Exploring applications of electrically evoked compound action potentials using the vestibulo-cochlear implant.

OBJECTIVES: Vestibulo-cochlear implants are a potential treatment approach for patients with loss of vestibular function. A critical aspect is the development of reliable and objective outcome measures, to assess their efficacy and optimize their performance. As in cochlear implant care and other neural prostheses, electrically evoked compound action potentials (eCAP) can be used to measure the neural response to implant stimulation. eCAPs might provide information about the presence and misalignment of the electrically evoked vestibulo-ocular reflex, and potential vestibulo-cochlear interacti

Cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials are not disturbed in hemifacial spasm and blepharospasm.

INTRODUCTION: Hemifacial spasm (HFS) and blepharospasm (BS) are movement disorders involving the facial muscles. HFS is linked to facial nerve, nucleus irritation and BS to basal ganglia dysfunction causing hyperexcitability of brainstem interneurons. Cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) responses demonstrate the saccullocollic reflex. This study aimed to evaluate saccullocollic pathways using the cVEMP test in HFS and BS patients with abnormal brainstem activity. METHODS: Our study was conducted between July 2022 and December 2023 at Movement Disorders Outpatient Clinic of N

Further characterisation of late somatosensory evoked potentials using electroencephalogram and magnetoencephalogram source imaging.

Beside the well-documented involvement of secondary somatosensory area, the cortical network underlying late somatosensory evoked potentials (P60/N60 and P100/N100) is still unknown. Electroencephalogram and magnetoencephalogram source imaging were performed to further investigate the origin of the brain cortical areas involved in late somatosensory evoked potentials, using sensory inputs of different strengths and by testing the correlation between cortical sources. Simultaneous high-density electroencephalograms and magnetoencephalograms were performed in 19 participants, and electrical stim…

Identifying Intraoperative Spinal Cord Injury Location from Somatosensory Evoked Potentials' Time-Frequency Components.

Excessive distraction in corrective spine surgery can lead to iatrogenic distraction spinal cord injury. Diagnosis of the location of the spinal cord injury helps in early removal of the injury source. The time-frequency components of the somatosensory evoked potential have been reported to provide information on the location of spinal cord injury, but most studies have focused on contusion injuries of the cervical spine. In this study, we established 19 rat models of distraction spinal cord injury at different levels and collected the somatosensory evoked potentials of the hindlimb and extrac…

Brainstem evoked auditory potentials in tinnitus: A best-evidence synthesis and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Accumulating evidence suggests a role of the brainstem in tinnitus generation and modulation. Several studies in chronic tinnitus patients have reported latency and amplitude changes of the different peaks of the auditory brainstem response, possibly reflecting neural changes or altered activity. The aim of the systematic review was to assess if alterations within the brainstem of chronic tinnitus patients are reflected in short- and middle-latency auditory evoked potentials (AEPs). METHODS: A systematic review was performed and reported according to the PRISMA guidelines. Studi…

Global motion evoked potentials in autistic and dyslexic children: A cross-syndrome approach.

Atypicalities in psychophysical thresholds for global motion processing have been reported in many neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism and dyslexia. Cross-syndrome comparisons of neural dynamics may help determine whether altered motion processing is a general marker of atypical development or condition-specific. Here, we assessed group differences in N2 peak amplitude (previously proposed as a marker of motion-specific processing) in typically developing (n = 57), autistic (n = 29) and dyslexic children (n = 44) aged 6-14 years, in two global motion tasks. High-density EEG data we

The effect of Glibenclamide on somatosensory evoked potentials after cardiac arrest in rats.

BACKGROUND: Science continues to search for a neuroprotective drug therapy to improve outcomes after cardiac arrest (CA). The use of glibenclamide (GBC) has shown promise in preclinical studies, but its effects on neuroprognostication tools are not well understood. We aimed to investigate the effect of GBC on somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) waveform recovery post CA and how this relates to the early prediction of functional outcome, with close attention to arousal and somatosensory recovery, in a rodent model of CA. METHODS: Sixteen male Wistar rats were subjected to 8-min asphyxia CA a

Added value of somato-sensory evoked potentials amplitude for prognostication after cardiac arrest.

AIMS: Bilateral absence of cortical somato-sensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) robustly predicts poor outcome after cardiac arrest (CA), but it is uncertain if SSEP amplitudes provide additional information. Here, we examined the prognostic value of cortical SSEP amplitude in comparison with other known outcome predictors. METHODS: We retrospectively determined SSEP amplitudes in a prospective CA registry, identified an amplitude cut-off for worst Cerebral Performance Category (CPC) within three months, and examined correlations of SSEP amplitude with pupillary light reflex (PLR), myoclonus, pe…
