Father Involvement, Dating Violence, and Sexual Risk Behaviors Among a National Sample of Adolescent Females.

This study explored the relationship between the involvement of biological fathers and the sexual risk behaviors and dating violence/victimization and/or perpetration of adolescent girls. The data used in this cross-sectional analysis were drawn from the second wave of the public release of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Only adolescents who reported their biological sex as female, reported a history of being sexually active, and reported having a romantic partner in the previous 18 months were selected (N = 879). This study focused on overall positive sexual behaviors a

Short-term psychoanalytic child therapy for anxious children: a pilot study.

Few studies report treatment outcome for early childhood internalizing disorders following psychotherapy, especially psychodynamic techniques. We aimed to investigate effectiveness of a novel, developmentally appropriate, short-term psychodynamic treatment program for 4- to 10-year-olds with anxiety disorders in an outpatient setting. We conducted a quasi-experimental wait-list controlled study. Thirty children (12 females) with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) anxiety disorders and their families received 20-25 sessions of manualized short-term Psychoanalytic Chi

Promoting parent-child relationships and preventing violence via home-visiting: a pre-post cluster randomised trial among Rwandan families linked to social protection programmes.

BACKGROUND: Sugira Muryango is a father-engaged early child development and violence-prevention home-visiting programme delivered by trained lay workers. This cluster-randomised trial evaluates whether families living in extreme poverty (Ubudehe 1, the poorest category in the Government of Rwanda's wealth ranking) who receive Sugira Muryango in combination with a government-provided social protection programme demonstrate greater responsive, positive caregiving, nutrition, care seeking, hygiene, and father involvement compared with control families receiving usual care (UC). METHODS: Using de

Psychogenic factors in kidney transplant rejection: a case study.

The author examines the influence of psychic factors on kidney transplant rejection in a patient who suffered emotional trauma. As an adolescent, this man had reacted to the death of his father with an incomplete mourning response and had coped with the loss through identification and a search for surrogates. The death of a paternal surrogate immediately preceded the transplant rejection. The author emphasizes that the establishment of a causal relationship between a somatic event and a psychic antecedent is facilitated by demonstrating that a latent conflict has been evoked symbolically by an

Interplay between childhood maltreatment, parental bonding, and gender effects: impact on quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine associations between childhood adversity, parental bonding, gender, depressive symptoms, and quality of life in non-treatment-seeking adults from the community. METHOD: Effects of differential parental rearing were compared in adults who reported a high degree of childhood maltreatment (n=72) and those who reported no significant adverse events in childhood (n=69). Subjects completed retrospective measures of childhood maltreatment and perceived parenting style, as well as measures of current depressive symptoms and quality of life. RESULTS: Th

Familial Presentation of a Rare NCKAP1 Splice-Site Variant Associated With a Neurodevelopmental Disorder and Cutaneous Manifestations.

Pathogenic variants in NCKAP1, a gene encoding a core component of the WAVE regulatory complex (WRC), have recently been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), but the clinical spectrum remains incompletely characterized. We describe a father and daughter carrying a novel heterozygous NCKAP1 splice-site variant (c.2021+1G>A), both presenting with developmental delay, autistic features, epilepsy, and shared craniofacial dysmorphisms. Although familial cases have been previously reported, this is the first to present thorough phenotypic documentation, including longitudinal neurodeve

Factors related to the comorbidity between oppositional defiant disorder and anxiety disorders in preschool children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to identify factors related to comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and anxiety disorders (ADs). DESIGN: A sample of 622 children was assessed longitudinally at 3 and 5 years of age. METHODS: At baseline, there were 310 boys (49.8%), most participants were of Caucasian-white ethnicity (89.1%) and attended to public school (64.0%), and families' socioeconomic status was 64.3% medium-high, 14.1% medium and 20.5% medium-low. Children diagnosed with ODD and/or AD were selected: n = 103 at 3 years of age (44 ODD, 42 AD and 17 ODD + AD) an

Mosaicism for a pathogenic MFN2 mutation causes minimal clinical features of CMT2A in the parent of a severely affected child.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) refers to a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders which cause a peripheral motor and sensory neuropathy. The overall prevalence is 1 in 2500 individuals. Mutations in the MFN2 gene are the commonest cause for the axonal (CMT2) type. We describe a Caucasian 5-year old girl affected by CMT2A since the age of 2 years. She presented with unsteady gait, in-turning of the feet and progressive foot deformities. Nerve conduction studies suggested an axonal neuropathy and molecular testing identified a previously reported pathogenic variant c.1090C > T, p.(Arg36

Is there a relationship between parental self-reported psychopathology and symptom severity in adolescents with anorexia nervosa?

The current study aimed to screen for indications of psychopathology displayed by the parents of adolescents diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), and examine the relationship between severity of adolescent eating disorder symptoms and parental psychopathology. Sixty female adolescents diagnosed with DSM-IV-TR AN (restricting-type and binge-purge-type) were administered the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE) and parents completed the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R). As compared to established non-patient norms, both fathers and mothers of adolescents with AN reported greater levels of o

Parental occupation, occupational exposure to solvents and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and risk of childhood brain tumors (Italy, France, Spain).

The role of parental occupational exposure in childhood brain tumors was investigated in a population-based case-control study grouping 251 cases and 601 controls from three European centers: Milan (Italy), Paris (France), and Valencia (Spain). Parental occupational exposure to solvents and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) during the five-year period before birth was estimated using a job-exposure matrix developed earlier in the same countries. Odds ratios (OR) of brain tumors for each occupation and occupational exposure were estimated by logistic regression, adjusting for child's age,

Different, difficult or distinct? Mothers' and fathers' perceptions of temperament in children with and without intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Can ratings of temperament be a way of identifying young children with intellectual disabilities (ID) who are at risk for being experienced as difficult? We aimed to explore parents' reports of temperament in their young children with or without ID, as well as positive and negative impact of the child on parents. METHOD: Mothers and fathers of 55 children recently diagnosed with ID and 183 age-matched typically developing (TD) children completed the EASI Temperamental Survey and two scales of the Family Impact Questionnaire measuring positive and negative impact of the child on pa

"Mother's child" and "father's child" among twins. A longitudinal twin study from pregnancy to 21 years age, with special reference to development and psychiatric disorders.

234 pairs of twins were studied from pregnancy up to 21 years of age on the basis of records from maternity hospitals, neonatal wards and children's health centres and questionnaires filled in by the parents when the twins were aged 2-10 and 12-21 years, and by the twins themselves at age 12-21. 74 twins were personally interviewed about human relationships in their families and with the Present State Examination (PSE) at age 15-21. When the evaluation of parental preference was made by the parents, the mother's favourites had learned to speak earlier and were more often the psychic leader of

Co-design of interventions and services with structurally marginalized populations in the context of maternal and early childhood primary care: a rapid scoping review.

AIM: To synthesize evidence on approaches used in the co-design of maternal and early childhood primary care interventions with structurally marginalized populations. BACKGROUND: Involving end-users when developing health interventions can enhance outcomes. There is limited knowledge on how to effectively engage structurally marginalized populations (i.e., groups that are affected by structural inequities resulting in a disproportionate burden of social exclusion and poor health) when co-designing maternal child primary care interventions. METHODS: A rapid scoping review was conducted by sea

Assessing primary Tokophobia among Lebanese childless men and nulliparous women: psychometric validation of the Arabic versions of the fathers' fear of childbirth scale and Tokophobia severity scale.

INTRODUCTION: Tokophobia is an intense and pathological fear of pregnancy and childbirth. Despite its significance, no research in Lebanon has investigated primary tokophobia within the general population. Nevertheless, it is crucial to assess the attitudes of both women and men, as potential future parents, towards pregnancy and childbirth, particularly during these challenging times for the Lebanese population. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Tokophobia Severity Scale (TSS) and Fathers' Fear of Childbirth Scale (FFCS) for assessing primary tokophobia

Individuals with numerical and structural variations of sex chromosomes: interdisciplinary management with focus on fertility potential.

Diagnosis and management of individuals who have differences of sex development (DSD) due to numerical or structural variations of sex chromosomes (NSVSC) remains challenging. Girls who have Turner syndrome (45X) may present with varying phenotypic features, from classical/severe to minor, and some remain undiagnosed. Boys and girls who have 45,X/46,XY chromosomal mosaicism may have Turner syndrome-like features and short stature; therefore, unexplained short stature during childhood requires karyotype analysis in both sexes, particularly if characteristic features or atypical genitalia are pr

Parental occupational exposure to pesticides and risk of childhood cancer in Switzerland: a census-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pesticide exposure is a suspected risk factor for childhood cancer. We investigated the risk of developing childhood cancer in relation to parental occupational exposure to pesticides in Switzerland for the period 1990-2015. METHODS: From a nationwide census-based cohort study in Switzerland, we included children aged < 16 years at national censuses of 1990 and 2000 and followed them until 2015. We extracted parental occupations reported at the census closest to the birth year of the child and estimated exposure to pesticides using a job exposure matrix. Cox proportional hazards m
