- A case of a 37-year-old female patient is presented. The patient was admitted to the Surgical Emergency Unit after accidental fall on a metal rod when she had sustained stab injury of the right orbit with penetration into the right frontal brain lobe. Multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) showed penetrating injury and fracture of the right orbital roof without eyeball damage and endocranial impressed bone fragments into the right frontal brain lobe. Urgent surgical intervention was performed by a maxillofacial surgeon and neurosurgeon, including reposition of bone fragments of the orbital r

Pott's puffy tumor is a rare and often fatal complication of frontal sinusitis characterized by osteomyelitis and subperiosteal collection of the frontal bone. It is typically managed by surgical drainage combined with antibiotic therapy. We describe a previously well eight-year-old boy with forehead swelling following rhinosinusitis. A brain CT scan with contrast was diagnostic for Pott's puffy tumor with findings of acute frontal sinusitis with intracranial extension, subperiosteal collection, subgaleal inflammatory changes, and osteomyelitis. The patient was managed medically with intraveno…

Mucocele of the paranasal sinuses is a rare disease not infrequently associated with massive bone destruction, orbital and intracranial complications. The authors report a patient presenting with the giant post-traumatic frontal mucopyocele associated with the erosion of the posterior and inferior sinus walls that was clinically manifested as hypo- and exophthalmos and has caused the inferolateral eye deviation and orbital decompression. The patient displayed the ophtalmological symptoms 8 years after the frontal sinus fracture. The mucopyocele was treated effectively with the combination of t

Skull-base fractures involve one or more of the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone, orbital plate of the frontal bone, sphenoid bone, occipital bone, and petrous or temporal bone. Although the fractures themselves only require reduction and reconstruction when the skull base is severely comminuted and altered, even small fractures and the traumatic shear forces can create tears in the meninges and thus predispose to cerebrospinal fluid leaks. This article explores the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management of skull-base fractures, which most commonly involves resolution o…

Frontal sinus fractures (FSF) are commonly caused by traffic accidents, assaults, industrial accidents and gunshot wounds. Classical roentgenography has high proportion of false negative findings in cases of FSF and is not particularly useful in examining the severity of damage to the frontal sinus posterior table and the nasofrontal duct region. High resolution computed tomography was inavoidable during the management of such patients but it may produce large quantity of 2D images. Postprocessing of datasets acquired by high resolution computer tomography from patients with severe head trauma

Complications of frontal sinusitis are potentially serious. The best prevention is adequate antibiotic treatment of acute sinusitis or of the acute exacerbation of chronic sinusitis. Intracranial complications include extradural, subdural and brain abscesses, meningitis and cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis. Bony complications include localized or spreading osteomyelitis. Surgical intervention is often required to prevent unacceptable mortality.

As developmental biologists, we tell origin stories to explain differences in vertebrate craniofacial form and complexity. Some of these differences are linked to diseases, notably of patients born with congenital malformations, many of them syndromic. These defective processes impede proper neural crest cell migration, differentiation, and patterning of bones, cartilage, joints, muscle and other connective tissues, including of the head. For example, a rare form of holoprosencephaly called cyclopia is a particular quandary in its diverse presentation. This syndromic congenital disease include

A 10-year-old boy presented with headache, fever, left-sided ptosis, and right-sided forehead soft tissue swelling. There was no recent history of trauma or infection. The patient had a large, fluctuant mass on the right side of his forehead, upgaze restriction, left-sided ptosis, and bilateral optic disk edema. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed a frontal bone extradural fluid collection superficial to the superior sagittal sinus in keeping with an epidural abscess. There were multiple venous thromboses and thickening and enhancement of the dura, compatible with meningitis. There …

We report the clinical case of a 43year old Italian woman and her family with Polycystic Lipomembranous Osteodysplasia with Sclerosing Leukoencephalopathy (PLOSL), also known as Nasu-Hakola disease. PLOSL is a unique disease clinically characterized by a progressive presenile frontal-lobe dementia and multiple cystic bone lesions, typically leading to fractures of the limbs in the third decade of life. This rare recessively inherited disease is caused by mutations in one of two genes encoding different subunits of a receptor signalling complex, TYROBP and TREM2. In the present case fractures a

We describe the direct and indirect ultrasonographic features of a case of lumbar open spina bifida. The spinal defect was the prominent feature at 10 weeks + 5 days' gestation; however, cranial signs including narrowing of the frontal bones and flattening of the occiput were helpful at 12 weeks. This 'acorn' sign is likely to precede the 'lemon' sign, describing scalloping of the frontal bones at a later gestation. The diagnosis of spina bifida was confirmed by electrophoresis of the amniotic fluid, which showed an abnormal migration of acetylcholinesterase. Postmortem ultrasound examination …

The article describes a very severe case of hyperostosis of the frontal bone and discusses its possible differential diagnosis. What makes this case special is the fact that the osseous changes include all 3 layers of the bone. Macroscopically the lesion resembles an osteoma as described by Burkhardt (1970) and v. Eiselsberg (1906). The histological examination lead to the final diagnosis of hyperostosis frontalis interna. One must note that there were certain effects caused by a metastasis of a lobular carcinoma of the breast which influenced the osseous changes from the outer surface. The ro…

Nearly 6% of the inhabitants of two villages in Ecuador are deaf-mute and mentally retarded cretins. These communities are situated in the A … tical displacement of the cranial base with an associated upward tilt of the midface. The flattened frontal bone, reduced frontal sinus pneumatization, and diminutive nasal bones collectively create a backward sloping face. The defect in the craniofacial skeleton of these Ecuadorian cretins is characteristic, and it readily sets them apart from the dysmorphism …

Neuroendocrine tumors of the nasal cavity are rare in both animals and humans. This report describes the macroscopic, histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of a neuroendocrine tumor in a three-year-old female roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) that was shot due to a facial deformity caused by an oval, firm, exophytic lesion effacing the left frontal and parietal regions. Longitudinal sectioning of the skull revealed a nasal cavity tumor that had invaded the cribriform plate, the rostral bones of the skull, the rostral aspect of the cranial cavity and the frontal sinuses and ext

The genetic basis and developmental mechanism of unsealed skull in crested chicken with cerebral hernia remain unclear. Here, a genomic region including six HOXC genes was mapped by bulked segregant analysis (BSA) in a crested chicken resource population. A 195-bp intronic tandem duplication was further confirmed in the HOXC10 gene. HOXC genes, particularly HOXC10, were expressed ectopically in fetal skin and meningeal tissues of crested chicken with cerebral hernia, indicating its impact on the cranial mesenchymal tissues that drive the development of scalp skin, frontal bone, and meninges. T…

This paper presents the methods and the materials towards characterizing frontal sinus anatomy and developing representative anatomical models which reflect the variance of the anatomy with three different sizes: small, medium and large. Anatomical characterization was performed using computer tomography data of up to 50 anonymous patients. Dimensional and volumetric measurements were conducted using the .stl files generated by segmentation and 3-D reconstruction. Three representative data sets were chosen to be realized in the form of models with frontal sinuses of small, medium and large siz

Olfactory groove meningiomas frequently present as large or giant-size tumors associated with marked frontal lobe edema and significant frontal lobe dysfunction. Simpson grade I removal was rare in early reports due to their invasion of the ethmoid sinuses and skull base bone,1 which resulted in high recurrence rates.2,3 Indeed, recurrence occurred in the most celebrated case of olfactory groove meningioma.4,5 To achieve Simpson grade I removal (tumor, dura, bone), protect the frontal lobes from additional injury, and provide the best chance for recovery, we demonstrate a few nuances for olfa

BACKGROUND: There are significant variations in the geographical distribution of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes throughout the world, and some genotypes are associated with different clinical outcomes. Eight genotypes of human HBV (designated A-H) have been reported. The present study was designed to examine the distribution of HBV genotypes among patients at various stages of chronic type B liver disease in Yunnan Province, China, and to explore its significance and the relationship of HBV genotype with gender and age, clinical spectrum of chronic HBV infection, and viral replicative activ
