Can synthetic data reproduce real-world findings in epidemiology? A replication study using adversarial random forests.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic data hold substantial potential to address practical challenges in epidemiology due to restricted data access and privacy concerns. However, many current methods suffer from limited quality, high computational demands, and complexity for non-experts. Furthermore, common evaluation strategies for synthetic data often fail to directly reflect statistical utility and measure privacy risks sufficiently. Against this background, a critical underexplored question is whether synthetic data can reliably reproduce key findings from epidemiological research while preserving privacy

Molecular epidemiology of canine parvovirus type 2 in Sicily, southern Italy: A geographical island, an epidemiological continuum.

Since it emerged as a major dog pathogen, canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) has featured a remarkable genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity, whose biological, epidemiological, and clinical impact is still debated. The continuous monitoring of this pathogen is thus of pivotal importance. In the present study, the molecular epidemiology of CPV-2 in Sicily, southern Italy, has been updated by analysing 215 nearly complete sequences of the capsid protein VP2, obtained from rectal swabs/faeces or tissue samples collected between 2019 and 2022 from 346 dogs with suspected infectious gastrointestinal d

The challenges of defining hormesis in epidemiological studies: The case of radiation hormesis.

In the current radiation protection system, preventive measures and occupational exposure limits for controlling occupational exposure to ionizing radiation are based on the linear no-threshold extrapolation model. However, currently an increasing body of evidence indicates that this paradigm predicts very poorly biological responses in the low-dose exposure region. In addition, several in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated the presence of hormetic dose response curves correlated to ionizing radiation low exposure. In this regard, it is noteworthy that also the findings of different epidem

Characterization of an outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease in Nanchang, China in 2010.

Recent outbreaks of human enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection and EV71-associated hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in China have affected millions and potentially lead to life-threatening complications in newborns. Furthermore, these outbreaks represent a significant global public health issue in the world. Understanding the epidemiology of HFMD and EV71 infection and their transmission patterns in China is essential for controlling outbreaks. However, no studies on the outbreaks of HFMD and EV71 infection in China during 2010 have been reported. In this report, we carried out an epidemiologic

Arbovirus - a threat to transfusion safety in Spain: a narrative review.

Arboviruses represent a threat to transfusion safety for several reasons: the presence of vectors and the notification of autochthonous cases in our region, the recent increase in the number of cases transmitted through blood and/or blood component transfusion, the high prevalence rates of RNA of the main arboviruses in asymptomatic blood donors, and their ability to survive processing and storage in the different blood components. In an epidemic outbreak caused by an arbovirus in our region, transfusion centres can apply different measures: reactive measures, related to donor selection or arb

Relative excess risk: an alternative measure of comparative risk.

The proverbial relative risk may not always be the most suitable measure to compare the risk of two exposures, since it inherently includes a background effect. An alternative comparative measure, the relative excess risk, is introduced. It applies to situations in which an "unexposed" reference group is included in addition to the two exposures under evaluation. This comparative measure is based solely on the component of risk due to the exposures, since it removes the background risk. Estimators of the relative excess risk are presented, along with formulas for the confidence intervals under

Position statement on macroprolactinemia from the Department of Neuroendocrinology of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM) and the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine (SBPC/ML).

Measurement of serum prolactin levels is a common practice in clinical settings, particularly among women of reproductive age. In cases of hyperprolactinemia, identifying macroprolactinemia can help prevent unnecessary investigation and inappropriate treatments. This Position Statement, jointly prepared by the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM) and the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine (SBPC/ML), addresses several aspects of macroprolactinemia relevant to clinical practice - including concepts, definitions, epidemiological aspects, measurement te

From Measurement Failure to Privacy Infrastructure: Reframing Contact Tracing Governance for the Next Pandemic.

No measurement, no understanding; no understanding, no control: this foundational scientific principle was exposed as a public health dysfunction by the COVID-19 pandemic. Transmission chains spread invisibly, and the contact histories, mobility patterns, and biosignals necessary for control were never systematically collected. Although sensors and digital technologies existed, the fundamental reason measurement failed was the absence of privacy infrastructure that would have enabled people to provide data with confidence. This failure had structural reasons. The object of measurement in infec

The Role of Camels in the Epizootiology and Epidemiology of Plague in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Camels are increasingly recognized as an important epizootological and epidemiological link in natural plague foci, contributing to the transmission of Yersinia pestis from wildlife to humans. In the Republic of Kazakhstan, where natural plague foci occupy up to 40% of the territory, the rapid growth of camel populations may significantly enhance epidemiological risks. The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive assessment of the role of camels in the epizootology and epidemiology of plague based on retrospective data (1907-2003) and contemporary monitoring (2000-2025), including spat

Changes in the endemic-epidemic pattern of malaria in Colombia, 1978-2021.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major global public health issue with varying epidemiologies across countries. In Colombia, it is a priority endemic-epidemic event included in the national public health policy. However, evidence demonstrating nationwide variations in the disease behavior is limited. This study aimed to analyze changes in the levels and distribution of endemic-epidemic malaria transmission in the eco-epidemiological regions of Colombia from 1978 to 1999 and 2000 to 2021. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive time-series study using official secondary data on malaria-associated morbid

Letter to Our Colleagues Family Practitioners, Geriatricians, and Radiologists to Increase Awareness Regarding Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) affects elderly individuals and is characterized by a progressive deterioration of gait, urinary continence, and cognition. In most cases, it is reversible with treatment. INPH is not uncommonly an unrecognized cause of dementia. We wish to raise awareness of iNPH among primary care providers who are seeing these patients first. METHODS: We reviewed the current epidemiological data regarding iNPH as well as epidemiological data regarding Alzheimer disease. We searched for the most sensitive radiological screening test for iNPH. RESUL

Clinical epidemiological characteristics of mycetoma in Eastern Sennar locality, Sennar State, Sudan.

Mycetoma epidemiological features remain uncharacterised. Few studies have been conducted in a community-based setting to explore the epidemiological features and risk factors for mycetoma in Sudan. To bridge this gap, this study was conducted in Eastern Sennar Locality, Sennar State, Sudan, to report the clinical, epidemiological characteristics of mycetoma patients and the disease burden in the state. We used cluster sampling; sixty villages were randomly selected across the locality's five administrative units, and a household-to-household survey was conducted. We collected data using pre-d

The methodology of population surveys of headache prevalence, burden and cost: principles and recommendations from the Global Campaign against Headache.

The global burden of headache is very large, but knowledge of it is far from complete and needs still to be gathered. Published population-based studies have used variable methodology, which has influenced findings and made comparisons difficult. Among the initiatives of the Global Campaign against Headache to improve and standardize methods in use for cross-sectional studies, the most important is the production of consensus-based methodological guidelines. This report describes the development of detailed principles and recommendations. For this purpose we brought together an expert consensu

Lung cancer and air pollution.

Epidemiologic studies over the last 40 years suggest rather consistently that general ambient air pollution, chiefly due to the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, may be responsible for increased rates of lung cancer. This evidence derives from studies of lung cancer trends, studies of occupational groups, comparisons of urban and rural populations, and case-control and cohort studies using diverse exposure metrics. Recent prospective cohort studies observed 30 to 50% increases in lung cancer rates associated with exposure to respirable particles. While these data reflect the effects of ex

Strategies for the prevention and control of Mpox: A review article.

Since its discovery in 1958, the orthopox monkeypox virus, a cause for mpox, has remained endemic in the African continent. Recently, a major epidemiological change in mpox virology is causing a global emergence. This review focuses on the novel mpox clades and explores transmission methods which are critical for public health measures and infection prevention.

Chlamydia trachomatis antibody detection in home-collected blood samples for use in epidemiological studies.

Capillary blood collected in serum tubes was subjected to centrifugation delay while stored at room temperature. Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) IgG concentrations in aliquoted serum of these blood samples remained stable for seven days after collection. CT IgG concentrations can reliably be measured in mailed blood samples in epidemiological studies.

Surveillance and control of Shigella sonnei infection.

Shigella sonnei infection continues to present a challenge to those responsible for the control of communicable disease. It is readily passed from one person to another by faecal-oral spread, particularly in children. Traditionally, control measures have emphasised hygienic precautions and exclusion of infected individuals from schools and nurseries. The extent to which these measures have been effective appears to be limited. This review of the literature and recent epidemiological data was conducted to identify interventions which contribute to the control of the infection without unjustifia
