Folate and colo-rectal cancer risk.

The UK Food Standards Agency convened a group of expert scientists to review current research investigating folate and colo-rectal cancer risk. The workshop aimed to examine current research and establish research priorities. The timing of folate exposure with respect to carcinogenesis, as well as the dose and form of folate, were considered key issues for future research. Also, the need to study further the influence of genetically defined subgroups was highlighted for future research.

Severe folate deficiency mimicking HELLP syndrome--report of two cases.

Severe folate deficiency in pregnancy may mimick HELLP syndrome as there are similar features in both. Proper diagnosis is important as far as the prognosis and management are concerned. Two cases of severe folate deficiency occuring in multigravid women mimicking HELLP syndrome are reported below with review of literature.

What happens to the microspherocytosis of hereditary spherocytosis in folate deficiency?

The case is presented of an elderly man in whom hereditary spherocytosis (HS) had been diagnosed many years previously. He also had diverticulitis and was referred because of increasing anaemia (Hb 7.7 g/dl). He was suffering from diarrhoea and anorexia, and was taking a very poor diet. Serum investigations showed low folate and vitamin B12 levels. His blood film, despite the history of HS, showed very few spherocytes, and the red cell osmotic fragility curve was virtually normal. Instead, the blood film showed normocytes and oval macrocytes, mostly with normal central pallor. He was treated w

Blood thiamine and blood folate levels. A comparative study in control, alcoholic and folate-deficient subjects.

A group of 85 patients underwent serum, red blood cell (RBC) folate and whole blood thiamine determinations. The group was divided into three subgroups: 1) a control group (41 patients who had no neurological or mental disorders which could be attributable to a vitamin deficiency); 2) a subgroup of folate-deficient patients (29 Ss) who had folate-responsive neuropsychiatric symptoms and 3) 15 alcoholic patients. There was no significant correlation between blood thiamine levels on one hand and serum and RBC folate on the other in the entire group. Alcoholic patients showed significant lower wh

Serum and erythrocyte folates in combined iron and folate deficiency.

A high incidence of iron and folate deficiency was found in 80 female subjects living in a private institution. Iron therapy in individuals with low serum iron values resulted in a significant increase in hemoglobin levels. An improvement in serum and RBC folate levels was also found following iron therapy but this could not be attributed to treatment since a similar increase was observed in untreated control subjects, probably due to an increased dietary intake of folates during the study period. In subsequent studies small amounts of pteroylglutamic acid were given to all patients and their

[Obstetric problems followed by stroke].

Obstetrical problems sometimes portend manifestations of atherosclerosis, as illustrated by two case reports. The first patient had the combination of hyperhomocysteinaemia due to chronic vitamin deficiencies in the diet, and smoking. The second was also a smoker and had a genetically determined mild hyperhomocysteinaemia, aggravated by chronic vitamin deficiencies resulting from poor dietary habits; she also had an increased folic acid requirement because of use of anti-epileptic drugs in combination with a familial predisposition for premature atherosclerotic manifestations. The first patien

The minimum vitamin requirements of the L and HeLa cells in tissue culture, the production of specific vitamin deficiencies, and their cure.

SEVEN VITAMINS HAVE TO DATE PROVED ESSENTIAL FOR THE SURVIVAL AND MULTIPLICATION OF A MOUSE FIBROBLAST (STRAIN L) AND A HUMAN CARCINOMA CELL (STRAIN HELA) IN TISSUE CULTURE: choline, folic acid, nicotinamide, pantothenic acid, pyridoxal, riboflavin, and thiamin. It was necessary to cultivate the cells for 5 to 15 days in a medium lacking the specific vitamin before the deficiency became apparent in the cessation of multiplication and the development of specific cytopathogenic effects. In their early stages these changes could be reversed by the addition of the missing vitamin, an in vitro, "cu

Metabolism of inorganic arsenic in mice carrying the human AS3MT gene and fed folate deficient or folate supplemented diet.

Arsenic (+3 oxidation state) methyltransferase (AS3MT) catalyzes the S-adenosylmethionine (SAM)-dependent methylation of inorganic arsenic (iAs), yielding monomethyl‑arsenic (MAs) and dimethyl‑arsenic (DMAs) metabolites. The formation of DMAs in this pathway is considered a key mechanism for iAs detoxification. Availability of SAM for iAs methylation depends in part on dietary intake of folate. Results of population studies suggest that supplementation with folate stimulates iAs methylation, increasing DMAs and decreasing iAs and MAs proportions in urine and/or blood. The goal of the present s

Folate deprivation induced neuroinflammation impairs cognition.

Nutritional status is associated with many neurocognitive diseases. Folate is one of the micronutrients, and its deficiency is associated with clinical outcomes of neurological diseases. Nevertheless, molecular mechanism behind the folate deficiency induced neurological disorders are not well-known. We have hypothesized that folate-deficiency is a cardinal determinant responsible for manifestation of cognitive impairment through inflammation mediated neurodegenerative pathologies. Objective of the current study was to assess whether folate deficiency is associated with cognitive dysfunction or

An infantile case of hereditary folate malabsorption with sudden development of pulmonary hemorrhage: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary folate malabsorption-a rare disorder caused by impairment of the folate transporter-can develop into severe folate deficiency manifesting as megaloblastic anemia and occasionally thrombocytopenia. Reportedly, megaloblastic anemia can manifest with hemorrhagic episodes, possibly due to ineffective platelet production and platelet dysfunction. However, life-threatening hemorrhage events in hereditary folate malabsorption have not been well investigated. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-month-old Japanese boy was transferred to our hospital due to thrombocytopenia and severe megalob

Cerebral folate deficiency: Analytical tests and differential diagnosis.

Cerebral folate deficiency is typically defined as a deficiency of the major folate species 5-methyltetrahydrofolate in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the presence of normal peripheral total folate levels. However, it should be noted that cerebral folate deficiency is also often used to describe conditions where CSF 5-MTHF is low, in the presence of low or undefined peripheral folate levels. Known defects of folate transport are deficiency of the proton coupled folate transporter, associated with systemic as well as cerebral folate deficiency, and deficiency of the folate receptor alpha, lea

[Folate deficiency as a differential diagnosis to severe pre-eclampsia].

In this case report, a 26-year-old pregnant woman presented with headache, visual disturbances, mega-loblastic anaemia, thrombocytopenia and proteinuria in her third trimester. These symptoms were initially misinterpreted as HELLP-syndrome, but due to normal blood pressure and liver function the patient was diagnosed with severe folate deficiency despite her daily supplements of folate to avoid neural tube defects and deficiency. The reason was onset of coeliac disease during pregnancy. Careful examination may help discriminate HELLP-syndrome from folate deficiency and thus avoid preterm deliv

Red Blood Cell Folate Insufficiency among nonpregnant Women of Childbearing age in Guatemala 2009 to 2010: Prevalence and predicted Neural Tube Defects risk.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recently released recommendations stating that red blood cell (RBC) folate concentrations should be above 400 ng/L (906 nmol/L) for optimal prevention of folate-sensitive neural tube defects (NTDs). The objective of this study was to determine the distribution of folate insufficiency (FI) (<906 nmol/L) and potential risk of NTDs based on RBC folate concentrations among nonpregnant women of child-bearing age in Guatemala. METHODS: A national and regional multistage cluster probability survey was completed during 2009 to 2010 among Guatemalan women of c
