B was isolated from their blood and cerebrospinal fluid. The two-year-old boy died one day after the onset of the disease. Epidemiological examination of contacts and pharyngeal swabs were performed in 14 persons from the household, all of them relatives of the affected children, as well as in a number of other contacts. Chemoprophylaxis with cotrimoxazole was simultaneously administered to

The risks of epidemics in Reunion island depend on determining or favourable factors. The determining factors, links in the epidemic chain, may or may not exist but they can be introduced from the outside. The risk of importing these factors is especially important when the exchanges with the epidemic zones are easy and frequent. Reunion island, at the moment exempt from certain pathologies such as malaria, dengue-fever and urinary Schistosomiasis, is a good example. However, if the presence of these determining factors is necessary, that is not enough in itself. Other factors come into play; …

This paper describes the epidemiology of a probable Shigella dysenteriae type 1 dysentery epidemic in western Kenya. A retrospective record review over 2 years of all cases of dysentery, amoebiasis and diarrhoea was carried out in 13 healthcare facilities in the Rarieda Division of Nyanza province. Of the 3301 cases recorded, 2191 were dysentery, giving a cumulative 2 years incidence rate for dysentery of 4%. The epidemic began in December 1994 and peaked in February 1995, coinciding with the very dry season. One location in the area had an overall attack rate of 9.3%, double that of other loc

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if the implementation of a formal set of infection-control policy and procedures (ICPPs) … of EKC and affected patients significantly decreased.
RESULTS: The incidence of institutional EKC epidemics per year was at least one and as many as three from 1984 through 1991. After implementation of a formal set of ICPPs, no epidemics occurred in 2 of 4 years studied. The number of epidemics and affected patients was significantly less when the years …

An ophthalmic examination was performed on 29 epidemic nephropathy patients consequently treated in the Central Hospital of Central Finland during the acute phase of the disease. Twenty-six of those patients were reexamined after an interval of one month. In the acute phase of the disease pathological ophthalmic changes were found in 15 cases (52%). The symptoms observed were conjunctival injection, oedema, flare and cell reaction in anterior chamber, anisochoria, retinal oedema, acute glaucoma and myopic shift of refraction. The main effect of disease on intraocular pressure was pressure-lowe
