Allergy to octyl gallate causing stomatitis.

Octyl gallate is an antioxidant (European Community number 311). It is used as a preservation agent in a wide variety of foods and other non-dietary substances. We report a case of a 49-year-old female with a 10-year history of 'burning mouth' and clinical erythema of the tongue, who, after investigation, proved to be allergic to octyl gallate. Management with an exclusion diet proved effective in both controlling the burning sensation and resolving the erythema of the tongue.

The minimum inhibitory concentrations of various bismuth salts against Campylobacter pylori.

The minimum inhibitory concentrations of five bismuth salts (bismuth subcitrate, bismuth subgallate, bismuth subnitrate, bismuth subsalicylate and tripotassium dicitrato bismuthate, a water soluble compound of bismuth subcitrate) were assayed against 48 strains of Campylobacter pylori employing the agar dilution method. Tripotassium dicitrato bismuthate was most effective (MIC50 8 mg/l), the other bismuth salts exhibited somewhat lower inhibitory activities. It is concluded that bismuth salts are suitable agents for inhibiting growth of Campylobacter pylori.

Role of cellular Ca++ in phosphorylation of 21 K and 19 K polypeptides in cultured thyroid cells: effects of phorbol ester, trifluoperazine, and 8-diethylamino-octyl-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoate hydrochloride.

Cultured dog thyroid cells contain 21 and 19 kilodalton (K) phosphoproteins which by several criteria have been identified as light chains of myosin (MLC). TSH causes a reduction in the phosphorylation state of the 21 K-19 K proteins, at least in part through activating adenylate cyclase and increasing cAMP levels. We now report that 12-O-tetradecanoyl-phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) also decreases the 21 K-19 K protein phosphorylation state, but in contrast to that due to TSH, the TPA-induced decrease is not associated with elevated cAMP levels. The effect of TPA was not additive to that of TSH. Bec

Eucalyptus torquata L. flowers: a comprehensive study reporting their metabolites profiling and anti-gouty arthritis potential.

Gouty arthritis is one of the most common metabolic disorders affecting people. Plant based drugs can lower the risk of this health disorder. The anti-gouty potential of Eucalyptus torquata flowers methanol extract (ETME) was evaluated in vitro via measuring the inhibitory effects of five pro-inflammatory enzymes; xanthine oxidase (XO), hyaluronidase, lipoxygenase (5-LOX), cyclooxygenases COX-1, and COX-2, in addition to evaluating the inhibition of histamine release, albumin denaturation, membrane stabilization, tyrosinase, and protease inhibitory activities. Also, its antioxidant potential w

Exploring the Neuroprotective Effects of Walnut (Juglans regia L.) Against Cognitive Impairment in Alzheimer's Disease Through the MAPK-mTORC1-TFEB-Mediated Endolysosomal Pathway: A Network Pharmacology and Molecular Docking Approach.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder with multifaceted pathogenesis. Given the clinical need for multi-target in … st affinities for upstream RAS/RAF/MEK kinases, suppressing pro-pathogenic signaling. Concurrently, gallic acid targeted ABCA1 and TFEB, promoting TFEB activation and nuclear translocation to enhance beta-amyloid clearance and lysosomal biogenesis. This study provides evidence that walnut attenuates AD pathology through "multi-component" reinforcement of the …

Antioxidant Activity and phytochemical composition of the leaves of Solanum guaraniticum A. St.-Hil.

Solanum guaraniticum is a shrub belonging to the Solanaceae family popularly known in Brazil as jurubeba or false-jurubeba. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of crude extract and chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions from its leaves, verifying the ability to remove reactive species and identify and quantify phenolic compounds. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest amount of total polyphenols (546.57 ± 2.35 mg gallic acid equivalent/g) and the lowest IC(50) (9.11 ± 0.75 µg/mL) by the DPPH method. Furthermore, the chloroform fraction presented the…

Antioxidants into Nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica), Important Inhibitors of Free Radicals' Formation.

Nopal (Opuntia ficus indica) belonging to the Cactacea family has many nutritional benefits attributed to a wide variety of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Coumaric acid (COA), ferulic acid (FLA), protocatechuic acid (PRA), and gallic acid (GAA) are the phenolic acids (PhAs) present in nopal. In this study, the role of these PhAs in copper-induced oxidative stress was investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). The PhAs form 5 thermodynamically favorable complexes with Cu(II), their conditional Gibbs free energies of reaction (ΔG', at pH = 7.4, in kcal/mol) are from -23 kcal/mol …

Antioxidant Potential and Bioactive Profiles of Non-Edible Parts of Araucaria angustifolia: Comparative Extraction Methods and Oxidative Stability Evaluation.

This study explores the antioxidant potential of Araucaria angustifolia, a native Brazilian conifer, focusing on its non-edible parts: trunk bark, seed coat, and spikes. Aqueous, methanolic, and acetonic extracts were prepared and analyzed for antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays, along with their phenolic compound composition. Methanolic extracts exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity and the highest total phenolic content. Key bioactive compounds identified included gallic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffe…

Untargeted metabolomics reveals Syzygium cumini (L.) alleviates ER stress and redox damage via activation of ATF-6/CHOP/NF-κB signaling axis in diabetic rats.

UNLABELLED: This study reports the therapeutic potential of aqueous seed extract Syzygium cumini (AESC) in alleviating type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) associated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and oxidative stress in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced rat model. The LC-MS/MS analysis of AESC revealed gallic acid, ellagic acid, quercetin, malic acid, and citric acid as major antidiabetic phytoconstituents. Administration of AESC (250 mg/kg) normalized fasting blood glucose levels to those of healthy control rats. Moreover, AESC increases antioxidant levels and downregulates ER and inflammatory markers.…
