The majority of ovarian tumors arise from the transformation of the ovarian surface epithelial cells, a single layer of cells surrounding the ovary. Patients with chlamydial and papillomaviral cervicitis show a significantly higher activity of the ectocervical epithelium which is particularly pronounced in papillomaviral infection. This is, however, matched by progressively reduced apoptosis of epithelial cells which in turn suggests the possibility of papillomaviruses and chlamydiae contributing to inhibition of infected cells and, thus, paving the way for development of precancer and cancer of cervix uteri.

Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) cells were isolated and recombined with ectomesenchymal cells in vitro utilizing extracellular matrix components as substrate. Haemophilus ducreyi is a sexually transmitted pathogen that causes genital ulcers and inguinal adenopathy. The finding of cytokeratin positivity in non-epithelial cells in 9/15 cases of performing or penetrating gastric ulcer is reported. Human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) with lens capsules were cultured to investigate the morphology and outgrowth potential of the cultured cells. Peritoneal fluid (PF) was obtained during the early follicular phase in 24 women at laparoscopy as part of infertility investigation. The cells present in PF were pelleted and cultured.
