Clinical guidance for the use of nasogastric tube feeding under restraint in eating disorders care: a systematic scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Persistent dietary restriction can result in people with eating disorders becoming so severely physically and mentally compromised that they are considered a risk to their own life. In these circumstances, individuals may be subjected to involuntary treatments, including nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding under restraint. This systematic scoping review identifies and assesses the evidence available to healthcare professionals to inform clinical practice decisions related to NGT feeding under restraint in eating disorder care, and highlights gaps in knowledge to be addressed in future r

Establishing normative physiological values among breastfeeding infants in Malawi for the development of a pneumonia dysphagia risk score.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is the leading infectious cause of death in children under 5 years of age in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with most deaths among infants. In children with pneumonia, aspiration events have been implicated in fatalities; however, physiological data on normative infant feeding patterns and validated techniques for detecting dysphagia and aspiration risk in LMICs are lacking. We aimed to establish a baseline of normative physiological and behavioural feeding-related variables in healthy, well, breastfeeding infants in Malawi to begin developing dysphagia risk sc

Effects of Pacifier Use on Transition Time from Gavage to Breastfeeding in Preterm Infants: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nonnutritive sucking (NNS) has been identified as having many benefits for preterm infants. NNS may improve the efficacy of oral feeding, reduce the length of time spent in orogastric (OG) tube feeding, and shorten the length of hospital stays for preterm infants. AIM: This study aimed to assess the effect of pacifiers on preterm infants in the transition from gavage to oral feeding, their time to discharge, weight gain, and time for transition to full breastfeeding. METHODS: A prospective, randomized controlled trial was conducted in our center. Ninety infants were randomized in

ADEPT - Abnormal Doppler Enteral Prescription Trial.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancies complicated by abnormal umbilical artery Doppler blood flow patterns often result in the baby being born both preterm and growth-restricted. These babies are at high risk of milk intolerance and necrotising enterocolitis, as well as post-natal growth failure, and there is no clinical consensus about how best to feed them. Policies of both early milk feeding and late milk feeding are widely used. This randomised controlled trial aims to determine whether a policy of early initiation of milk feeds is beneficial compared with late initiation. Optimising neonatal feeding fo

The Effect of Mobile Health Intervention on Prelacteal Feeding Among Mothers in the First Month After Birth in South Ethiopia: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Introduction: Prelacteal feeding, the practice of giving newborns substances other than breast milk within the first few days of life, remains a common yet harmful practice in many low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. No evidence in Ethiopia indicates that mHealth can help improve prelacteal feeding. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mobile health (mHealth) intervention on reducing prelacteal feeding practices and improving antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) utilization among mothers in South Ethiopia. Methods: A cluster-randomized controlled trial (CRT) wa

Infant feeding decisions among people living with human immunodeficiency virus in the United States: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: The benefits of breastfeeding for the lactating person and infant have been well established; however, for those living with HIV, the option to provide human milk has been contraindicated. In January 2023, the US national guidance was revised so breastfeeding can be supported through a shared decision-making process for virally suppressed individuals living with HIV. Few research studies have explored maternal experiences related to infant feeding decisions among people living with HIV (PWH) in the US. METHODS: A qualitative, modified critical ethnographic method was used to con

Proinflammatory state and metabolic dysregulation linking delayed feeding progression to extrauterine restricted head growth in extremely preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Growth of head circumference is critically associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes. Extrauterine growth restriction of head circumference from birth to term-equivalent age is linked to impaired neurodevelopment. This study examined whether a proinflammatory state and metabolic dysregulation characterize the association between delayed feeding progression and extrauterine restricted head growth in extremely preterm infants. METHODS: This cohort study included infants born ≤ 28 weeks' gestation between 2019 and 2021. Feeding progression trajectories, categorized as improvement o
