Thyroid Eye Disease and its Vision-Threatening Manifestations in the Academy IRIS Registry: 2014-2018.

PURPOSE: To evaluate prevalence of thyroid eye disease (TED) and associated factors in the American Academy of Ophthalmology IRISⓇ Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight). DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of the IRIS Registry. METHODS: IRIS Registry patients (18-90 years old) were classified as TED (ICD-9: 242.00, ICD-10: E05.00 on ≥2 visits) or non-TED cases, and prevalence was estimated. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs) were estimated using logistic regression. RESULTS: 41,211 TED patients were identified. TED prevalence was 0.09%, showed a unimodal age distribution (h

Evaluation of the Latent Tuberculosis Care Cascade Among Public Health Clinics in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) elimination within the United States will require scaling up TB preventive services. Many public health departments offer care for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), although gaps in the LTBI care cascade are not well quantified. An understanding of these gaps will be required to design targeted public health interventions. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study through the Tuberculosis Epidemiologic Studies Consortium (TBESC) within 15 local health department (LHD) TB clinics across the United States. Data were abstracted on individuals receiving LTBI care duri

Improving Decision-Making for Population Health in Nonhealth Sectors in Urban Environments: the Example of the Transportation Sector in Three Megacities-the 3-D Commission.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) represent a significant global public health burden. As more countries experience both epidemiologic transition and increasing urbanization, it is clear that we need approaches to mitigate the growing burden of NCDs. Large and growing urban environments play an important role in shaping risk factors that influence NCDs, pointing to the ineluctable need to engage sectors beyond the health sector in these settings if we are to improve health. By way of one example, the transportation sector plays a critical role in building and sustaining health outcomes in urban

Incidence of Vestibular Schwannoma over the Past Half-Century: A Population-Based Study of Olmsted County, Minnesota.

Objective The absence of a centralized health system has limited epidemiologic research surrounding vestibular schwannoma (VS) in the United States. The Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP) comprises a unique medical consortium that covers a complete population of all ages in a well-defined geographic region over the past half-century. The objective of this study was to characterize the incidence of sporadic VS over this extended period. Study Design Population-based study. Setting Olmsted County, Minnesota. Subjects and Methods Review of all VSs diagnosed between January 1, 1966, and December

Low implementation of Xpert MTB/RIF among HIV/TB co-infected adults in the International epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) program.

OBJECTIVE: Xpert MTB/RIF is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the initial tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic test in individuals suspected of HIV-associated TB. We sought to evaluate field implementation of Xpert among a cohort of HIV/TB co-infected individuals, including availability, utilization and outcomes. DESIGN: Observational cohort study (patient-level data) and cross-sectional study (site-level Xpert availability data). METHODS: Data were collected at 30 participating International epidemiologic Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) sites in 18 countries from January 2012

Circumstances and contributing causes of fall deaths among persons aged 65 and older: United States, 2010.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether the increasing fall death rate among people aged 65 and older is due in part to temporal changes in recording the underlying cause of death. DESIGN: Analyses of multiple cause of death data using the online Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging ON-line Data for Epidemiologic Research system, which uses the National Center for Health Statistics' Multiple Cause of Death data set. SETTING: United States, 1999 to 2010. PARTICIPANTS: People aged 65 and older with a fall listed on their death record as the underlying or a contributing cause of de

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in Sistan and Baluchestan Province of Iran, a case-control study on epidemiological characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: Several cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), an arboviral disease, have been reported since summer 1999 in different areas of Iran. The main objectives of this research were to determine the most important means and patterns of transmission and the epidemiologic characteristics of this disease. DESIGN: In this population-based case-control study, 24 patients from Zabol and Zahedan Districts in the Sistan and Baluchestan province, reported to the Center for Disease Control of Iran, were compared with 300 controls. The controls were sampled through the 'probability propo

Risk of mortality among children, adolescents, and adults with autism spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and their first-degree relatives: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are childhood onset neurodevelopmental disorders that may persist into adulthood. ASD and ADHD tend to run in families and may have a significant negative impact on the health and longevity of those with the disorder and their relatives. The aim of this study will be to analyze the risk of mortality among children, adolescents, and adults with ASD or ADHD and their first-degree relatives. METHODS/DESIGN: We will conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. Searches of PubM

Cognition assessment using the NIH Toolbox.

Cognition is 1 of 4 domains measured by the NIH Toolbox for the Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function (NIH-TB), and complements modules testing motor function, sensation, and emotion. On the basis of expert panels, the cognition subdomains identified as most important for health, success in school and work, and independence in daily functioning were Executive Function, Episodic Memory, Language, Processing Speed, Working Memory, and Attention. Seven measures were designed to tap constructs within these subdomains. The instruments were validated in English, in a sample of 476 parti

[Visualization of period prevalence in dynamic populations: a teaching design and preliminary application].

There is a persistent inconsistency between the definition of period prevalence (PP) and its practical calculation, which poses a challenge in teaching epidemiology. This paper proposes a visual teaching design for a "three-tiered relationship diagram of disease duration, case numbers and population size within a dynamic population", based on a unified timeline. First, cases are classified into four categories according to the relationship between disease duration and the study period, with a clear distinction between new and pre-existing cases. Second, the person-time (area under the curve) i

Symptomatic non-stenotic carotid disease: current challenges and opportunities for diagnosis and treatment.

Symptomatic non-stenotic carotid plaques (SyNC) are an under-researched and under-recognized source of stroke. Various imaging markers of non-stenotic carotid plaques that are associated with stroke risk have been identified, but these causal relationships need to be confirmed in additional prospective studies. Currently, there exists neither a standardized SyNC definition nor a dedicated set of imaging protocols, although researchers have started to address these shortcomings. Moreover, many neuroradiologists are still unaware of the condition, and hence do not comment on high-risk plaque fea

Nutrition education and counselling provided during pregnancy: effects on maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes.

Nutrition education and counselling (NEC) is a commonly applied strategy to improve maternal nutrition during pregnancy. However, with the exception special populations and specific diets, the effect of NEC on maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes has not been systematically reviewed. Using a modified Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group method we systematically reviewed the literature and identified and abstracted 37 articles. We conducted meta-analyses for the effect of NEC on maternal, neonatal and infant health outcomes including gestational weight gain, maternal anaemia, birth
