The plant hormone auxin plays fundamental roles in vascular plants. Although exogenous auxin also stimulates developmental transitions and growth in non-vascular plants, the effects of manipulating endogenous auxin levels have thus far not been reported. Here, we have altered the levels and sites of auxin production and accumulation in the moss Physcomitrella patens by changing the expression level of homologues of the Arabidopsis SHI/STY family proteins, which are positive regulators of auxin biosynthesis genes. Constitutive expression of PpSHI1 resulted in elevated auxin levels, increased an

BACKGROUND: Brachypodium distachyon is a promising model plants for grasses. Infections of Brachypodium by various pathogens that severely impair crop production have been reported, and the species accordingly provides an alternative platform for investigating molecular mechanisms of pathogen virulence and plant disease resistance. To date, we have a broad picture of plant immunity only in Arabidopsis and rice; therefore, Brachypodium may constitute a counterpart that displays the commonality and uniqueness of defence systems among plant species. Phytohormones play key roles in plant biotic st

Ginsenosides are the major bioactive triterpene saponins in ginseng (Panax ginseng) and are important determinants of its medicinal value. In vitro propagation of ginseng adventitious roots enables large-scale production of ginseng biomass under controlled culture conditions, and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is widely used to enhance ginsenoside accumulation in this system. However, how jasmonate signaling activates ginsenoside biosynthesis and reshapes ginsenoside composition remains unclear. Here, we found that MeJA treatment markedly increased total saponin content and shifted ginsenoside compos

We found two subunits FTase/GGTaseI-α and FTase-β formed a heterodimer to transfer a farnesyl group from FPP to protein N-dansyl-GCVLS, confirming they are responsible for protein farnesylation in planta. Tripterygium wilfordii is a medicinal plant with a broad spectrum of anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive and anti-cancer activities. Recently, a number of studies have focused on investigating the biosynthetic pathways of its bioactive compounds, whereas little attention has been paid to the enzymes which play important roles in regulating diverse developmental processes of T. wilfordii. The synergistic uptake of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is essential for plant growth, development, and adaptation to environmental stressors. The SPX family proteins are key regulators of the P-starvation response, while their roles in the coordinated regulation of N and P remain unclear. To systematically elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which foxtail millet (Setaria italica) SPX family genes mediate the synergistic uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus, and to characterize their regulatory effects on plant growth and development, we cloned SiSPX5, and systematically characterized its bio

Pseudomonas-based biofertilizers show strong potential in sustainable agriculture; however, their effects on rice growth and nutrient acquisition under organic fertilization remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the effects of Pseudomonas atacamensis SJA1 (CGMCC No. 26128) on rice growth and nutrient accumulation using a pot experiment with four treatments: organic fertilizer (CK), SJA1 inoculation (S), mixed commercial biofertilizer (MC, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas atacamensis), and a combination of organic fertilizer, SJA1 inoculation, and commercial biofertilizer (

The cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) is a major pest detrimental to cotton production, and the development of control strategies has been a key research focus. NBS-LRR-type disease resistance genes, the predominant class of R genes, have been found to confer dual resistance against aphids. This study identified 88 resistance to aphid protein (RAP) genes in Gossypium hirsutum (G. hirsutum), other cotton species, and Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana), with a focus on G. hirsutum resistance to aphid protein (GhRAP1). Its expression was upregulated following aphid infestation. Functional analysis de

While epidermal bladder cells (EBCs) have been well documented in quinoa, their presence in spinach has not been previously reported. Spinach is traditionally classified as a glycophyte but our previous and current results strongly suggest otherwise. In this study, we compared two quinoa with two spinach cultivars grown under low (2 dS m⁻¹) and high (25 dS m⁻¹) irrigation-water salinities. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), we demonstrated that spinach has EBCs that accumulate mostly Cl, followed by K, and to a lesser extent Na, whil

Ficus carica L., an ancient crop of considerable economic value, exhibits distinctive biological traits, including flowerless fruit (syconium) development, psoralen biosynthesis, and drought tolerance. In this study, we present a chromosome-level genome assembly (323.03 Mb, N50 = 23.82 Mb) of F. carica, revealing an evolutionary divergence from the closely related genus Broussonetia approximately 50 million years ago. Comparative genomic analyses revealed a contraction in the s-domain receptor-like kinase gene family, which is associated with unisexual fruit formation, and identified conserved

Iron is an essential micronutrient. However, nearly 40 % of arable land worldwide suffers from iron deficiency. In this study, the adaptation of shoots to root Fe2+ deficiency was investigated using hydroponically grown Astragalus mongholicus, a widely cultivated medicinal plant. The root Fe2+ deficiency significantly inhibited the plants' growth and the contents of Fe, Mo, as well as 10 metabolites, including -isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside, and nepitrin, which have reported anti-inflammatory activities. The root Fe2+ deficiency promoted the contents of Ca, Mg, K, Zn, Mn, and 12 metabolites, amon

Silicon (Si) fertilizer reduces cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice; whether the rice Si uptake genes mediate this process remains unclear. This study investigated how overexpressing OsLsi1 and OsLsi2 affects Cd accumulation in rice. Compared to wild-type ZH11, OsLsi1 and OsLsi2 expression increased by 5- and 150-fold in roots, respectively. The overexpression of OsLsi1 reduced root Cd, while that of OsLsi2 decreased shoot Cd in the seedlings. Both lines showed lower Cd in xylem sap, dependent on Si, and alleviated Cd-induced root stress. At maturity, grain Cd decreased by 44-66% and straw Cd by

The hormone salicylic acid (SA) plays a crucial role in plant immunity by activating responses that arrest pathogen ingress. SA accumulation also penalizes growth, a phenomenon visible in mutants that hyperaccumulate SA, resulting in strong growth inhibition. An important question, therefore, is why healthy plants produce basal levels of this hormone when defense responses are not activated. Here, we show that basal SA levels in unchallenged plants are needed for the expression of a number of immunity-related genes and receptors, such as RECEPTOR-LIKE PROTEIN 23 (RLP23). This was shown by depl

Understanding the complex interactions between plants and herbivores is essential for improving crop resistance. Aiming to expand the role of cyanogenesis in plant defence, we investigated the response of the cyanogenic Phaseolus lunatus (lima bean) and the non-cyanogenic Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) to Tetranychus urticae (spider mite) infestation. Despite mite infesting both legumes, leaf damage infringed by this feeder was reduced in lima bean. Comparative transcriptome analyses revealed that both species exhibited substantial metabolic and transcriptional changes upon infestation, alth

High yield and stress resistance are the major prerequisites for successful crop cultivation, and can be achieved by modifying plant architecture. Evolutionarily conserved growth-regulating factors (GRFs) control the growth of different tissues and organs of plants. Here, we provide a systematic overview of the expression patterns of GRF genes and the structural features of GRF proteins in different plant species. Moreover, we illustrate the conserved and divergent roles of GRFs, microRNA396 (miR396), and GRF-interacting factors (GIFs) in leaf, root, and flower development. We also describe th

Plants are sessile organisms that have developed hydrophobic cuticles that cover their aerial epidermal cells to protect them from terrestrial stresses. The cuticle layer is mainly composed of cutin, a polyester of hydroxy and epoxy fatty acids, and cuticular wax, a mixture of very-long-chain fatty acids (>20 carbon atoms) and their derivatives, aldehydes, alkanes, ketones, alcohols, and wax esters. During the last 30 years, forward and reverse genetic, transcriptomic, and biochemical approaches have enabled the identification of key enzymes, transporters, and regulators involved in the biosyn

When plants are infected by pathogens two distinct responses can occur, the early being a local response in the infected area, and later a systemic response in non-infected tissues. Closure of stomata has recently been found to be a local response to bacterial pathogens. Stomata closure is linked to both salicylic acid (SA), an essential hormone in local responses and systemic acquired resistance (SAR), and absisic acid (ABA) a key regulator of drought and other abiotic stresses. SAR reduces the effects of later infections. In this review we discuss recent research elucidating the role of guar

Cadmium (Cd) is a primary contaminant deteriorating agricultural soil quality in China. Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is a vegetable crop capable of accumulating high levels of Cd. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a biochar-based microbial agent (Burkholderia pyrrocinia P10) on pepper growth and development under Cd stress conditions. The results showed that P10 had strong Cd resistance-related and plant growth-promoting properties. Morever, it effectively colonized the porous biochar structure. Under Cd stress (10-70 mg kg⁻¹), the biochar-immoblized P10 (PC) treatment cons

NAC proteins are a large family of plant transcription factors that play a key role in growth, development and responses to abiotic stress (drought, salinity). Various genomic studies across several species have identified NAC genes with specific responses to cold, drought and salinity. This study conducts a comprehensive genomic and transcriptomic analysis of FaNAC genes in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) to elucidate their role in response to drought and salinity. Using RNA-seq and validation by RT-qPCR, thirty-five FaNAC genes were identified that showed differential expression under both

Phosphate (Pi) deficiency induces responses that enhance Pi uptake and utilization. Light may influence these responses through photosynthetic carbon supply and signaling. We examined how light affects the early root transcriptional response to Pi deficiency in hydroponically grown soybean. Plants were exposed to phosphate-sufficient (+P) or phosphate-deficient (-P) conditions for 30 h under a light/dark cycle or continuous darkness. Root transcriptomes were analyzed using Oxford Nanopore cDNA sequencing. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that transcriptomes separated mainly by light,
