The use of kinetically robust chromium(III) fluorido complexes as synthons for mixed 3d-4f clusters is reported. The tendency toward linear {Cr(III)-F-Ln(III)} units dictates the cluster topology. Specifically, we show that reaction of cis-[Cr(III)F(2)(NN)(2)]NO(3) (NN = 1,10-phenanthroline ("phen") or 2,2'-bipyridine ("bpy")) with Ln(NO(3))(3)·xH(2)O produces isostructural series of molecular {Ln(2)Cr(2)} squares (1-9) with linear fluoride bridges. In a parallel fashion, fac-[Cr(III)F(3)L], where L = N,N',N″-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane ("Me(3)tacn"), reacts with Nd(NO(3))(3)·6H(2)O to f

Silicon(II) fluoride is unstable; therefore, isolation of the stable species is highly challenging and was not successful during the last 45 years. SiF(2) is generally generated in the gas phase at very high temperatures (~1100-1200 °C) and low pressures and readily disproportionates or polymerizes. We accomplished the syntheses of stable silicon(II) fluoride species by coordination of silicon(II) to transition metal carbonyls. Silicon(II) fluoride compounds L(F)Si·M(CO)(5) {M = Cr (4), Mo (5), W(6)} (L = PhC(NtBu)(2)) were prepared by metathesis reaction from the corresponding chloride with M

A wide selection of insoluble nanoparticulate metal salts was screened for avid binding of [(18)F]-fluoride. Hydroxyapatite and aluminium hydroxide nanoparticles showed particularly avid and stable binding of [(18)F]-fluoride in various biological media. The in vivo behaviour of the [(18)F]-labelled hydroxyapatite and aluminium hydroxide particles was determined by PET-CT imaging in mice. [(18)F]-labelled hydroxyapatite was stable in circulation and when trapped in various tissues (lung embolisation, Subcutaneous and intramuscular), but accumulation in liver via reticuloendothelial clearance w

BACKGROUND: Caries (dental decay) is a disease of the hard tissues of the teeth caused by an imbalance, over time, in the interactions between cariogenic bacteria in dental plaque and fermentable carbohydrates (mainly sugars). The use of fluoride toothpaste is the primary intervention for the prevention of caries.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the relative effectiveness of fluoride toothpastes of different concentrations in preventing dental caries in children and adolescents, and to examine the potentially modifying effects of baseline caries level and supervised toothbrushing.

Non-invasive fluorescence imaging is an important technique in biology. However, detection of traditional biomarker emissions is accompanied by a high background signal. In this study we examined whether upconversion sodium yttrium fluoride (NaYF(4)) nanocrystals were suitable for autofluorescence-free multicolor fluorescence imaging in a living animal. Tissue autofluorescence was induced with a 405 nm light source, then rats were subjected to injection of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide (CdSe/ZnS) quantum dots (QDs), or NaYF(4):ytterbium/thulium (Yb(3+)/Tm(3+)

The fluorescence emission of CdSe/ZnS QDs was switched "off" when the native trioctylphosphine oxide ligands were exchanged for 1-(bis(eta(5)-cyclopentadienyl)iron)-methyl-3-(5,7-dimercapto-heptyl)-urea (); importantly, the emission of the resulting conjugate was switched "on" upon addition of fluoride ions.

We report on the synthesis of alkynyl ruthenium colorimetric sensors whose receptors are constituted by thiazolidinedione, rhodanine, or barbituric heads as recognition centers for anions. As modifications in the charge density at these recognition centers affect the whole molecule, through the alkynyl ligand acting as a communicating wire, the effects of hydrogen-bonding interactions with the anions were observed with the naked eye and monitored by UV-vis absorption spectrometry. The selectivity of the sensors was improved through electronic modifications of the alkynyl ruthenium subunit: the

A series of micro2-fluoro-bridged heteronuclear bidentate Lewis acid complexes [K(18-crown-6)THF]+ [Fc(BMeF)(SnMe2Cl)F]- (1-2F), [K(18-crown-6)THF]+ [Fc(BMeF)(SnMe2F)F]- (1-3F), [K(18-crown-6)THF]+ [Fc(BMePh)(SnMe2Cl)F]- (2-F), and [K(18-crown-6)THF]+ [Fc(BMePh)(SnMe2F)F]- (2-2F) (Fc=1,2-ferrocenediyl) was prepared. Compounds 2-F and 2-2F were obtained as a mixture of diastereomers, which arise due to the generation of a stereocenter at boron in addition to their inherent planar chirality. All compounds have been studied in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and by mu

This study was carried out to assess the fluoride concentration in groundwater in some villages of northern Rajasthan, India, where groundwater is the main source of drinking water. Water samples collected form deep aquifer based hand-pumps were analysed for fluoride content. Fluoride in presently studied sites was recorded in the ranges of 4.78 and 1.01 mg/l. The average fluoride concentration for this region was recorded 2.82 mg/l. As per the desirable and maximum permissible limit for fluoride in drinking water, determined by WHO or by Bureau of Indian Standards, the groundwater of about 95

Fluoride alters the expression and post-translational modifications of extracellular matrix proteins in dentin. The aim of our study was to determine the effects of fluoride on type I collagen expression during the early stages of tooth germ development in rats. Pregnant dams were divided into three groups and fed a standard diet. From the fifth day of pregnancy the three groups received tap water with, respectively, trace amounts of fluoride (C), a low fluoride concentration (FL) or and a high fluoride concentration (FH). Changes in type I collagen expression and distribution were evaluated.

A study was conducted to examine the feasibility of estimating the global burden of disease due to fluoride in drinking water. Skeletal fluorosis is a serious and debilitating disease which, with the exception of one area in China, is overwhelmingly due to the presence of elevated fluoride levels in drinking water. The global burden of disease due to fluoride in drinking water was estimated by combining exposure-response curves for dental and skeletal fluorosis (derived from published data) with model-derived predicted drinking water fluoride concentrations and an estimate of the percentage po

The present study was undertaken for the determination of fluoride ions in drinking water at the BALCO, Korba region by the ion selective electrode method. The ground water samples of thirty four villages of this region were collected. The fluoride concentration values varied from 1.07 ppm to 3.10 ppm. In this area, villagers were found suffering with dental and skeletal fluorosis. The villagers were suggested to use alum, lime and Nalgonda technique to avoid all type of fluorosis. It was found that fluoride was present within the permissible limit (1.5 ppm) in most of the villages studied but

Fluoride-releasing materials placed over carious tissue are assumed to enhance remineralisation of the underlying lesion. This remineralisation, however, also depends on the availability of calcium and phosphate, which may be supplied by the pulpal fluid. The aim of this study was to measure the fluoride release of glass ionomer cements (GICs) into underlying dentin and to measure the effect of the released fluoride on the remineralisation of the underlying dentinal lesions using transversal microradiography. Discs of fluoride-releasing GIC were placed on top of dentinal lesions in an in vitro

BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a two-week clinical study to determine the remineralizing effect of an experimental mouthrinse containing both fluoride and essential oils in an intraoral caries test model.
METHODS: The study used an observer-blinded, randomized, controlled, 3 x 3 crossover design. The authors enrolled in the study 153 subjects, each of whom had a mandibular removable partial denture. Two partially demineralized human enamel specimens were mounted on each subject's removable partial denture. Subjects used either a fluoride mouthrinse with essential oils (the test mouthrinse)

INTRODUCTION: Trace elements are known to influence bone metabolism; however, their effects may be exacerbated in renal failure because dialysis patients are unable to excrete excess elements properly. Our study correlated bone quality in dialysis patients with levels of bone fluoride, magnesium, and aluminum. A number of studies have linked trace elements, including fluoride, magnesium, and aluminum, to the development of renal osteodystrophy (ROD). However, little is known about the relationship between trace elements and changes in bone quality in ROD patients. The purpose of this study was

This study examined the effect of sodium fluoride, a water pollutant important through the world, including India, on testicular steroidogenic and gametogenic activities in relation to testicular oxidative stress in rats. Sodium fluoride treatment at 20mg/kg/day for 29 days by oral gavage resulted in significant diminution in the relative wet weight of the testis, prostate, and seminal vesicle without alteration in the body weight gain. Testicular delta(5),3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) and 17beta-HSD activities were decreased significantly along with significant diminution in plasma

Pulp tissue reactions to a fluoride-releasing all-in-one resin bonding system (Reactmer Bond and Reactmer Paste) in non-exposed monkey teeth were histopathologically evaluated at three, 30, and 90 days after restoration. No serious inflammatory reactions of the pulp, such as necrosis or abscess formation, were observed. At 90 days in the Reactmer group, odontoblastic change and inflammatory cell infiltration were not observed, and slight irritation dentin formation was formed. The pulpal response of the Reactmer group was minimally different from that of the control group. Consequently, the Re

A single oral dose of sodium fluoride (NaF) in aqueous solution was given to male Wistar rats. Twenty-four-hour urine samples were collected and examined to evaluate fluoride-induced acute renal damage. The following parameters were measured in 24-h urine: urine volume and urinary excretion of fluoride, N-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase (NAG), alpha-glutathione-S-transferase (alpha-GST), and creatinine (CR). Fluoride exposure produced specific, dose-dependent changes of these parameters. Significant increases of fluoride and fluoride-induced polyuria were observed. NAG as specific marker of prox

The combustion of high fluoride-content coal as an energy resource for heating, cooking, and food drying is a major exhaust emission source of suspended particulate matter and fluoride. High concentrations of these pollutants have been observed in indoor air of coal-burning families in some rural areas in China. Because airborne fluoride has serious toxicological properties, fluoride pollution in indoor air and the prevalence of fluorosis have been analyzed in a fluorosis area and a healthy nonfluorosis area in China and in a rural area in Japan. For human health, fluoride in indoor air has no
