Prenatal and Postnatal Ocular Abnormalities Following Congenital Zika Virus Infections: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: To assess fetal and neonatal eyes abnormalities and their progression during the last ZIKV outbreak and summarize learned lessons. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by a team of obstetricians and ophthalmologists. RESULTS: Studies reporting ocular abnormalities during the prenatal (n = 5) and postnatal (n = 24) periods were included in the analysis. In the prenatal period, the most common ocular findings were intraocular calcification cases (4/6, 66.6%) and microphthalmia (3/6, 50%). Postnatal ocular abnormalities of congenital ZIKV infection were descri

An 18-Year Overview of Serratia marcescens Ocular Infection.

PURPOSE: Serratia marcescens is a frequent ocular bacterial pathogen implicated in keratitis, endophthalmitis, and conjunctivitis. We evaluated the risk factors and treatment outcomes of ocular infections due to S. marcescens. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, all S. marcescens-positive cases between February 2002 and February 2020 were reviewed for ocular risk factors that included log of minimal angle of resolution visual acuity (VA), medical management, and time to epithelial defect closure. RESULTS: Fifty-one patients were identified (72.5% females, 46.8±23.3 years). Fo

Ocular toxoplasmosis: the role of retinal pigment epithelium migration in infection.

Our aim was to study the migration of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) into the retinal layer during infection of C57BL/6 mice with Toxoplasma gondii. Eyes from infected and non-infected animals were analyzed on the 60th day of infection by light and transmission electron microscopy. Non-infected eyes showed a normal morphology. In contrast, we observed free parasites in the retinal vasculature, the presence of mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate (MNII) and parasites in the vasculature of choroids in infected eyes. No inflammatory infiltrate was observed; RPE cells were identified near the M

External Ophthalmomyiasis: A Comprehensive Review and Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment.

External ophthalmomyiasis is an acute parasitic infection resulting from the infestation of ocular surface tissues by larvae of the order Diptera. It occurs more frequently in tropical and subtropical regions with inadequate sanitation, particularly among individuals in close contact with livestock. Patients often present with severe ocular irritation, including foreign body sensation, redness, pain, and increased lacrimation; severe cases may develop complications such as keratitis or intraocular involvement. Diagnosis primarily relies on the direct visualization of larvae under slit-lamp mic

Ocular and Periorbital Manifestations of Molluscum Contagiosum: A 20-year Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to conduct a systematic review of publications from the past 20 years on the ocular and periorbital manifestations and complications of molluscum contagiosum (MC), as well as to discuss common diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. BACKGROUND: MC is a common skin infection with rare ocular manifestations. These presentations are primarily in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) and adults with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Though rare, ophthalmologists must recognize ocular manifestations early to prevent comp

Identification and characterization of two novel viruses in ocular infections in reindeer.

A thorough understanding of virus diversity in wildlife provides epidemiological baseline information about pathogens. In this study, eye swab samples were obtained from semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifertarandus tarandus) in Norway during an outbreak of infectious eye disease, possibly a very early stage of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC). Large scale molecular virus screening, based on host nucleic acid depletion, sequence-independent amplification and next-generation sequencing of partially purified viral nucleic acid, revealed the presence of a new papillomavirus in 2 out of 8 eye

The ocular manifestations of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease (with its ocular manifestations) is a worldwide disorder that is rapidly increasing in frequency. It is a treatable, multisystemic disease that presents in three stages of severity. It can present with unusual forms of conjunctivitis, keratitis, cranial nerve palsies, optic nerve disease, uveitis, vitritis, and other forms of posterior segment inflammatory disease. A patient with any of these ocular manifestations should be questioned for exposure to an area endemic for Lyme disease, tick bites, skin rash, or arthritis. Such patients should undergo serological testing. If the clin

A survey of thelazia worms in the eyelids of British cattle.

Thelazia skrjabini and T gulosa were found in the eyes of 237 of 566 bovine heads (41.9 per cent) examined in a Surrey abattoir during 1976. The prevalence of infection increased during late June, July and August, when a new generation of worms emerged in eyes. The burden in eyes ranged from one to 170 worms, with a mean count of 10.44 +/- 3.23. Worms were found behind and in third eyelids and in the lacrimal ducts of lower eyelids, which makes their detection very difficult by clinical examination. They were significantly more common in cattle 21 to 38 months old than in those less than 21 mo

[Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery of Exposure Keratopathy in the Intensive Care Unit].

Critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) may develop eye problems, due to impaired ocular protective mechanisms or direct involvement of the eye in severe systemic diseases. If eye infections or ocular surface disorders are not identified in time, endophthalmitis or corneal ulcer may develop and can cause permanent functional injuries of the eye. A retrospective analysis was performed and a total of 283 complete intensive care courses of treatment were evaluated, taking into account ophthalmic medical consultations for frequent cardinal symptoms. The most common cardinal sympto…

[A case of primary herpetic eye disease].

Herpetic eye disease is very common. However, primary infections are most frequently asymptomatic. We report herein a case of a 15-year-old male whose diagnosis of primary herpetic infection was delayed and who initially had unsuitable treatment that aggravated the symptoms. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis of primary herpetic infection, which allows an adapted therapeutic care.

Mycotic keratitis caused by Curvularia brachyspora (Boedjin). A report of the first case.

Curvularia brachyspora has been identified for the first time as a cause of mycotic keratitis. Mycotic infections of the eye have assumed increasing importance in ophthalmology, resulting in a need for fungal identification and early specific treatment for the successful management of cases. A case of mycotic keratitis caused by C. brachyspora is described against the background of other Curvularia species causing mycoses.
