Beyond Nutrients: NOVA-Defined Dietary Patterns in Crohn's Disease and Healthy Adults.

Background: Diet quality and food processing patterns are increasingly recognized as important determinants of Crohn's disease (CD) risk and disease outcomes; however, direct comparisons with healthy populations using integrated nutrient- and processing-based frameworks remain limited. Therefore, we aim to quantify ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption using the NOVA classification, compare UPF intake between CD patients and healthy controls, and assess its association with diet quality indices. Methods: Baseline dietary intake data were analyzed from two randomized controlled trial cohorts:

Inhibition of calpain-mediated HMGB1 alleviates cardiac inflammation and dysfunction induced by ultra-processed foods.

Increased consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is a risk factor for metabolic disorder-associated heart failure (HF). Here, we demonstrate that UPF-induced calpain-1 aggravated oxidative stress, thereby increasing high mobility group box 1-mediated (HMGB1-mediated) myocardial inflammation, which contributes to cardiac dysfunction. After illustrating the dysregulated inflammatory pathways in human and murine hearts upon metabolic stress, we revealed an increase in calpain-1 alongside profound oxidative stress and inflammation in the failing myocardium. Mechanistically, in neonatal rat ca

Relationship between 39 dietary markers of ultra-processed food and incident depression: evidence from the prospective UK Biobank cohort study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between the intake of markers of ultra-processed food (MUPs) and incident depression. METHODS: This population-based, prospective cohort study included 171,818 participants, who completed at least one Oxford WebQ. Cox proportional hazard regression models for incident depression were applied, incorporating the consumption of ten MUP categories and 39 specific MUPs, assessed as percentage of total food intake (%TFI), using penalised cubic splines. The hazard ratio (HR)-nadir was defined as the lowest HR on the %TFI axis and rescaled to 1. RESULTS: Across a

Long-term trends and patterns in ultra-processed food consumption among Korean adults from 1998 to 2022.

Ultra-processed foods are linked to adverse health outcomes, making it crucial to monitor consumption trends. Despite rising consumption due to Westernized diets in Asia, long-term studies targeting Asian adults are lacking. Thus, we analyzed ultra-processed food consumption trends among Korean adults from 1998 to 2022. Additionally, we compared intakes before and during the pandemic to evaluate the potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, we compared the nutrient profiles of ultra-processed and non-ultra-processed food group intakes. This study used data from the Korea National

Generalized anxiety disorder is associated with the consumption of ultra-processed foods and eating behaviors markers in university students.

Brazilian university students face significant health challenges, with over one-third exceeding a healthy weight and Brazil experiencing the highest global prevalence of anxiety. We hypothesized that screening positive for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) would be associated with increased intake of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and unfavorable eating behaviors in this population. This cross-sectional study included 5,946 students (aged 18-59 years) from 94 Brazilian universities. GAD prevalence was assessed using the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), while dietary markers and

Prevalence and molecular characterization of multidrug-resistant Shigella species of food origins and their inactivation by specific lytic bacteriophages.

Shigella spp. can be isolated from various food sources and is responsible for many outbreaks and sporadic cases of foodborne diseases worldwide. Although Shigella species are known as one of the major foodborne pathogens, a few studies have characterized the prevalence and molecular basis of antibiotic resistance of Shigella spp. isolated from food origins. This study investigated the prevalence of Shigella spp. in a wide range of food samples (1400 samples), and the phenotypic and genotypic basis of antimicrobial resistance of the isolates. In addition, the potential of two Shigella specific

Venous Thromboembolism Risk Assessment in Prolonged Fasting During Ramadan: The Global Ramadan Free Thrombosis Project.

Background Fasting during the month of Ramadan is practiced by over a billion Muslims worldwide. This religious observance, which involves complete abstention from food and fluids during daylight hours, may contribute to dehydration and increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), particularly in hot climates. Despite this theoretical concern, limited clinical evidence exists on the actual incidence and risk of VTE associated with prolonged fasting. This study aimed to assess the risk of VTE in fasting individuals during Ramadan using the Caprini risk assessment model and propose a proph

Supersized America: help your patients regain control of their weight.

With 64-ounce sodas and "supersized" fast food on nearly every street corner, America has become the land of the obese. Despite disheartening statistics regarding the success of weight-loss plans, patients are more likely to take steps to lose weight if encouraged to do so by their primary care physician.

Ethanolic extract of Spondias tuberosa inner bark administration during pregnancy reduces body weight in Wistar rat dams submitted to a low-protein diet.

Maternal low-protein diet can lead to hyperglycemia and the ethanolic extract from the inner bark of Spondias tuberosa Arruda (umbu) can be an alternative to mitigate this effect. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of maternal low-protein diet with ethanolic extract of umbu inner bark during pregnancy. Pregnant Wistar rats were fed control or low-protein diet until lactation. Animals were randomly assigned on one of three groups: control diet containing 19% of protein (n=6); low-protein diet containing 9% of protein (n=6); or low-protein diet and umbu extract (n=6), 500mg via gava

Serum uric acid may be a mediator of risk factors in metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, we have witnessed a sharp growth of metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). How to achieve early prevention of MASLD is imminent. We aimed to determine the dietary pattern and other factors influencing MASLD, to explore whether it mediated by serum uric acid (SUA) or not. METHODS: A total of 4,038 adults attending the Health Management Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University between October 2018 and May 2019 were surveyed using a questionnaire and underwent physical measurements. Development of a cross-over randomized trial method to determine the acceptability and safety of novel ready-to-use therapeutic foods.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a method for determining the acceptability and safety of ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) before clinical trialing. Acceptability was defined using a combination of three consumption, nine safety, and six preference criteria. These were used to compare a soy/maize/sorghum RUTF (SMS-RUTFh), designed for the rehabilitation of human immunodeficiency virus/tuberculosis (HIV/TB) wasted adults, with a peanut-butter/milk-powder paste (P-RUTF; brand: Plumpy'nut) designed for pediatric treatment. METHODS: A cross-over, randomized, controlled trial was conducted in Kenya. Ten

Amylin level and gastric emptying in obese children: before and after weight loss.

Amylin is a neuroendocrine hormone that inhibits food intake and gastric emptying in animal studies. Its role in obese human beings is still controversial. We aimed to estimate the fasting and postprandial amylin levels in obese children before and after weight loss [through weight loss intervention program (WLIP)] and to relate these levels to the lipid profile, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and ultrasonography gastric half emptying time (t1/2). This study was conducted initially on 20 obese children, 10 of them only continued 6 months follow up strategy on WLIP

Sex Differences in Liver, Adipose Tissue, and Muscle Transcriptional Response to Fasting and Refeeding in Mice.

Fasting is often used for obesity correction but the "refeeding syndrome" limits its efficiency, and molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic response to different food availability are under investigation. Sex was shown to affect hormonal and metabolic reactions to fasting/refeeding. The aim of this study was to evaluate hormonal and transcriptional responses to fasting and refeeding in male and female C57Bl/6J mice. Sex asymmetry was observed both at the hormonal and transcriptional levels. Fasting (24 h) induced increase in hepatic Fgf21 gene expression, which was associated with elevation

Changes in human gut microbiota composition are linked to the energy metabolic switch during 10 d of Buchinger fasting.

Fasting is increasingly popular to manage metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Despite the role that the human gut microbiota plays in health and diseases, little is known about its composition and functional capacity during prolonged fasting when the external nutrient supply is reduced or suppressed. We analysed the effects of a 10-d periodic fasting on the faecal microbiota of fifteen healthy men. Participants fasted according to the peer-reviewed Buchinger fasting guidelines, which involve a daily energy intake of about 1046 kJ (250 kcal) and an enema every 2 d. Serum biochemistry confirmed

Rapid renal potassium adaptation in rats.

The possibility that renal K adaptation, defined as the increased capacity to excrete an intravenous K load, can occur within hours of intake of a normal K ration was examined in fed and fasted rats. Rats maintained on a 12-h light-dark cycle were fed either a standard diet (fed rats) or had food removed before the onset of the dark phase to prevent the early dark phase ingestion (fasted rats). Four hours into the dark phase, fed and fasted rats were infused intravenously with 0.143 M KCl, while control fed and fasted rats did not receive any KCl. The initial urinary K excretion rate (UKV, 5.6

Acute effects of fever, fasting and aspirin on infant rat gastric mucosa.

Clinical experience shows that young children with gastrointestinal bleeding have frequently had some preceding febrile illness for which aspirin was administered. Febrile young children often have poor food or liquid intake, or have been in a fasting state because of diarrhea, vomiting or anorexia. The objective of this study was to determine the acute effects of fever, fasting and oral aspirin administration on the gastrointestinal mucosa. One hundred and sixty-eight infant rats, from 21 to 28 days of age and weighting from 70 to 120 g were studied. Random assignment was made to eight groups
