[Influence of premenstrual syndrome and oral contraceptive effects on food choice during the follicular and luteal phase of the menstrual cycle].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Food intake and motivation for food varies according to the phase of the menstrual cycle. These changes seem to be more marked in women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and may be modified by the use of oral contraceptives (OC). This study examined the effect of menstrual cycle, PMS and OC use on the intake and hedonic rating of sweet and savory snack foods. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-five women were recruited and assigned to either a PMS group or a control group. In addition, based on OC use, the women were assigned to an OC-user or non-user group. During the lutea

Host-feeding patterns of potential mosquito vectors in Connecticut, U.S.A.: molecular analysis of bloodmeals from 23 species of Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, Coquillettidia, Psorophora, and Uranotaenia.

We evaluated the blood-feeding patterns in several mosquito species that may serve as vectors of disease agents in the northeastern United States. Blood-fed mosquitoes were collected from 91 different sites throughout Connecticut over a 6-yr period (June-October 2002-2007), and the host-feeding patterns of 23 mosquito species representing six genera were examined by using a polymerase chain reaction-based assay and sequencing portions of the cytochrome b gene of mitochondrial DNA. This study was part of a statewide surveillance program and for some of the mosquito species a limited number of s

[Host feeding preferences of sandflies in rural area, Southern Brazil].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fauna and host feeding preferences of sandflies as for domestic animals in an endemic area of American cutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODS: The sandflies collections were carried out from 8:00 pm to 12:00 am in an area 40 meters away from one of the residences in a farm in Southern Brazil, between January and April, 2004. Collection was performed using four Falcão light traps, placed 5 m apart from each other beside a cage, each one of them containing an animal bait (swine, dog, rabbit, and chicken). RESULTS: A total of 1,697 specimens of sandflies were collected a

Factors related to nonadherence to low sodium diet recommendations in heart failure patients.

BACKGROUND: A low sodium diet is a cornerstone of nonpharmacologic therapy for heart failure patients. Although nonadherence is common, little is known about why heart failure patients fail to adhere to this diet. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of heart failure patients in following a low sodium diet. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study with a convenience sample of 20 participants. Interviews were conducted and analyzed for themes. The data reflected three primary themes about nonadherence to the low sodium diet: lack of knowledge,

Pharmacological studies of alcohol susceptibility and brain monoamine function in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) and stroke-resistant spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSR).

Differences of alcohol drinking behavior, brain dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) levels and releases in the striatum were investigated in stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) and age-matched stroke-resistant spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSR). Voluntary alcohol (EtOH) consumption in SHRSP rats increased at 1 and 2 hours in the 4 hour time access. In the DA level, SHRSP showed decreases in the caudate-putamen (C/P) and dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) compared with in SHRSR. 5-HT levels in the C/P, ventral tegmental area-subtantia nigra (V/S) and DRN of the SHRSP were decreased

Genetics of alcoholism: rapid development of a new high-ethanol-preferring (HEP) strain of female and male rats.

A genetically based animal model of alcoholism has been developed in a relatively short period of 3 years. The new strain is characterized by an intense preference for ethanol over water as well as unique behavioral, neurochemical and other attributes. This new strain, termed high-ethanol-preferring (HEP) rats, was derived initially from selective cross-breeding of a variant strain of female Harlan Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats with the outbred Wistar line of male ethanol-preferring (P) rats. In this study, drinking patterns of both genders were obtained over 10 days by presenting water and ethanol

Opioids, feeding, and anorexias.

This review summarizes recent work that focuses on the role of endogenous opioids (EOs) and opiate receptors in the control of food intake. Although the anorexic effect of opiate antagonists are now well accepted, the exact EO, site(s), and mechanism(s) of action remain to be established. However, accumulating evidence suggests that dynorphin, an endogenous ligand for kappa-type opiate receptors, is an important regulator (stimulant) of appetite. The roles of other EOs, such as beta-endorphin, are less clear. EOs appear to be involved in maintaining normal feeding behavior and are likely respo

Effectiveness of Spices and Herbs in Improving Diet Quality Among Underserved Populations.

BACKGROUND: Diet quality in the United States is lacking and in need of improvement. Many populations with financial constraints, limitations to accessing healthy foods, and other social determinants of health face additional barriers to eating a healthy diet. The sensory-enhancing properties of affordable and widely accessible spices and herbs were hypothesized to be a promising vehicle in helping surmount some of the barriers to healthy eating among underserved populations and inspired this research. METHODS: The effectiveness of spices and herbs in improving diet quality among underserved

Applying photovoice and human-centered design to contextualize an adolescent micronutrient supplementation intervention in Mozambique.

BACKGROUND: Globally, iron-deficiency anemia is the most common micronutrient deficiency and a leading cause of disability-adjusted life years lost among adolescent girls 10-19 years of age. Adolescent girls' voices are often excluded from shaping the interventions and policies designed to support them. We used participatory formative research methods-photovoice and adolescent-centered design (ACD)-to explore nutrition-related challenges, opportunities, and preferences among adolescent girls in Monapo District, Mozambique, and used the findings to contextualize a nutrition curriculum and suppl

Studies on functional foods in Japan--state of the art.

This paper pinpoints the "tertiary" function of foods which, different from the conventional "primary" and "secondary" functions that are related to nutrition and preference, respectively, is understood to be directly involved in the modulation of our physiological systems such as the immune, endocrine, nerve, circulatory, and digestive systems. Insights into this newly defined function are particularly important in that the intake of some physiologically functional constituents of foods could be effective in preventing diseases that may be caused by disorders in these physiological systems. Nutritional Intake and Sensory Processing in School-Aged Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Background: Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) commonly experience sensory processing that differs from general-population norms, and the autistic lived experience of eating includes preferences for routine, and sensory processing difficulty related to scents, tastes, temperatures, and textures of food. Meanwhile, research indicates that nutrients involved in one-carbon metabolism (OCM) may be related to sensory processing. Methods: This study enrolled 33 school-aged children with autism to assess whether OCM nutrient intake is associated with sensory processing. Parents

Postoral receptors and alimentary taste: implications for energy intake and appetite.

Eating behavior is shaped by genetic, psychological, and physiological factors, with nutrient sensing playing a central role in modulating intake. The tongue, as the primary gustatory organ, initiates this process by influencing hedonic preferences, food choices, and feeding behavior. Recent sensory research has highlighted the potential role of an emerging class of taste modalities known as alimentary tastes. This concept refers to the gustatory detection of compounds that produce weak or subtle taste perceptions but elicit strong postoral effects. While most studies have focused on umami and

Effect of Food and Dosing Regimen on Safety and Efficacy of Proton Pump Inhibitors Therapy-A Literature Review.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are the first-choice drugs used to prevent and treat acid-related diseases. However, a lack of satisfactory response to the standard PPI dose ("PPI failure") is often reported, especially in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Poor compliance seems to be one of the main causes of PPI failure; hence, it is crucial to gain knowledge on how to properly administer PPIs. In this review, we aimed to evaluate the effect of food, beverages, and dosing regimen on pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of PPIs and to frame recommendations for healthcare profession

Default mode and frontoparietal control networks bridge memory and choice consistency.

Choice consistency denotes the capacity to maintain stable, coherent preferences across diverse contexts-a cornerstone of rational decision-making. However, real-world decisions frequently diverge from normative models, marked by inconsistencies and irrationalities. Memory processes may underlie this variability, influencing the formation and maintenance of choice consistency. Yet, the interplay between memory and choice consistency, particularly their shared neural substrates, remains poorly understood. To address these gaps, we developed a novel behavioral paradigm integrating memory retriev
