Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is exacerbated by Cutibacterium acnes. Although antimicrobials such as macrolides, clindamycin, and tetracyclines are used to treat acne caused by C. acnes, the increasing prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant C. acnes strains has become a global concern. In this study, we investigated the mechanism by which interspecies transfer of multidrug-resistant genes can lead to antimicrobial resistance. Specifically, the transfer of pTZC1 between C. acnes and C. granulosum isolated from specimens of patients with acne was investigated. Among th

The extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria have been isolated at increasing frequency worldwide. Expression of ESBL is often associated with multidrug resistance and dissemination by resistance plasmids. During a two-month period in 2000, 133 clinical isolates of enterobacterial strains were randomly collected from outpatients and inpatients at a university hospital in Turkey. The ESBL producing strains were determined by double-disk synergy (DDS) testing. Twenty ESBL producing strains (15%) including Escherichia coli (n = 9), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 7), Klebsiella oxytoca

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella pneumoniae is a notorious clinical pathogen and frequently carries various plasmids, which are the main carriers of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes. In comparison to self-transmissible conjugative plasmids, mobilizable plasmids have received much less attention due to their defects in conjugative elements. However, the contribution of mobilizable plasmids to the horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence genes of K. pneumoniae remains unclear. In this study, the transfer, stability, and cargo genes of the mobilizable plasmids of K. p

A total of 47 extended-spectrum-cephalosporin-resistant Escherichia coli strains isolated from stray dogs in 2006 and 2007 in the Republic of Korea were investigated using molecular methods. Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC β-lactamase phenotypes were identified in 12 and 23 E. coli isolates, respectively. All 12 ESBL-producing isolates carried bla(CTX-M) genes. The most common CTX-M types were CTX-M-14 (n = 5) and CTX-M-24 (n = 3). Isolates producing CTX-M-3, CTX-M-55, CTX-M-27, and CTX-M-65 were also identified. Twenty-one of 23 AmpC β-lactamase-producing isolates were found to

As two pollutants with similar transport pathways, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics (ATs) inevitably co-exist in water environments, and their interaction has become a topic of intense research interest for scholars over the past few years. This paper comprehensively and systematically reviews the current interaction between MPs and ATs, in particular, the role played by biofilm developed MPs (microplastic biofilm). A summary of the formation process of microplastic biofilm and its unique microbial community structure is presented in the paper. The formation of microplastic biofilm can enha

Colistin is indicated for the treatment of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacterial infections. However, the spread of colistin-resistant bacteria harbouring an mcr gene has become a serious concern. This study investigated local foods in Vietnam for contamination with colistin-resistant bacteria. A total of 261 extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)- and AmpC-producing Escherichia coli isolates from 330 meat and seafood products were analysed for colistin susceptibility and the presence of mcr genes. Approximately, 24% (62/261) of ESBL- or AmpC-producing E. coli isolates showed colistin resi

Antibiotic misuse has led to the rapid expansion of the antibiotic resistance gene (ARGs) pool, making antimicrobial resistance (AMR) a major global health threat. The efficient identification of ARGs and the development of strategies to control AMR have become research hotspots. However, the Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has many limitations in ARGs identification, hindering our understanding of their genetic context. This review uses Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) as an example to summarize the advantages and application prospects of the third-generation sequencing technologies in the m

To mitigate the environmental risks posed by the accumulation of antibiotic mycelial dregs (AMDs), this study first attempted over 200 tons of mass production fermentation (MP) using tylosin and spectinomycin mycelial dregs alongside pilot-scale fermentation (PS) for comparison, utilizing the integrated-omics and qPCR approaches. Co-fermentation results showed that both antibiotics were effectively removed in all treatments, with an average removal rate of 92%. Antibiotic resistance gene (ARG)-related metabolic pathways showed that rapid degradation of antibiotics was associated with enzymes t

Bacterial transposons were long thought of as selfish mobile genetic elements that propagate at the expense of 'host' bacterium fitness. However, limited transposition can benefit the host organism by promoting DNA rearrangements and facilitating horizontal gene transfer. Here we discuss and provide context for our recently published work which reported the surprising finding that an otherwise dormant transposon, IS200, encodes a regulatory RNA in Salmonella Typhimurium. This previous work identified a trans-acting sRNA that is encoded in the 5'UTR of IS200 transposase mRNA (tnpA). This sRNA r

The oral microbiome acts as a significant, yet often overlooked, reservoir for antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). This review examines the role of the human resistome in oral health, evaluating current knowledge on the composition, function and dissemination of ARGs within the oral cavity. By comparing conventional culture-based methodologies against recent whole-genome sequencing (WGS) studies, we assess the critical role of the oral‒gut axis in resistance dissemination. The current literature indicates that horizontal gene transfer (HGT) facilitates the spread of mobile genetic elements

The aim of the present study was to contribute to the knowledge on extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL's), AmpC beta-lactamases and integrons in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from horses, which is still limited. The susceptibility of 1581 clinical isolates from animals to ceftiofur was tested. Most of these isolates (n=1347) originated from horses. Seven ceftiofur-resistant equine isolates (four Escherichia coli and three Klebsiella pneumoniae) were identified and all seven were multidrug-resistant. These isolates were further studied for the presence of ESBL's, AmpC beta-lactamases and clas

Bacterial pathogens utilize a myriad of mechanisms to invade mammalian hosts, damage tissue sites, and evade the immune system. One essential strategy of Gram-negative bacteria is the secretion of virulence factors through both inner and outer membranes to reach a potential target. Most secretion systems are harbored in mobile elements including transposons, plasmids, pathogenicity islands, and phages, and Escherichia coli is one of the more versatile bacteria adopting this genetic information by horizontal gene transfer. Additionally, E. coli is a bacterial species with members of the commens

UNLABELLED: Infections caused by the emerging pathogen Mycobacterium abscessus (Mab) require prolonged multidrug treatment regimens that frequently fail because its accessory genome has incorporated a daunting array of poorly defined resistance mechanisms. However, the processes governing acquisition and retention of new genetic material within the Mab accessory genome remain poorly understood. Here, we first identified two Mab clinical strains that harbor the same uncharacterized toxin-antitoxin (TA) system at different genomic positions. Using computational analyses of the surrounding DNA co

We performed whole-genome multi-locus sequence typing for 2554 genes in a large and heterogenous panel of 180 Listeria monocytogenes strains having diverse geographical and temporal origins. The subtyping data was used for characterizing genetic variation and evaluating patterns of linkage disequilibrium in the pan-genome of L. monocytogenes. Our analysis revealed the presence of strong linkage disequilibrium in L. monocytogenes, with ~99% of genes showing significant non-random associations with a large majority of other genes in the genome. Twenty-seven loci having lower levels of associatio

Enterococcus faecium is a gut commensal of humans and animals but is also listed on the WHO global priority list of multidrug-resistant pathogens. Many of its antibiotic resistance traits reside on plasmids and have the potential to be disseminated by horizontal gene transfer. Here, we present the first comprehensive population-wide analysis of the pan-plasmidome of a clinically important bacterium, by whole-genome sequence analysis of 1,644 isolates from hospital, commensal, and animal sources of E. faecium Long-read sequencing on a selection of isolates resulted in the completion of 305 plas

Antimicrobial resistance genes in aquaculture environments have attracted wide interest, since these genes pose a severe threat to human health. This study aimed to explore the possible mechanisms of the ciprofloxacin resistance of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (V. parahaemolytiucs) in aquaculture environments, which may have been affected by the biofertilizer utilization in China. Plasmid-mediate quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes, representative (fluoro)quinolones (FNQs), and ciprofloxacin-resistance isolates in biofertilizer samples were analyzed. The significantly higher abundance of oqxB was ala

Countering the rise of antibiotic-resistant pathogens requires improved understanding of how resistance emerges and spreads in individual species, which are often embedded in complex microbial communities such as the human gut microbiome. Interactions with other microorganisms in such communities might suppress growth and resistance evolution of individual species (e.g., via resource competition) but could also potentially accelerate resistance evolution via horizontal transfer of resistance genes. It remains unclear how these different effects balance out, partly because it is difficult to ob

Antibiotic resistance is rapidly spreading via the horizontal transfer of resistance genes in mobile genetic elements. While plasmids are key drivers of this process, few integrative phages encode antibiotic resistance genes. Here, we find that phage-plasmids, elements that are both phages and plasmids, often carry antibiotic resistance genes. We found 60 phage-plasmids with 184 antibiotic resistance genes, providing resistance for broad-spectrum-cephalosporins, carbapenems, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, and colistin. These genes are in a few hot spots, seem to have been cotranslocated wi

The present work addresses the effect of excess levels of ZnCl2 and CuSO4 in the growth medium on the conjugative transfer of plasmids carrying the antibiotic resistance gene blaCMY-2 from extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli. Norwegian poultry are not treated prophylactically with antibiotics, but still, ESBL-producing E. coli are found in the chicken populations. Chickens receive higher amounts of Zn and Cu than their biological need, and several metals have been shown to act as drivers of antimicrobial resistance. In the present study, ESBL-producing E. coli st
