This study reports the case of a 55-year-old woman with diabetes with a necrotizing fasciitis of the right lower limb and the perineum, first admitted at the emergency department for septic shock with cardiac arrest, and later transferred to the department of surgery. Microbiological and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis caused by Acinetobacter baumannii. A broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy was administered and later readjusted according to the results of microbiological culture. Intensive hemodynamic support was required. Wounds were dressed daily

OBJECTIVE: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection. Clinicalfeatures and microbial knowledge will help reduce mortality and morbidity from delayed diagnosis and treatment.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: From January 2004 to December 2009, records of 222 necrotizing fasciitis patients were reviewed for the study. The following data were collected and recorded: age, sex, location of lesion, inciting event, clinical manifestation, culture and sensitivity and procedures.
RESULTS: The male-to-female ratio was 1.4:1 with 56.3 years mean age. The most of the occupations were elde

Two cases of sudden and unexpected death due to necrotizing fasciitis are presented with a short overview of this rare disease with special reference to pathological features and causative and epidemiological factors. One case occurred as a complication of liposuction surgery, and the second presented after minor trauma. Based on the autopsy findings and an interdisciplinary approach, medico-legal evaluation provides a substantial basis for later court hearings in such cases.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw is an uncommon consequence of biphosphonate therapy. This has most commonly been a bone complication with little if any soft tissue involvement. An unusual case of necrotizing fasciitis with extensive soft tissue infection stemming from a prolonged case of osteonecrosis of the jaw presented. The management of this patient (aggressive surgical debridement and prolonged wound care) is reviewed as well as the review of the underlying processes.

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an aggressive and relatively rare soft tissue infection, involving the fascia and the subcutaneous tissue, with a rapidly fatal evolution.
CASE REPORT: GE, an 8 year-old girl presented with edema and redness of the external genitalia. Twelve hours later, she became toxic while her redness extended in the abdominal wall and both upper thighs. CT of the abdomen was consistent with NF. She underwent prompt surgery (debridement and colostomy), followed by plastic reconstruction.
CONCLUSION: Early suspicion and prompt aggressive surgery is the key of th

Necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall is rare and associated with high mortality. Herein we present a patient with necrotizing fasciitis who was managed successfully with aggressive surgical debridement combined with an aeration system that provided effective aeration and drainage of the infected tissues.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, often fatal, soft tissue infection involving any of the layers of soft tissue. Although rare, cases continue to be reported among patients with impariments of the immune system, such as in diabetics. We present the case of a 53-year-old obese, female, diabetic patient who presented to the Emergency Department at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg with necrotizing fasciitis and was subsequently surgically treated.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an uncommon but serious infection of fascia and skin associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. One modality proposed for improving the outcome of this condition is hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy. This is a form of medical treatment that involves intermittent inhalation of 100% oxygen under pressures exceeding the atmosphere. The aim of this article is to review current practice and evidence for the use of HBO as adjunctive therapy in the management of NF.
METHODS: A survey of published English literature through searches of Medline and Pu

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate patients who developed necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in the lower extremity secondary to diabetic wounds.
METHODS: The study included sixteen patients (11 men, 5 women; mean age 63 years; range 50 to 82 years) who were treated for NF arising from diabetic wounds. Associated diseases were coronary heart disease in three patients, and chronic renal failure due to diabetic nephropathy in three patients. The patients were evaluated by physical examination, direct radiographs, blood pressure measurements, and cultures, and with respect t

Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening, fulminant disease that is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Presenting with a triad of findings including progressive erythema, severe dermatological edema and severe pain disproportionate to the physical findings, this disease is a surgical emergency. Delayed diagnosis and surgical debridement lead to higher mortality. Early extensive surgical debridement, aggressive antibiotic therapy, invasive monitoring and intensive care management determine the outcome in most cases. In patients who fail to demonstrate clinical improvement, profound seps

We describe a patient with a history of asthma and remote use of steroids the development of necrotizing fascitis due to Vibrio alginolyticus after an injury from a coral reef during bathing in the Caribbean Sea off Colombia. The patient recovered with aggressive surgical debridement and antibiotics.

Monobacterial necrotizing fasciitis is a rare form of soft tissue infection usually caused by the group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus. Soft tissue infection is an uncommon clinical manifestation of invasive disease due to Streptococcus pneumoniae. We describe 3 cases of pneumococcal necrotizing fasciitis and explore potential pathogen-specific mechanisms of pathogenesis. The clinical characteristics of necrotizing fasciitis due to S. pneumoniae and group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus appear to overlap. The similarities include predominant occurrence in elderly adults with underlying chronic

Necrotizing fasciitis is a limb- and life-threatening soft-tissue infection that frequently involves the extremities. This article describes the first case of necrotizing fasciitis developing from a single steroid injection of the greater trochanteric bursa. Despite early resuscitation and aggressive surgical management that included a hip disarticulation, the patient expired. Potential contributing factors are reviewed.
