Brain structural features with functional priori to classify Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy using diagnostic MRI.

Clinical two-dimensional (2D) MRI data has seen limited application in the early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) due to quality limitations, yet its diagnostic and therapeutic potential remains underexplored. This study presents a novel machine learning framework using reconstructed clinical images to accurately distinguish PD from MSA and identify disease-specific neuroimaging biomarkers. The structure constrained super-resolution network (SCSRN) algorithm was employed to reconstruct clinical 2D MRI data for 56 PD and 58 MSA patients. Features were deri

Cerebellum and obsessive-compulsive disorder: A narrative review of neuroimaging evidence from MRI studies.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by recurrent obsessions (intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors), with its neurobiological mechanisms remaining a central focus of research. Since the 1980s, neuroimaging studies have revealed significant structural and functional brain differences between OCD patients and healthy controls. Early research primarily relied on the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuit model to explain OCD pathophysiology. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies over the past two decades have identi

Brain-based correlates of depression and traumatic brain injury: a systematic review of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is prevalent after traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, there is a lack of understanding of the brain-based correlates of depression post-TBI. This systematic review aimed to synthesize findings of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies to identify consistently reported neural correlates of depression post-TBI. METHODS: A search for relevant published studies was conducted through OVID (MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO, and Embase), with an end date of August 3rd, 2023. Fourteen published studies were included in this review. RESULTS: TBI patients

Correlations between alterations in global brain functional connectivity in patients with major depressive disorder and their genetic characteristics.

This study aims to elucidate the neuroimaging changes associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and their relationship with genetic characteristics. We conducted a global-brain functional connectivity (GFC) and genetic-neuroimaging correlation analysis on 42 MDD patients and 42 healthy controls (HCs), exploring the correlation between GFC abnormalities and clinical variables. Results showed that compared to HCs, MDD patients had significantly decreased GFC values in the bilateral posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus and increased GFC values in the left and right cerebellum Crus I/II. Abnormalities of intrinsic brain activity in essential tremor: A meta-analysis of resting-state functional imaging.

Neuroimaging studies using a variety of techniques have demonstrated abnormal patterns of spontaneous brain activity in patients with essential tremor (ET). However, the findings are variable and inconsistent, hindering understanding of underlying neuropathology. We conducted a meta-analysis of whole-brain resting-state functional neuroimaging studies in ET compared to healthy controls (HC), using anisotropic effect-size seed-based d mapping, to identify the most consistent brain activity alterations and their relation to clinical features. After systematic literature search, we included 13 st…

The cerebellum and addiction: insights gained from neuroimaging research.

Although cerebellar alterations have been consistently noted in the addiction literature, the pathophysiology of this link remains unclear. The cerebellum is commonly classified as a motor structure, but human functional neuroimaging along with clinical observations in cerebellar stroke patients and anatomical tract tracing in non-human primates suggests its involvement in cognitive and affective processing. A comprehensive literature search on the role of the cerebellum in addiction was performed. This review article (1) considers the potential role of the cerebellum in addiction; (2) summari…

Effects of visual pathway lesions on the visual aura of migraine.

The aim was to to determine if the visual aura of migraine is altered by disease of the afferent visual pathways and if visual aura changes are associated with pre- or postgeniculate lesions. Functional neuroimaging during migraine demonstrates primary visual/extrastriate cortex as an anatomical substrate of visual aura. Neuro-ophthalmological records (including kinetic and static perimetry) of 25 patients with visual loss and typical aura with or without migraine headache were reviewed. Twenty-five patients (16 women, nine men) (mean age 59.8 years) with typical aura had visual loss from preg…

From ATOM to GradiATOM: Cortical gradients support time and space processing as revealed by a meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

According to the ATOM (A Theory Of Magnitude), formulated by Walsh more than fifteen years ago, there is a general system of magnitude in the brain that comprises regions, such as the parietal cortex, shared by space, time and other magnitudes. The present meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies used the Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) method in order to determine the set of regions commonly activated in space and time processing and to establish the neural activations specific to each magnitude domain. Following PRISMA guidelines, we included in the analysis a total of 112 and 114 experi

Cognitive Effort and Schizophrenia Modulate Large-Scale Functional Brain Connectivity.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by cognitive dysfunction and disorganized thought, in addition to hallucinations and delusions, and is regarded a disorder of brain connectivity. Recent efforts have been made to characterize the underlying brain network organization and interactions. However, to which degree connectivity alterations in SZ vary across different levels of cognitive effort is unknown. Utilizing independent component analysis (ICA) and methods for delineating functional connectivity measures from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, we investigated the effects of

Congenital Mirror Movements in a New Italian Family.

Mirror movements (MMs) occur on the contralateral side of a limb being used intentionally. Because few families with congenital MMs and no other neurological signs have been reported, the underlying mechanisms of MMs are still not entirely clear. We report on the clinical, genetic, neurophysiological and neuroimaging findings of 10 of 26 living members of a novel four-generation family with congenital MMs. DCC and RAD51 were sequenced in affected members of the family. Five of the ten subjects with MMs underwent neurophysiological and neuroimaging evaluations. The neurophysiological evaluation

Neural mechanisms of cough: insights from multimodal magnetic resonance imaging-a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cough is an essential defensive reflex that plays a critical role in airway protection. Dysfunction of this reflex, often manifesting as chronic cough or cough hypersensitivity, involves complex alterations in both peripheral and central nervous systems. While previous studies primarily focused on brainstem-mediated reflexes, recent neuroimaging highlights the pivotal role of higher cortical areas in regulating both voluntary and involuntary cough. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the application of multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in delineati

Molecular and Neuroimaging Correlates of Bipolar Disorder: Linking Inflammation, Mitochondria, and Brain Circuitry.

Bipolar affective disorder (BD) is a severe mental illness characterized by recurrent episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression, accompanied by progressive neurobiological changes that go beyond the classical concepts of neurotransmitter dysregulation. Increasing evidence points to the key role of the interaction between inflammatory processes, mitochondrial dysfunction, and disturbances within neural networks in the pathogenesis, course, and treatment response of BD. Neuroinflammatory processes, including elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and microglial activation,

Functional and Structural Investigation of Myenteric Neurons in the Human Colon.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The enteric nervous system independently controls gastrointestinal function including motility, which is primarily mediated by the myenteric plexus, therefore also playing a crucial role in functional intestinal disorders. Live recordings from human myenteric neurons proved to be challenging due to technical difficulties. Using the neuroimaging technique, we are able to record human colonic myenteric neuronal activity and investigate their functional properties in a large cohort of patients. METHODS: Activity from myenteric neurons in wholemount preparations of different

BrainMap VBM: An environment for structural meta-analysis.

The BrainMap database is a community resource that curates peer-reviewed, coordinate-based human neuroimaging literature. By pairing the results of neuroimaging studies with their relevant meta-data, BrainMap facilitates coordinate-based meta-analysis (CBMA) of the neuroimaging literature en masse or at the level of experimental paradigm, clinical disease, or anatomic location. Initially dedicated to the functional, task-activation literature, BrainMap is now expanding to include voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies in a separate sector, titled: BrainMap VBM. VBM is a whole-brain, voxel-wise
