Body fat and other metabolic effects of atazanavir and efavirenz, each administered in combination with zidovudine plus lamivudine, in antiretroviral-naive HIV-infected patients.

BACKGROUND: Protease inhibitor treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals has been linked to the development of lipodystrophy. The effects of atazanavir on body fat distribution and related metabolic parameters were examined in antiretroviral-naive patients. METHODS: HIV-positive patients with CD4 cell counts > or = 100 cells/mm3 were randomized to 1 of 2 treatment arms: (1) atazanavir, 400 mg given once daily, plus efavirenz placebo; or (2) efavirenz, 600 mg given once daily, plus atazanavir placebo; each drug was administered with fixed-dose zidovudine (300 mg) and

Photoperiodic regulation of the phospholipid molecular species composition in thoracic muscles and fat body of Pyrrhocoris apterus (Heteroptera) via an endocrine gland, corpus allatum.

In the conventional view, the winter adaptation of membrane lipids is induced by temperature decrease. We propose that winter remodelling of membranes in Pyrrhocoris apterus is triggered by short-day photoperiod before the temperature decrease and changes caused by cold temperature represent the later phase of adaptation. The induction of diapause by short-day photoperiod results in an accumulation of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) molecular species with C(16:0)/C(18:2) acyl chains esterified to sn-1/sn-2 positions of glycerol at the expense of C(18:0)/C(18:2). Proportions of C(16:0)/C(18:2)-PE

Absolute Aerobic Capacity Predominates over Body Composition and Regional Anthropometry in Explaining Maximal Fat Oxidation in National-Team Collegiate Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Maximal fat oxidation (MFO) is the highest rate of fat oxidation attained during incremental exercise, with cardiorespiratory fitness being its primary correlate. How body composition and regional anthropometry explain MFO variability remains poorly understood. While fat-free mass is a known correlate, regional morphology, such as skinfold-corrected girth, has been proposed to capture local muscle mass contributions. However, MFO is an absolute rate (g·min-1) whereas peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak, typically mL·kg-1·min-1) is conventionally reported relative to body mass. The statisti

Cross sectional analyses indicated that body fat distribution was not associated with performance-based and self-reported outcomes among ambulatory people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is cited as a relevant factor in multiple sclerosis (MS). To date, there is inconsistent evidence regarding the relationship between total body fat and frequently studied outcomes in MS. Body fat distribution, or the location of adipose tissue and depots within the body, may represent a biologically meaningful correlate of MS-related outcomes. PURPOSE: This exploratory study assessed whether dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-based body fat distribution metrics were associated with performance-based and self-reported outcomes of MS. METHODS: Fifty-seven ambulatory adu

A novel polyphenol-rich combination of 5 plant extracts prevents high-fat diet-induced body weight gain by regulating intestinal macronutrient absorption in mice.

Global prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes are rapidly increasing to pandemic proportions. A novel supplement composed of 5 plant extracts from olive leaf, bilberry, artichoke, chrysanthellum, and black pepper was designed to prevent type 2 diabetes development in people at risk. It was previously shown to improve body weight and glucose control in preclinical rodent models, with these effects being accompanied by increased fecal energy excretion and in vitro inhibition of several digestive enzymes. Thus, we hypothesized that, in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD), a single dose of this bota

Inducible Systemic Gcn1 Deletion in Mice Leads to Transient Body Weight Loss upon Tamoxifen Treatment Associated with Decrease of Fat and Liver Glycogen Storage.

GCN1 is an evolutionarily-conserved ribosome-binding protein that mediates the amino acid starvation response as well as the ribotoxic stress response. We previously demonstrated that Gcn1 mutant mice lacking the GCN2-binding domain suffer from growth retardation and postnatal lethality via GCN2-independent mechanisms, while Gcn1-null mice die early in embryonic development. In this study, we explored the role of GCN1 in adult mice by generating tamoxifen-inducible conditional knockout (CKO) mice. Unexpectedly, the Gcn1 CKO mice showed body weight loss during tamoxifen treatment, which gradual

Comparison of 7-site skinfold measurement and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for estimating body fat percentage and regional adiposity in Taiwanese diabetic patients.

Obesity and regional adiposity are important risk factors for cardiometabolic disorders. The aim of this study is to compare 7-site skinfold (SF) measurement to dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as the reference method for estimating body fat percentage (BF%) and regional adiposity in diabetic outpatients. A total of 59 diabetic patients (36 females and 23 males) aged 28.5-78 years (median 67.7 years) with BMI 18.8-40.6 kg/m2 (median: 25.5 kg/m2) were enrolled. 7-site skinfold measurement and DXA were performed at the same visit day and biochemistry data were collected. Our results demons

Association between changes in body fat distribution, biochemical profile, time of HIV diagnosis, and antiretroviral treatment in adults living with and without virus infection.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals living with HIV seem to be more prone to changes in the redistribution of body fat, characterized as lipodystrophy, which may occur in conjunction with metabolic diseases. In the present study, such impacts were assessed in adults with and without HIV and associated with the time of virus diagnosis and treatment with antiretroviral. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 123 adults, in which 87 had HIV and 36 without HIV, of both sexes, in outpatient follow-up at the Specialized Care Service (SAE) in Macaé-RJ. The following were made: 1) Alteration in body fat distribut

Total homocysteine is positively correlated with body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and fat mass among overweight reproductive women: A cross-sectional study.

Conflicting associations between total homocysteine (tHcy), body mass index (BMI) lean body mass, and fat mass in the general population have been reported. We investigated the hypothesis that elevated tHcy levels are associated with increased BMI, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and body fat mass percent. In Jordan, obesity and overweight are prevalent among reproductive women and hyperhomocysteinemia, along with obesity and overweight, are independent risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. The participants used in this cross-sectional study were 325 overweight Jordanian women aged between 18 an

A 12-week intervention with nonivamide, a TRPV1 agonist, prevents a dietary-induced body fat gain and increases peripheral serotonin in moderately overweight subjects.

SCOPE: A bolus administration of 0.15 mg nonivamide has previously been demonstrated to reduce energy intake in moderately overweight men. This 12-week intervention investigated whether a daily consumption of nonivamide in a protein-based product formulation promotes a reduction in body weight in healthy overweight subjects and affects outcome measures associated with mechanisms regulating food intake, e.g. plasma concentrations of (an)orexigenic hormones, energy substrates as well as changes in fecal microbiota. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nineteen overweight subjects were randomly assigned to eith

Resistive exercises, with or without whole body vibration, prevent vertebral marrow fat accumulation during 60 days of head-down tilt bed rest in men.

Fat accumulates in the bone marrow of lumbar vertebrae with bed rest. Exercise with or without whole body vibration may counter this effect. Our objectives were to measure 1) the vertebral fat fraction (VFF) of men subjected to bed rest who performed resistive exercises with (RVE, n = 7) or without whole body vibration(RE, n = 8) or no exercise (CTR, n = 9) using three MRI techniques; and 2) changes in peripheral blood counts. Twenty-four healthy men (age: 20-45 yr) underwent -6° head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest for 60 days. MRI was performed using three techniques (fat saturation, proton spectro

Independent and combined associations of body mass index and visceral fat area with kidney function decline in a healthy Japanese urban population: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has been linked to progressive loss of kidney function, but the independent and combined associations of body mass index (BMI) and visceral fat accumulation remain uncertain in healthy individuals. This study aimed to clarify the longitudinal relationship between BMI, visceral fat area (VFA), and chronic kidney disease (CKD), defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate based on serum cystatin C (eGFRcys) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m² among the Kobe Study participants targeting healthy urban residents in Japan. METHODS: A total of 897 participants (267 men, 630 women) without C

Association of the TyG index and its body fat distribution composites with CHD and MACE risk in adults with OSAHS: incremental discrimination and exploratory mediation analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is closely associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) and adverse cardiovascular outcomes, but the comparative value of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and its body fat distribution composites for cardiovascular risk stratification in OSAHS remains unclear. METHODS: We assessed the associations of TyG, TyG-weight-adjusted waist index (TyG-WWI), TyG-Chinese visceral adiposity index (TyG-CVAI), and TyG-body roundness index (TyG-BRI) with prevalent CHD and incident major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in adults with OSA

Short-term MRI Follow-up and Thin-layer PDWI Sequence without Fat Suppression for Detecting Cartilage Loose Bodies: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) is an idiopathic process and can progress from stable to cartilage fragmentation with the formation of loose bodies in the affected joint capsule. Loose bodies in the knee may wear out the articular cartilage, tendons, and ligaments, leading to a series of problems, such as joint locking, bouncing, joint effusion, and meniscus tear; therefore, early recognition and treatment of intraarticular loose bodies are important to achieve favorable long-term outcomes. CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old male presented with a 1-month history of right knee discomfort.

The association of general obesity, central obesity and visceral body fat with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: Evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Studies consistently reported that general obesity predicts gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, whether other phenotypes of obesity such as central obesity and visceral adiposity might have differential associations as risk factors of GDM are less known. The objective of this study was to investigate the association of all these obesity phenotypes in developing GDM. METHODS: PubMed, CINHAL, Embase, Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of Science were searched.
