Incidence and diversity of circoviruses, polyomaviruses, and adenoviruses in exotic free-roaming rosy-faced lovebirds from Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

Free-roaming rosy-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) were first documented in the greater Phoenix area (Arizona, USA) in the mid-1980s and have since established small populations. In blood and cloacal swab samples from 69 lovebirds at four locations, we identified the presence of beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), aves polyomavirus (APyV), and psittacine adenovirus 5 (PsAdV-5). Additionally, we identified a novel aviadenovirus, hereby referred to as psittacine adenovirus 12 (PsAdV-12). PsAdV-12 is most closely related to members of the species Aviadenovirus senegalense and Aviadenovi

Health parameters for wild Carnaby's cockatoo (Zanda latirostris) nestlings in Western Australia: results of a long-term study.

The collection of baseline health data is an essential component of an endangered species conservation program. As for many wildlife species, there are minimal health data available for wild populations of the endangered Carnaby's cockatoo (Zanda latirostris). In this study, 426 wild Carnaby's cockatoo nestlings were sampled from nine breeding sites throughout the range of the species over an 11-year period. In addition to a physical examination, samples were collected to test for hematologic and biochemical parameters, psittacine beak and feather disease virus (BFDV), avian polyomavirus (APV)

Direct (non-vector) transmission of West Nile virus in geese.

During a recent epizootic, losses due to West Nile virus (WNV) infection in young goose flocks were estimated to be far greater than expected if mosquito-borne transmission was the principal route of infection. Contact transmission was investigated experimentally as an alternative explanation. A group of 10, 3-week-old geese were inoculated subcutaneously and placed in one insect-proof room with 20 geese of the same age. A group of 10 geese were housed in an adjacent insect-proof room to serve as an environmental control. All geese in the inoculated group produced antibodies, eight became vira

SFMBT2 regulates plumage color via serum metabolites in Chinese Anyi tile-like gray chickens.

Plumage color is an important characteristic of chicken breeds, and molecular genetic research is significant for resource conservation and product quality control. Anyi tile-like gray chicken is a high-quality local chicken breed resource generated through long-term natural selection and artificial breeding in China. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying plumage color formation in Anyi tile-like gray chickens remain unclear. In this study, nontargeted liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was performed to identify serum metabolites associated with plumage color

Frequency of goose and duck down causation of hypersensitivity pneumonitis within an 80-patient cohort.

BACKGROUND: A variety of antigens have been identified as causative of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), which is characterized by inflammation to the lung parenchyma that is induced by exposure. Goose and duck down (GDD) bedding is often overlooked by physicians as a potential cause, yet the use of GDD has markedly increased in recent years, paralleling an increased frequency of reports of GDD-induced HP. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of GDD as the causative antigen in patients with HP who use bedding that contains GDD. METHODS: Patients referred with a working diagnosis of HP unde

Direct delivery of adenoviral CRISPR/Cas9 vector into the blastoderm for generation of targeted gene knockout in quail.

Zygotes at the 1-cell stage have been genetically modified by microinjecting the CRISPR/Cas9 components for the generation of targeted gene knockout in mammals. In the avian species, genetic modification of the zygote is difficult because its unique reproductive system limits the accessibility of the zygote at the 1-cell stage. To date, only a few CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene knockouts have been reported using the chicken as a model among avian species, which requires 3 major processes: isolation and culture of primordial germ cells (PGCs), modification of the genome of PGCs in vitro, and injecti

Mapping of panda plumage color locus on the microsatellite linkage map of the Japanese quail.

BACKGROUND: Panda (s) is an autosomal recessive mutation, which displays overall white plumage color with spots of wild-type plumage in the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). In a previous study, the s locus was included in the same linkage group as serum albumin (Alb) and vitamin-D binding protein (GC) which are mapped on chicken (Gallus gallus) chromosome 4 (GGA4). In this study, we mapped the s locus on the microsatellite linkage map of the Japanese quail by linkage analysis. RESULTS: Segregation data on the s locus were obtained from three-generation families (n = 106). Two microsatellit

Recovery and refining of Au by gold-cyanide ion biosorption using animal fibrous proteins.

Animal fibrous proteins (AFPs) such as egg-shell membrane (ESM), chicken feather (CF), wool, silk, or elastin are an intricate network of stable and water-insoluble fibers with high surface area and are abundant bioresources. Every AFP tested was found to accumulate gold-cyanide ion from aqueous solutions in high yield, depending on pH and some other parameters. Gold-cyanide ion is adsorbed by AFP at low pH range, with maximum binding observed at approx pH 2.0. Under the certain conditions, gold-cyanide ion was accumulated up to 8.6, 7.1, 9.8, 2.4, and 3.9% of dry weight on ESM, CF, wool, silk

Pigeon fanciers' lung: the mucin antigen is present in pigeon droppings and pigeon bloom.

BACKGROUND: Pigeon intestinal mucin has been implicated as an important antigen pigeon fanciers' lung. This study investigated whether mucin is detectable in pigeon droppings and bloom, the likely antigenic sources in disease. METHODS: Soluble extracts of a number of materials found in a pigeon loft were prepared and specific IgG subclass antibodies to these antigens were measured in 14 antibody-positive pigeon fanciers. Cross-reactivity between these materials and purified pigeon intestinal mucin was investigated by inhibition of anti-mucin ELISA. Mucin was purified from the soluble extracts

Delayed Clinical Onset of Congenital Heart Disease in a Geriatric Macaw (Ara ararauna).

An approximately 33-year-old male blue and gold macaw (Ara ararauna) was presented for postmortem examination after dying without premonitory signs at the owner's home. The bird had a recent history of a grade II/VI left-sided systolic murmur, feather-destructive behavior, was overweight, and had bilateral cataracts. Gross and microscopic postmortem examinations revealed a subaortic interventricular septal saccular defect most compatible with a diverticulum intimately associated with a multifocally fibrotic right coronary aortic semilunar cusp, and its distended sinus. The resulting congestive

Dietary supplementation with apigenin ameliorates intestinal injury in broilers suffering from necrotic enteritis.

This study examined how dietary apigenin supplementation influences growth performance, intestinal barrier integrity, and immune response in broilers affected by necrotic enteritis. A total of 144 one-day-old white-feathered broilers were divided into six groups. The NE model groups were inoculated with Eimeria maxima on day 14 and Clostridium perfringens (CP) on days 17-23. With the exception of the NE and NC groups, all other groups received dietary intervention with apigenin from day 24 to day 28. The results demonstrated that NE significantly reduced average daily gain (ADG) and feed conve

Versatile Keratin Fibrous Adsorbents with Rapid-Response Shape-Memory Features for Sustainable Water Remediation.

Biodegradable shape-memory polymers derived from protein substrates are attractive alternatives with strong potential for valorization, although their reconstruction remains a challenge due to the poor processability and inherent instability. Herein, based on Maillard reaction and immobilization, a feather keratin fibrous adsorbent featuring dual-response shape-memory is fabricated by co-spinning with pullulan, heating, and air-assisted spraying ZIF-8-NH2. Maillard reaction between the amino group of keratin and the carbonyl group of pullulan improves the mechanics and thermal performance of t

External and gastrointestinal parasites of the Franklin's Gull, Leucophaeus pipixcan (Charadriiformes: Laridae), in Talcahuano, central Chile.

Parasitological studies of the Franklin's gull, Leucophaeus pipixcan, are scarce, and knowledge about its endoparasites is quite limited. In order to describe its parasitic community, a total of 60 Franklin's gulls were captured in the coastal area in central Chile, using modified Bal-chatri traps. Ectoparasites were collected from all 60 live individuals through inspection of their plumage, while 30 were examined for endoparasites by standard parasitological necropsy. The prevalence of ectoparasites was 78.3%, including the feather mite Zachvatkinia larica (43.3%) and four species of lice: Ac

Network Effects of Demographic Transition.

Traditional human societies use two of biology's solutions to reduce free-riding: by collaborating with relatives, they rely on the mechanism of kin-selection, and by forming highly clustered social kin-networks, they can efficiently use reputation dynamics. Both of these solutions assume the presence of relatives. This paper shows how social networks change during demographic transition. With falling fertility, there are fewer children that could be relatives to one another. As the missing kin are replaced by non-kin friends, local clustering in the social network drops. This effect is compou

Marek's disease virus immunosuppression alters host cellular responses and immune gene expression in the skin of infected chickens.

Marek's disease virus (MDV), a highly cell-associated lymphotropic α-herpesvirus, is the causative agent of Marek's disease (MD) in domestic chickens. MDV replicates in chicken lymphocytes and establishes a latent infection within CD4+ T cells. The latently infected CD4+ T cells carry the virus to visceral organs, peripheral nerves, and feather follicle epithelium (FFE). FFE is the only anatomical site where infectious enveloped cell-free virus particles are produced and disseminated into the environment. This study investigated the immunological responses and mechanism of viral-induced immuno

Outbreak of Marek's disease in a vaccinated broiler breeding flock during its peak egg-laying period in China.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of Marek's disease (MD), caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV), primarily occur in 10-12-week-old hens. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of MD in a breeding flock of 24-30-week-old vaccinated broilers in China. The clinical signs in the affected chickens appeared at 24 weeks, and the incidence of tumours peaked at 30 weeks. The morbidity and mortality of the hens were 5 % and 80 %, respectively. Hematoxylin-eosin staining of the tissues showed the typical characteristics of MD. MDV infection was confirmed in the hens with an agar gel diffusion precipitation assay for

Surveillance for West Nile virus in American white pelicans, Montana, USA, 2006-2007.

West Nile virus (WNV)-associated deaths of American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) chicks have been recognized at various nesting colonies in the United States since 2002. We evaluated American white pelican nesting colonies in Sheridan County, Montana, USA, for an association between WNV-positive pelican carcasses and human West Nile neuroinvasive disease. Persons in counties hosting affected colonies had a 5x higher risk for disease than those in counties with unaffected colonies. We also investigated WNV infection and blood meal source among mosquitoes and pelican tissue type for
